i know this by barbara dickson she had quite a big hit with this in the uk i've allways loved her version now this by the queen of vocals something unexpected and rather good fo an unfinished track wow i love it
Karen already believed in her talent, I think this was just a way to get out from under a bit of the squeaky clean image , and do something a bit more adult/mature. Everyone in their lives goes through something similar, and I think Karen simply wanted that as well. She would always be remembered for the velvet smooth voice , power when she needed it and a bit of disco around the edges for a fun evening. I love all of her stuff, and my you RIP Karen; your gift was appreciated.
You know after reading thousands of comments on you tube, I'm really amazed at how little people really know about the Carpenters, but when you read alot of crap people write they try to convince you, that this is the way it was. The truth is unless you knew Karen, Richard, the band, or anyone in the posse you don't know. Richard knew that people would try to paint him as the bad guy. But let everyone in on a secret don't believe everything you hear, or read. He does so much good for the world!
@vmuto1 I agree with you to a certain extent. However, I find it extremely odd that Richard went to such great lengths to silence people close to Karen (paying her husband off for example) so that his own revisionist history becomes 'the official Karen Carpenter story'. I also find it strange that in his self produced Carpenter docs he claims that Karen's solo project was filled with cheesy disco numbers when in fact the Made in America record is basically filler and cheesy disco
@ritter89 I'm so honroed that you agree with me to a certain extent, I'm going to subscribe to your channel which is a good one at that. You share the same opinion of a few, however Richard is not the Bastard that people portray him to be. Everyone did Disco- The Carpenters we're originals they did their own music. Soft stuff when Woodstock was in, etc... Several of us will never share personal stories, or experiences because they were special & private (nothing bad at all) Thanks, nice comment
@ritter89 I've got serious problems with Richard myself. He's done a lot of censoring over the years ("The Karen Carpenter Story" went through 4 or more revisions before it was deemed "right.") He just didn't want Karen doing her own projects because he was afraid of losing her; she was very much in demand as a singer and, as I'm finding out, a performer as well.
@vmuto1 What good does he do? When? Where? Do Anorexia patients rely on him as source of comfort? I know, I know, you'll "never tell." How do you expect people to learn the "truth" when you say nothing?
THE BEST FEMALE SINGER EVER! NOBODY WILL EVER TAKE HER PLACE! I always thought Karen looked the best with shoulder length layered hair, that is such a timeless hairstyle. She had beauty, class, and talent, and is greatly missed by all. RIP KAREN. :)
@maleficentdiva yeah me too. She's lovely. I am 37 but recall the Carpenters from my childhood and always have had a place in my heart for her. Her voice is just the best. Love her always. :o)
@SilentGStrings Omigod! I recognize that backdrop. That's her on "The Dating Game". And the video is at watch?v=XbCaYd6iZyI. And her brother is also on the show at watch?v=d1hZ_ckt108 and watch?v=xzus24UUwcY
I know a lot of people think that only Richard could make Karen's voice. Be that as it may, she had to break away from him SOMEDAY. She was almost 30 years old. time to leave the comfort zone and spread her wings. Which, of course, is EXACTLY what she was trying to do with this album.
THANK YOU!!!! I every now and then search Karen Carpenter on YouTube to see what may be out there. I am soooooo glad to have done that and found your posting. I absolutely love Karen Carpenters vocals more than any other performer, EVER! This song is as beautiful as she was inside and out. Again, thank you!
"...long ago - and so far away - I fell in love with you..." - you're now leading the angel choir beyond the stars... It was inevitable: you became a SUPERSTAR.
at first i dont like the song that much but as I keep on listening to it, im just surprised to find myself humming the song, its really addictive! it keeps repeating in my head i love the song so much. thanks for this one
Anytime I can hear Karen it is a treat. Any song she recorded is to be cherished. She was one-in-a-Zillion. She was merely taking her voice and career in a new & different direction for that time in her life. I continue to honor her legacy and keep my promise to her. Best to everyone.
I love her vocals here. I think her solo songs were quite good. In the carpenters she sang wonderfully, but in her solo songs you can hear different ranges, higher notes very well sung. She was and in a way still is unique. Thanks for posting
I think Karen was done a great wrong by her solo album not being released in her lifetime. I think it could have given her the mental boost she needed to believe in herself and her talent.
Hang on a minute, I know this song, loved it for years. It was a hit for Barbara Dickson in the UK in 1980. But this version is fantastic & different - amazing to hear a Karen Carpenter version!
I don't hear that this song key is out of Karen's vocal range. However, to her credit, she is/was the only singer who could crecendo into a lower key change!
Karen had a voice that could probably be categorized as a high mezzo-soprano. She was a classically-trained singer and she developed her so-called "basement" chest register for the soft, torchy pop sound that was all the rage at the time. Her vocal registers were so seamlessly integrated that you almost don’t notice a particular difference in tone or effort between notes that are as much as two octaves apart. This isn’t at all typical of a contralto (as she was so often called).
Nice observation. While Karen's voice is always stunning, you will note a primary issue that Richard took with her solo album is the incorrect range (as well as the use of over-dubbing that he employed via Les Paul on Carpenters/ The Carpenters albums). This is an unreleased track from the Phil Ramone produced recordings (released in 1996). Please promote Carpenters induction into the Hall of Fame.
Wow she's just awesome, how great to hear something new, what is this from? her solo period? Is there an album with new songs? Ahhhh I just love Karen!!!!
This is such a great song by Karen, but then every thing she sang was great. Richard should maybe look at rearranging the song and then release it on a CD entitled Karen Carpenter; Lost But Found.
The more I listen to this song, the more it grows on me. indigo, I love your selection and treatment of the video/photos. The uniform look of the video brings a nice consistency to the montage.

I think, the solo album was a fault. Richard's music was better for her voice.

@KCH2010 Hi this song is written by Alan Tarney for Barabara Dickson.
Alan was the favourite songwriter of Cliff Richard.
Great songwriter.... better performed then Karen... sorry... by Barbara,

Is she singing too high for her range during the chorus? Other than that, it's a nice tune for Karen.
