  • rossini was a 20th century composer working in the 19th century and i believe is still un appreciated by the so-called experts because they place him in a time he doesn't fit. He was an entertainer first and a composer second and the first modern entertainer.

  • Rossini was more than a genius. All his operas are like fine jewels. He was an amazing composer, far ahead of his time.

  • I just love Rossini, I just come from a rehaersal where we played 'la gaza ladra', but this remains my favorite.

  • this oboe part is killing my tongue

  • Beautiful piece of music. Thanks for posting!!

  • Also don't forget Demetrio e Polibio written 1806, performed 1812 and Ciro in Babilonia(not sure on spelling) the latter an opera oratorio.

As far as overtures, personally I like the two acter Pietra del paragone best(would later be used pretty much unchanged for Tancredi). L'Occasione has a very unusual one with a storm if I am not mistaken.

I have a feeling Rossini may have borrowed the crescendo effect from someone else- not sure who- anyone knows?

  • Of course, I just didn't mention them as they are opera seria, but thank you for noting them (the spelling in correct, by the way :))! And, yes, "L'occasione" doesn't have an overture as such, rather a very arresting storm which works extremely well :). The crescendo certainly wasn't invented by Rossini himself, but he is generally considered one of this effect's best users :).
