Lord Krishna is absolute, you can hate him, lust after him, envy him, have love for him...any mode or emotion that is directed towards him he takes as worship plain and simple(as long as its sincere). Lord Krishna stresses this, he also mentions that he will take anything from us. Offer him our madness, our hate, our fears, our darkest emotions, he will take it. Curse him, he will take that as well. That is the qualities of Godhead.

some people dont have the intelligence to read a text and finish it and understand it, some people need simple methods, such as japam and Bhakti yoga. Some need an image of god to focus on, sometimes its a picture and sometimes its a statue. Muslims say Hindus should not worship idols, i can understand why .... Prophet had to make people resist from going the Pagan ways which was essentially idols.
