@Hallaran Hmm looks simular to a Model T coil set up , Iv'e heard of guys riging these up for anti theft protection on their cars, you touch it and it would bite the hell out of you ! 1940s style theft protection LOL
@Hallaran Hmm I gusse you have to use spark plug reach to adjust the timeing, like a glow plug engine, you don't want any kick backs when hand cranking, Iv'e had some of those oil feild engines kick back , kind of hard on the wrist, Iv'e hered of model As & Ts breaking arms if the spark was to far advanced. Some pumpers use a rubber wheeled portable electric starters that use battery power from their pickups,Ajax even has a automotive style starter bolted on them now days
@kamphwagon1 One of the engines I used this for was a Novo that had the switch/points mounted right on the side of the engine. It worked very nicely, you would turn the flywheel to TDC and the points made contact at that point and Boom! Off she went... I like this box as it gave you the choice of using either the spark ignition or the make-or-break ignition for older engines that used ignitors.... Thanks
@Hallaran Yeah I can see how great that buzz ignition would work with the way you explained how to set spark timeing , hey youv'e got your own MSD set up, with the low RPM of these engines it ought to fire one off better than a magneto or a Altronic set up, The Altronic set up uses a generator in place of the mag, a automotive coil with a magnetic pickup on the flywheel, a way better deal than the old magneto with points to wear out & adjust !
@kamphwagon1 I am all for any system that is somewhat better then those old points systems. I got close to tearing my hair out setting the points in cases where the distributor shaft had a bad bearing and the points would go immediately back out again! Thank God that was earlier on in my gearhead career and I was able to find out what the problem was!
@Hallaran Realy , Iv'e had some of those hair pulling incidents myself ,esp on B&S engines before the magnatron ignition ,haveing to pull the flywheel everytime to set the points , not to mention if it was a vertical shaft engine moisture could travel down the flywheel keyway and short everthing out LOL esp when the youngster who was cutting the grass failed to put the lawnmower in the shed and it got rained on !.....LOL
@kamphwagon1 Reminds me of the guy that tried to shut off his engine by peeing on the spark plug - Bad idea and a very shocking experience! Lol! Yeah, sometimes it only takes one rainstorm and the engine has to be taken apart and cleaned up before it will ever fire again!
@Hallaran Or guys running a fence charger wire to their car to stop a dog from hikeing his leg on a set of nice mag or crome wheels ! Warning don't try it with one of those electronic chargers that run off of house current ,LOL the voltage is so high on those that they'l jump trough the carbon in tire rubber and the weed chopper is liable burn up a tire or set the car on fire ! Ran out of insulators and tied to use intertube rubber, the weed chopper had it smokeing in short order !.......LOL
@Hallaran Yep thats a possibility anytime you get the voltage high enough, some mechenics are saying some of these automotive systems can be a threat to your health ,I know plug gaps have increased over the years . At one time GMs HEI was the hotest on the market ,now days it's hard to say ,ignition wire size has went from the stadard 7mm to 9mm diameter and alot of the newer stuff has the coil in combination with the plug boot fireing the plug every time the piston comes to TDC
@kamphwagon1 I hear you, I had a Z28 once that fried an entire set of wires. It shorted through the wires and caused the engine to backfire through the exhaust system at which time it caused the combs in the catalytic converter to shatter.
@Hallaran LOL now thats a real backfire !.... Iv'e had blown gasgets ,those doughnuts on the header pipes from backfires but never blown the inside out of a catalitic converter. My uncle had a 83 chevy 3/4 ton pickup that at times when shuting the engine off the hot cast iron manifolds would produce a back fire from unburned fuel , I think the idle was possibly a little fast alowing the engine mometum to pump fue air mixture into the exhaust ,with a 30 or 40 second delay at times on the boom !
@Hallaran i dont meen to harp .....but heres a quote from some one smarter then me ...and i am talking about a T model buzz coil...quote..There is one area where you must be very careful when using 12 volts DC, if you let the coil continually buzz for several minutes without running the engine it will over heat very quickly and the tar will start to boil out the top of the coil. Just don't let the coil buzz continuously with out running the engine and you should be fine.
@stimulater7 Yes the issues with controlling this stuff is complex as I am learning from my own trial and error. I do not run them for very long, that was probably the longest I have ever run one continuously. Thank you I appreciate your helpful advice and comments!
@stimulater7 Its totally fine like hallaran said because theres a sparkplug connected to it. Without sparkplug it would be bad idea to use the coil.
i remember when I was doing a compression test for my bike engine. There was a warning in my bike manual that said during compression test the sparkplugs should not be disconnected from the sparkplug wire, otherwise the ignition system can get damaged. I believe its actually ignition coil that would take damage if used without sparkplugs.
can you use one of these on a hit and miss engine?

Hi Hallaran:
Do I know you? I got an invite to be-friend you. Cool ignition coil test by the way.

TRcustomengineering 1 year ago
@TRcustomengineering Yes you can! Get a Ford buzz coil off Ebay. Be careful the voltage is high.
Hallaran 1 year ago
You could even make a mock one with an automotive relay and an automotive coil, and put it in a box.

@JerryMopar That is a good idea for a reproduction. I am working on one of those with a moped coil.
