It's a bad interpretation because obviously it is not literally talking about Christmas Trees because they didn't exist yet. So then you have to ask do Christmas Trees somehow fit what that passage is really going after? And the answer is very clearly no. Decorating a tree and putting presents under it isn't idol worship. And yeah if I was a fundamentalist I might agree with the argument. Not that I believe in any of this anyway, but just as a kind of literary interpretation, from my view, even if X-mas trees derive from something that might be prohibited, they aren't in and of themselves idol worship.

Coveting is simply an exceptionally common characteristic of all people. I do get your point that capitalism's focus on private control and ownership ultimately leads to increased mass consumption, I just don't know that it is required per se.

-Not all mixed fabrics, just wool and linen
-No there's nothing in the Bible about Christmas trees, that's just a really bad interepretation from Jeremiah by silly fundies
-If the person you were responding to is a Christian, kosher laws explicitly do not apply, but they are still relevant for some conservative Jewish groups
-And no the 10th Commandment would not prohibit Capitalism per se.

@blackplatypus, it's a bad interpretation because it is speaking specifically of idol worship. A christmas tree isn't an idol. It's a bad interpretation because obviously it is not literally talking about Christmas Trees because they didn't exist yet. So then you have to ask do Christmas Trees somehow fit what that passage is really going after? And the answer is very clearly no. Decorating a tree and putting presents under it isn't idol worship. It's a bad interpretation.

Are you saying that the reason it's a bad translation is because the Christians adopted this practice for their idol and not the pagan's? Because that's really not specified in deuteronomy... it just says not to adopt their practices.

@blackplatypus, I do get your point when it comes to Christmas trees. I get that it does derive from earlier pagan rituals that would clearly be covered by Judeo-Christian notions of idol worship. And yeah if I was a fundamentalist I might agree with the argument. Not that I believe in any of this anyway, but just as a kind of literary interpretation, from my view, even if X-mas trees derive from something that might be prohibited, they aren't in and of themselves idol worship.

As for capitalism, fair enough, it merely precludes consumerism but I'm not aware of any capitalist economy that runs solely on labour seeing as a market and consumer goods are inseperable.

I took it as wool and linen being an example. But one could even take is as "don't wear clothing of diverse sorts as you do of wool and linen" which would exclude all except a wool/linen mixture.

@blackplatypus, I think my problem with the coveting within capitalism is that it would be difficult to not ascribe that attribute to any system. Coveting is simply an exceptionally common characteristic of all people. I do get your point that capitalism's focus on private control and ownership ultimately leads to increased mass consumption, I just don't know that it is required per se.

@blackplatypus, With the clothing, I was just going off of the Jewish prohibition against "Shatnez." I myself am not Jewish, so I admit my knowledge is limited there, but I think they take it as only wool and linen being a problem.
Anyway, thanks for the extended religious discussion. Even though I am not religious at all (just grew up that way), I rather enjoyed that.

Yes... I'm well aware that most Christians just arbitrarily decide which old testament laws count and which don't. But, if I'm not mistaken, Jesus specifically says during the sermon on the mount that not a jot nor tittle of the law shall be changed. Could provide chapter & verse for where kosher laws are abrogated?

It was actually quite biased (I thought) but one Lexington mother did phone in and she said that they did get the same "diversity bookbag" as David Parker family which contained

Mr. Parker went to the school to stage a protest, which is his right. He went to make a scene and he refused to leave peacefully, even after the officers gave him the opportunity.

I am a proud Iowan citizen and I support gay marriage as perfectly natural. There is no deviation from heterosexual or "traditional" marriage, and children will not be confused in the schools. We simply teach them that some men marry men, some marry women, some women marry women and some marry men, it's that simple. This ad is one of the biggest examples of fear-mongering I have ever seen in my entire life. It shows that hatred has mercilessly forced itself into faith in a vile hostile takeover.

So I suppose it would be alright with you that enough votes were assembled to overturn Women's right to vote, this being a democracy, it would have to pass. Of course not: it violates someone's civil rights. As an American, I am entitled to all the rights everyone else has, not just the ones a certain "majority" decide I can have.
And as far as boycotting businesses, that's my right, if I don't care for the values of the owner of that business who has voted to legislate discrimination..

Yes, but we learned a few things from history and made laws that fascism was will never exist and that nations must come to aid in an event of Genocide (Both heavily supported by the US, who's Republicans are pushing towards a far right on the Political Spectrum, and who ignored the Rwanda genocide).
But one important thing we learned is speech. Hitler could have easily been prevented if people spoke up, but instead people feared and obeyed their governments without questioning.

The thing you must know that it's the citizen's duty to obey the laws in their country, but also question their government. After all, the government IS working FOR the citizen in controlling the country, and you'd want them doing the job you'd want them to do.
Of course, this group in this video aren't really much of a political party, but remember that the Nazi's started off small somewhere, and all they needed was people to convince so that they could get higher to where they ended up.
