After the war, black vets along with their white comrades & friends rejuvenated the civil rights movement. They did recieve support from the Feds & many state & local governmants, but not from many other people.
There were many black combat & noncombat units, & in the US Navy there wasn't segregation of units. On D-Day, a black Antiaircraft unit came ashore in the 3rd wave I do believe, & there were others on the beaches.
US Army had 2 black Infantry divisions, 1 saw combat in Italy & the other in the Pacific.
On Peleliu, black marines that were in shore party & support units volunteered to fight alongside their white comrades in the infantry, & also served as stretcher bearers & all were highly welcomed & greatly appreciated & acclaimed. Same thing occurred in the Battle of the Bulge.
Selfridge & Oscoda are both in Michigan. I met a guy that knew Detroit Mayor Coleman Young who was a bomber navigator. This black guy despised Coleman & said "Coleman! he couldn't navigate his way out of a paper bag." Coleman was a trip. I was born in raised in Detroit. Voted for Coleman 3 out of 5 times & then gave up. Coleman's old comrade in arms was right. Wives of the Tuskegee Airman have a chapter in Detroit, they are great people.
to the deathtoliberal guy, yes there were other pilots that did exceptional feats in there aircraft, but they didnt have to deal with racism when they if lucky enough to return home.proud veteren, aviation buff, and african american I just had to respond to your message. God bless America!
But seriously though, God bless these men and also the 761st tank batallion and any other black unit in the military. I can't imagine having to go through the racism and segregation they went through and still fight like proud Americans. I don't think I could do it.
I was watching Hiram Mann on History channel or CSpan yesterday. He told the story extremely well. I am going to try to find it again and record it for UTube. Leebm29 at yah dot c
These men were the BEST pilots of WWII. This footage, as well as history, proves that color is NOT the determining factor of skill, bravery or honor! God bless them all!
Some familiar faces, my old friend B. O. Davis, Jr. in the opening shots. P-40s in some nice coordinated turns, accurate bombing trials, good landings. Brings back memories of flying an old Guillows model wood and silkspan glow plug P-40 when I was a kid. Check out our Tuskegee Airmen tribute race car, Claude B. Govan Chapter, "Electra GSX"

My respect is valid for all pilots of all nations,
everybody for himself believed right for your country to act and, besides, so courageously and proudly fulfilled your duty.

Unfortunatly the US is not the only country with a racist past. Guess how many Aborigines have ever flown for the RAAF?
I hate racists, if they had have had thier way this valuable resource of skilled pilots would have dug ditches throughout the war.

Thanks for placing this online. It is a valuable documentary, despite the "casual racism" (as you so rightly called it) in some of the marration.
