jenova is a alien that crash landed on planet earth and pretending to be friendly with the 'ancients' she tricked them and infected them, the ancients then sealed her away at great expense
does kinda require you to know what happened before... there's cutscenes in ff7 (not at the end) that explain vincent's past (he's only an optional character, not very important storyline-wise in the first ff7 game)

Vincent and Lucrecia were starting to get down (STARTING TO - they were only in the courtship phase), but in DoC we find out that Lucrecia used to work with Vincent's dad (a Shinra scientist) and that an experiment they were on got him killed. Lucrecia felt guilty about it and so she kept that hidden from Vincent (he didn't know that she knew his dad). When he found out, she was so upset that she drifted away from him.

Oh man, how could they screw this game up? Great plot, radical cut scenes and a gameplay thats tried and true for the Devil May Cry series and they go and screw it up. How can you stuff the gameplay!? Lazy bastards...
Not exactly ''the'' Shinra, but some Underground Organisation from Slump Ruins in Midgar, from what I gathered atleast. I have to say, these FMV's have the quality of Advent Children & even in-game cutscene's look pretty awesome. By far the best looking FF-title to me!!
