This is not a porn movie, the sex appeared because it's an important part of the story and it's real sex exaclty to "build" this intepretation of the audience, but it's not a "X" movie, it's an erotic drama.
I again gave the wrong impression, 1. I'm a woman who appreciates Asian films. 2. This film was based on an actual story and the lady in question was considered a feminist idol. Japan pink films rely on exaggerated humor or what was once called in America, 'roughies' in the 60's. When naked people playing volleyball did not sell then, films about 'bad girls' and downfall did make money. That is the reason anyone makes explotation films, cold cash & nothing but; art be damned. Sad, but true.
That's more or less what I was trying -and failing- to say. Is that what we in America call 'Hardcore' pornography that means full frontal nudity & penetration is strictly forbidden by law in Japan, even with the use of optical blurring of the genitals. There is also what is known as pinku eiga or 'pink films' which are more like hard 'R' rated sex films, that often, but not always, deal with rape and violence towards women. Try finding 'Eros In Hell' by Jack Hunter, great book on these films.
@iolaus Nudity alone is not regarded as pornography and thus forbidden in Japan. However the japanese censors consider pubic hairs as pornographic. That's the reason why you find mainly shaved girls or even minors without pubic hairs in sexual action in japanese hentai comics and nudity magazines. Btw this was for centuries also true in Europe.
@iolaus rape & violence toward women is everywhere.. if this is how men wish to get off it is pretty sicko in the head- must have some real complex psychological issues deep down & not man enough to face & deal w/them. Any man who can have real affection & care for a woman has the best sex because it not only fulfills kama but also prema. Men who like rough & aggressive sex should have it with each other & men who have sex w/children are not only very insecure about themselves but abnormal!
@anglinthemtns First of all, there are women who get off on inflicting violence too. I haven't seen this movie yet but from the reviews I understand that such a woman is depicted in this movie, which was based on a true story. And you can care for someone and do it to them rough and aggressive because that is how they like it. There is a difference between BDSM and abuse.
The film also was a French/Japanese co-production since the sex scenes were not faked, the producers had to ship the film to Paris to be edited together because if they had done so in Japan the anti-porn laws would have meant that everyone involved, the producers, Director Oshima and his actors would have all done serious jail time. Still to this day, 'hardcore' porn is more or less illegal in Japan, to the best of my knowledge.
To me, it's more of a porn with plots than a really "movie". The ending is very very disturbing. Damn, I was not expecting that at all. Now, I can see why it was banned in the NY film fest. I got to give them props for making this film during the 70's where this kind of stuff was unheard of.
Boy,Ceremony and this movie showed a new Japan that was tired of the old way. This film ,a true story hints that the political is often grounded in the physical, sexual boundaries set up.Ishimura and Hani &esp .Mikio Naruse's films dealing with the feminine have showed the New generation that had to take its place.
The people who bash this movie are those who are insecure and/or stupid. This is a classic, from what I've heard! Do you think there's any way to upload it anyways, no through Youtube but elsewhere? No copies of this movie is available at my school nor region...
Sadly true, considering some of the language on youtube you'd wonder on what grounds perhaps. In many ways we've not got very far despite impressions, a lot of people seem to be more conservative these days if anything.
Porn movies are usually not about the story and focus more an the actions themselves (and are made for masturbatory and arousing reasons; not the case here). Sadly not appreciated on YT here.

I'd like to upload this fantasitc movie, but I think it would be deleted by Youtube because of the so-called 'obscense and indecent'.

I'd say, not in Western Europe. This is mainly the case in the US and Canada more than anywhere else in the Western world.

Ah, you're from the UK. UK stands between the US and Europe anyway. ;-)
