It's amazing. He keeps going down, down, down. And well before he's through dropping down there, you're certain his voice is going to pull it's punch and he'll give away the fact that he's frying it all. But it never happens---because J.D. Sumner is the only bass I think I've ever heard who could legitimately hit those notes in chest voice. At times in this compilation, he sounds like he's up against even his limits---and his voice takes on the timbre mine takes when I'm hitting my lowest.
The difference being that when he sounds like he's up against his true vocal limits, he's about an octave and a half lower than my C2, B1, or Bb1 (my voice has odd quirks and varies by the day, but I can usually hit low C).
If I didn't hear that distinct timbre, that vocal quality that suggests he's actually singing but has come almost to his limits, I would never believe a human could sing that low. Our vocal cords just aren't long enough.
@thebassmanadam I think he means that tenor part, lol! Also, I thought that was a C1 at the beginning? Either way, is it in full voice? I can't tell past Eb1 if a note is in full voice because I can't hear the tone much.
At 2:15,I can't tell what the song is but the high tenor voice sounds like Steve Warren during the time when he sang with the Stamps Quartet.I met Steve Warren in Pigeon Forge one year on vacation.he was in Duff's Smorgasbord playing piano and singing.I bought 3 Cds and he autographed all 3.I stood over by his piano and talked to him about Elvis and then he and I sang the song I John together. It was awesome.I also met all the gospel greats in the 60's at allnight singings when I was a kid.
@yamahonkawazuki Yes, I realized it was overused. But that was my first and last time using that joke. Just thought I should use once before it was completely dead.
@LacrimaLunaMortua The lowest note ever registered would have to be from Tim Storms. Around 2-3 years ago, he recorded a note of about .7 Hz, which is roughly a F#-5. It's not recognized by Guinness b/c they're stupid. Instead, some old guy from out of nowhere snags the title from Tim. If Tim wanted that title, he could snatch that shit any day. Basically, imad.
@beard295 WHAT-THE-HELL???!!!! I had no idea there're negative notes *-* F#-5??? What does it mean? C7/C6/C5/C4/C3/C2/C1/C0/C-1/C-2/C-3/C-4/C-5?? What's the equivalence of a C0 in Hz?
@LacrimaLunaMortua Tim Storms (current world record holder for the lowest note) has reached into those notes. However, I don't think it's even possible to reach that low without the use of vocal fry. Also, pretty much anything below Eb1 (last E flat on the piano), which is heard here at 0:30 and 1:29, isn't really musical sounding anymore, at least to my ears.
@LacrimaLunaMortua The easiest way to explain this is to refer to A440. That's the A above middle C on the piano. It's 440 Hz. Go one octave down, it goes down by half to 220. As you go down, the frequencies get lower (smaller numbers) and thus the distances between the frequencies become smaller as well. But go one octave up from A440 to A880, and then up a couple more, and the frequencies get higher (larger numbers) and so the distances there get larger as well.
@GamingDrummer89 Yes, I knew that about A4 (440 Hz) but I had no idea how to calculate the differences in Hz between notes. Anyway, I can't believe someone reached F#-5 because that's almost 0Hz .-.
The nearest I can figure, the last note he slides down to at the end of the video is somewhere around a G0 (one note below the botton note on a paino) to an A0 (Bottom note on a piano). Either way, impressive does not do this man any justice.
JD will always be the true lowest bass singer in the world... Guys like Tim Storms, this New Roger guy and PDK are great bass singers, but JD walked it, talked it and lived it. In case anyone ever wonders, JD talked in the same register that he sang in. Which is what takes the doubt out of guy's like him, Tim Riley, Jeff Chapman, Mike Holcolmb, David Hester ect. Great video Adam.
I would like to know if I could get this version of "I'm Telling The World of His Love" anywhere. If so, could you tell me where? Thanks and God Bless?
i don't think there is. I have had it for quite a while. I have a huge southern gospel/gospel library of JD Sumner, Gold City, Cathedrals, Acappella and various other groups.
It's true. JD holds the record for the lowest note ever. He had a blast showing off too! I have trouble listening to him for very long because my brain starts to shake or something. Ha! Whew the tail end of this video almost rattles my head off!! ;-D
@mymymymy6 Jd sumner is in the Genis book of world records for lowest bass singer. I think he will be the lowest ever too. I can only imagine that around his time the stage was set for amazing sounds and beautiful voices. He was Elvis presleys bass and noone can deny Elvis was one of the best voices of the 20th century. ( i'm being modest) I think he had the most beautiful and best voice ever. Only Bing Crosby comes close.
@mymymymy6 Quite certain it's not enhanced. Ask anyone who attended a live performance or talked with JD. Face to face without the microphone doesn't leave room for electronic trickery. No human voice can match this.
His lowest notes are extremely refined vocal fry. It's a shame that most people can't use vocal fry effectively, but JD appears to have it down to a science.
The best of the best of the very best, how could anyone in the right musical mind compare JD with ANY other bass ever. He was incomparable, ask the best out there now, Joe Brown, Harold Gilley,Jeff Pearles,Kennemer,Storms et al will all testify to the fact that JD had it ALL,... in spades.
I couldn't of put it any better! Well said and very accurate. A lot of those basses would also tell you that JD inspired them and was an influence on their respective careers. To me, JD stood alone and in memory he still stands alone as the truest lowest of the low bass singers out there.
That is what I have always said to people that says he frys those low notes. If he did they wouldn't sound like real notes and they most certainly do. JD was awesome wasn't he?

@LacrimaLunaMortua Yep, that's how its counted.

@GamingDrummer89 So, how can a F#-5 be 7Hz and C0 16 Hz?? How can there be such an extremely narrow difference? .-.
