I also think this song is less about abuse, and more about how people you love aren't always what you expect them to be. How she loved one man, except needed some freedom... so he let her go, and promised he'd be there when she came back. He turned out to be lying. The girl loved someone who promised to wait for her and hold her forever (someone who didn't exist) but this man was completely different from what she'd hoped for him to be.

Firstly, thanks to those who wrote supportive replies. I was set to marry a girl I met online, working on the paperwork when I found out she cheated on me for a year of the two year relationship lol. I really like this song... it's so pretty. But for some reason, I take a different meaning from it than any specific abuse/neglect in relationships. I think it's about someone who painted the idea of a true love in her mind because she's lonely - she's actually never been in a relationship, she's never met her "true love" because there's no such thing as him. The last verse about "heart growing old" or cold or whatever it is is about her being tired of her lack of love in her life... imho :P

@gaeliann you are right in what you take interpretation of the song, but it has more to it than that.

It speaks about a woman who never had love and just imagined she had to keep going on, in the end she just wants to die. Blue caravan actually is the death (think of it as the impersonated cloacked figure with the scythe). I'd actually dwell into an short analysis of the song letter but, there is limited space to write. ^^;

I've got to agree mostly with Sid, here, though. It's not men or women. Both can be very much equally tied in the race for cruelty. However... as a matter of opinion, I've always heard this song and thought, just a tad, about myself. Not in the self-centered sort of way, but so much so in the way that sometimes just even imagining having someone to come home to, someone to hold you, to keep you in their heart and to love you unconditionally would be what keeps you safe...but that's never enough.
