@womad actually i was concerned about this last night when i first watched the movie. I looked up the tale online to get clarification on the origin of it. Turns out that, like expected, Disney changes the truth behind the origin to a way that makes it appealing to the general public. However, if you want more information on the original basis, you can look it up around the internet. There are many different stories and versions, but Disney makes it appealing to the general public.

Rapunzel, as made clearly by her very German sounding name, is a German fairytale, though it is suggested that it was adapted by the Grimm Brothers from a French tale called Persinette. The Irish sounding music doesn't bother me so much because the film has a very generally European feel to its mise-en-scene. There is still a German influence on the design of most of the buildings in the kingdom.
