  • @franciscolagarda1 no thumbs

  • 666 VIDEOS? NOOOOOOO!!! XD

  • didnt know Marty was here to :3

  • Thank you I finally found someone articulately explaining how to to alternate picking. Most tutorials say how important alternate picking is but doesn't show any patterns…this is what I have been missing.

  • MARTY!

  • I watched the first minute and I know how to play blues.

Honestly, it's more of feeling and less of notes.

  • How did I know Marty would be teaching this?

  • Little turnaround on this exercise: try it without the rolling finger. Instead apply one rule, never use the same finger for two consecutive notes, instead use the next finger available. For example, start the exercise like marty but when you have to skip to the 5th note use your second finger instead of the roll-over, and continue with your fourth on the second string and so on. That way you will train your fingers to get quicker and stronger, and some extensions too. Rock on ;)

  • man i got number 11 earni ball and there pretty hard to go fast on my squire strat is it me?

  • @bozo5116 Well a tip would be to get lighter strings. Lighter strings = less sound. But they also = playabillity

  • marty ,,,,,,,,lets be honest its YOUR PICKING !!!

  • i thought marty was with guitarjamzdotcom

  • i love your guitar.

  • dude your da only teacher i use on the internet.your da man.learnt so much.cheers mr marty.

  • @cholatucola

    you are gay

  • @ziommaks123 Thank you

  • @cholatucola

    yeah = ) np

  • 1:39-1:41 wtf! i thought i was stoned!

  • I tend to like position 2 of pennatonic in any key. position 5 as well in Rock songs in A. but thats just me. What do you think GJamz?

  • @ERPPP oh thanks :D

  • Is that a Heritage? :D

  • sorry

    but where's the Eb note?

it's still just a normal pentatonic A minor scale, right?

  • @BlackWidow8492 an A minor penatonic or even the regular A minor couldnt have a Eb note in it, cause its the equivalent to the C major which is all natural notes.

  • @SlashJr01 - oh, I thought he mentioned the blues scale that contains Eb in A minor or either C major

  • @BlackWidow8492 probably just a misunderstanding. but yeah thats a negative, no sharps/flats in a minor.

  • So excited to learn my first blues scale. You are awesome. :]

  • VOTE UP FOR Marty Schwartz!! (Y)

  • I don't care about speed, i don't wanna play like bucket head. Pls show us how to improvise with licks. i wanna play like jimmi, jimmy, clapton, santana, and all the melodic soloist.

  • I don't care about speed, i don't wanna play like bucket head. Pls show us how to improvise with licks. i wanna play like jimmi, jimmy, clapton, santana, and all the tasteful soloist.

  • Marty I liked this lesson ! It's very easy and cool .tnx guy

  • this guy's a good teacher! thanks

  • nice simple exercise, esp. for beginners for both understanding and building dexterity and speed. Nice lesson for entry to mid level players.

  • Thanks

  • Thanks for this ,I need some material for blues licks and your lessons are a great source.

  • this guy is my fav youtube guitar teacher

  • Haha....Aren't you the guy who taught me Stairway?

  • KURWA DUDE YOU ARE FUCKING AWESOME!!!! BEST TEACHER EVER!!

  • YOU HONESTLY TALK TOO MUCH! We wanna see your fingers moving, and that guitar sounding!

  • fucking great dude!!

  • he's playing gutiar for almost 20years

  • great stuff, i just wish i can play like dis to my girl :p

  • you look like david blaine

  • A pentatonic scale with six notes, wow.

  • @Waranoa

it says blues scale, you prick

  • @MrStuntCentral First of, thanks for the needles insult, I always appreciate that. Second, I know a blues scale can have any number of notes you want, but a pentatonic scale can only have five. Pentatonic means 'containing five notes'; this one has six, do you see the discrepancy?

  • @Waranoa A blues scale only has 6 notes 1,b3,4,b5,5,b7. Minor/Major pentatonic has 5 notes. Everyone knows 'penta' means 5... but you don't seem to know that the blues scale has 6 notes.. now you do.

  • hey, I fall in love to blues! I now play some simple blue scale! thanks to you!

  • Hey, Marty. I really want to learn to play slide guitar properly and I was wondering if you could do a lesson. If possible, I'd like to know how to play beggars and hangers on by slash's snakepit.

  • what kind of guitar is that?

  • Nice stuff guy's - Liverpool UK

  • realy good :D

  • amazing

  • bad

  • very good

  • Best teacher on YouTube I learned all my knowleg from him 1 year and 5months of guitarplaying with marty :) I can jam pretty cool blueses and I´m proud of it :D

    Greatings from germany

  • how can u play with a guitar and and amp twice the size of u there fuckin huge

  • marty that video really helped me pick up one how the blues guys run their stuff together thanks

  • nice teaching!!!Ive learned a lot!

  • look up the CAGED method for finding your scales anywhere on the neck. Its really great... its based on the C A G E and D chords, each having a relative minor of the first one.... such as E minor is the relative minor to G, and the G minor is the relative minor to A. For this you need to learn each pentatonic scale form for each chord.... so the CAGEand D scales. once you learn them all, you know the relative minors too.... believe me it will all make sense just google it. or you tube it idk...

  • @fendersprint Yeah.

    C

    A (relative minor of C)

    G (relative minor of A)

    E (relative minor of G)

D (uhh..relative minor of F?) lol. kinda ruins the pattern.

  • How do you make it so you can solo everywhere on the neck no matter the key of the song?

  • @Boss44221 watch eric johnson

  • @Boss44221 im not an expert, but basically you want to internalize the five positions of the pentatonic scales. then learn to "string" them together. the shapes are all related too, so its easier than you think. hope that helps man

  • @Boss44221 you have to be able to move the scale all around the neck

  • @2smokesnifer i think sum one needs to teach us how to move the scales around on the neck and make it sound good while doing it.

  • @Boss44221 you practice. and practice. and practice. and practice. etc.

  • @Boss44221 you have to still use an A scale for a song in the key of A just learn the different positions for the scale

  • @Boss44221 practice scales like a motherF over different chord progressions, after a while they will come natural to you........its like dancing and not looking at your feet, you can do it because your brain has grown accustomed to the steps

  • @Boss44221 learn your scales on each string. for example. the key of A minor. 5-8 on the low E, and instead of

going 5-7 on your A string, play 10-12 on your low E, then play 15-17 on your low E, pay attention to how the string skipping is happening. like 2 fret, 2 fret, 3 fret repeat. all the way up a string. really pay attention to where the roots are. there are 3 frets going up the neck from the roots. like 5-8 on the low E. and every string is just like that after the root. Hope that helps"

  • @Boss44221 The modes. First learn the shapes of the modes: Ionian, Dorian, phrygian, Lydian, mixolydian, aolian, and locrian. Then put the Ionian mode on the root and put the scales in order up the neck. they all interconnect. To form one big scale. You can put the root on the key or the current chord of the song.

  • @Boss44221 well if you learn these scales and how to use them, then u can solo any where on the neck because the scales are all relative to each other, they will just sound in different keys.

  • @Boss44221 Learn the notes that go along with the root note. If the song is in the key of A major, you could solo in A major, B minor, C minor, D major, E major, F flat half diminished, and Uh, G Major or Minor. Not sure about the last. If you play a major Chord, all you have to know is that it is 1 major, 2 minor, 3 minor, etc. This is only for Majors, start with major soloing, and then when you get more advance, (which shouldn't take so long), move on the other licks. Hope this helps.

  • @TheMrFlamingskull could u try to put that in different words i understand the concept i think but im getting thrown off

  • @Boss44221 you have to know its relative minors / majors etc. and u have to know ur scales. you have to know your guitar sorta say.

  • @Boss44221 I think you should learn the 5 position pentatonic scales. Example: if you play a song in A, you can use all the five diffrent pentatonic scales to soloing. ;)

just search for 5 pos pentatonic in youtube ;)

  • more from you marty very cool

  • WOW!!!! he is a great guitar teacher he made it really easy to learn he didnt go to fast and he didnt go to slow. also he didnt drag it on and on.he also didnt just show it to us and then it was over he explained it.

  • Man I can't tell you enough what a great guitar instructor you are. I've learned more that I ever have. You're clear right to the point, know when to stop and repeat, etc. etc. Keep the vids coming. Peace

  • I love marty :)

Again a great lesson, you make me wanna play guitar more and more :)

  • I love these guitars!

  • 2 09- 2 12 sounds like the begining of the stairway solo

  • i hate my pinky. it gets sore

  • how do you practise improvising? i just play over backingtracks but it always sounds the same and i cant go as fast as i want

  • There's studying.... listening to music is great while playing....

One great thing to train that's not your fingers are your ears. Train them hard. Some people will have trouble, but it isn't that easy for ANYONE.

Sing the notes you play in a key. Or vice versa. Sing BEFORE you play the note, etc. etc.

There's so many perspectives on "practicing".

Learn some theory... know your fretboard inside and out... use your musical mind... your imagination... look for inspiration. Make music.

  • DUDE where do you buy your hats from? I gotta get me one k!

  • get em at my baby joe's store

  • your who's what?

  • "my baby joe's" thats the store

  • ummm wait dont tell me umm practice?

  • great lesson. so simple but you can get so much out of that one idea. good suff.

  • wat your setting bass ,trebil,pick up,tone

  • Yeah this guy is a really good teacher, everything he says and shows is so bright even for beginners, he mostly starts slow and turns the difficult up during the lenght of the movie great way to teach stuff to beginners and more skilled players.

Thnx marty for sharing you're skills we probably love you all. And if some people don't, then don't bother playing guitar.

    Peace

  • whats the most important thing to know when your learning guitar

  • practice makes perfect

  • Practice!

  • pratice

  • then practice some more.

  • You know... when you just tell someone to "practice", you're probably encouraging a bad habit upon those who wanna know these things to get better.

It's not JUST practicing... it's KNOWING what you are practicing. You need to have a target. You gotta shoot at it. And keep going at that target till you can get a bullseye 100 times in a row.

Some people wanna play rhythm good while singing.

What do you do for that? Practice LOADS. Simple.

But when it comes to serious lead, It ain't just that.

  • practice practice practice, if you're not practicing... you should be practicing.

  • this guy would be a cool teacher

  • hey quick question do u have to start on the root note when u do soloing in the scale

  • of course not, you can start wherever you want! ^^

  • no!

  • after watching your video, i just started taking out my guitar, AND IMPROVED ALOT!! FINALLY I CAN DO SOME SIMPLE BLUES RIFFS THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO! <3 THANKS BRO! -thumbs and toes up-

  • Nice

  • i just got into watching their videos and every of marty's video never fails to disappoint me!

  • anyone wanna tab this out, cause when he gets near low E he speeds it up and confuses the fucking shit outta me, iv been working on this for like a damn hour now and its not making sense

  • try hearing it out. then figure the note on your guitar.

  • People are generally stupid. Ignorant people are also stupid people. Its just part of life.

  • this is awesome

  • Awesome. I want to learn to play like this. Thanks!

  • Great vid!

Is that a The Herritage Guitar ?!

  • You're videos are alwyas astounding

  • your a brilliant teacher, however I wish you had shown us those tasty licks in slow motion once. Many teachers leave that part out which fustrates students.

But now I think you did give me the key in that exercise to learning those licks.

    another great lesson.

  • cool stuff! and old teacher of mine had me doing pretty much the same thing in 3's and it opened up a lot. never thought to get it going if 4's though... duh! sometimes the simplest stuff is right in front of your face and ya never see it... til marty drops it on us at least! haha! keep it up marty, love yer stuff!

  • Yeah I always did it in 3's too.lol A really cool thing I do now is mix it up between the 3's and 4's and you get some cool stuff out of it.

  • what u mean with 3's n 4's?

    u mean complete tones?

    or half tones?

    or wht

  • uhhh... u go up the pentatonic scale starting on a note, and then 4 notes up [or "in 3s" is 3 notes up]

pretty much just what he's telling you in the vid =P

  • nice teacher...greatz !!!

    thanks for the teaching....

  • Enjoyed It!

  • thank you. this is so sweet man. Very good explaining everything in detail. very very helpful

  • WOW!!!

    This guy is good!

  • sweet man that is just sweet playing right there

  • your wife is so lucky

  • LOL

  • nice hat dude

    it sounds good

  • he has a whole video describing his guiitar

  • could be a gretsch

  • Heritage

  • You know you're playing well when you shake your head while making the stink face.

  • And if you can get the bug eyes going too then you're just tearing it up.

  • You're a great teacher Marty.

  • Well said, sounds fun!

  • first thing sounds like part of the spongebob theme

  • couldn't hold myself from laughing at the faces he makes lol... good lesson by the way

  • You have to make the faces and actions though while playing. Otherwise the guitar won't make the sounds you want, it senses your fear and lack of confidence.
