  • "I said i put both my feet down, and still i didn't get the point. I guess the referee, musta been smokin' a joint."...one of the best song lyrics out there. LOL.

  • kinda weird how my name is michael henderson and i play american football........

  • luv ya blue!!! show h-town some luv... we got robbed in the 1979 afc championship game against the steelers. should've had instant replay. bum said we are gonna kick that son of a bitch in next year.. I see someone just got "tebowed" 45-10....michael henderson put some funk on this jam(1980).

  • this song was in reference to the 1979 afc championship game between the oilers/steelers. Mike Renfro had a apparent touchdown. But the refs saw otherwise. The Oilers should have been going to the Super Bowl that year. Bum Phillips made a statement at a Pep Rally in the Astrodome. He said that the next year we where gonna kick that "SOB" in. I watched the game. Earl Campbell was one of my favorite players. Michael Henderson also appeared on Soul Train in 1980 doing "Wide Receiver".

  • This brings back memories. In junior high school, girls wore shirts that said "I'm a Wide Receiver." From ironed-on stencils. I thought it was nasty then and I guess it was? Lol.

  • Graduated from High School!!!!!

  • This is my Jam ... xoxo ..HIT ME ...xo

  • Correction: Buy (not by)

  • I recall in the summer of 1980, going to the record store with my older brother and one of my cousins to go by "Wide Receiver", Zapp's "More Bounce To The Ounce" and Cameo's "Cameosis" albums. They had a big poster of Prince for his up coming third album release called "Dirty Mind" with him wearing the trench coat & briefs. We all looked in shocked at the poster and said "WTF happen to Prince?!!!" Lol!! Damn! this song takes me back, 1980 was definitely a good year for great music!

  • @MrJuly1990ish WOW! good music!1

  • this is one jam that was too funky, i dont care what the subliminal messages are, pass the funk

  • This song got to number 4 on the R and B chart in 1980 charted very well.

  • I was the one who gave the ref a joint in the first play...I really dig this going back in the day..but now I'm more of a "tight end" then wide receive..

  • Sandra Dee Lawson.

  • Back in the days in Chiquitos LOl""

Night clubb making thousands and thousands of bigg dallors?

    Rest N peace _____David Flores____

  • his song was a party club song...it was the jam. We could care less if it was about football! I had to look this song up and hear it again as I watched USC and Notre Dame this evening! Oct.22 2011. GO Trojans! Serious note.. this song has a sexual ,drug and homosexual connotations truly a song is for all personality types..because I guess we all have that one thing in common? We all wanna be hit by a wide receiver.. not in the literal sense. Listen and learn.

  • One of the few true "funk" masterpieces of our time...Michael Henderson's bass line on this song is comparable to the legendary Bootsie Collins!

  • @philipbourne If it had poor written lyrics and came out in present day music, yes. However this song is about a football game that pissed all the fans off.

  • @heyroz27 Okay, It's an Urban Legend because that what I heard about the song growing up. And now I know

  • @philipbourne NO. It's a reference to a bad call during the playoffs in the late 70's. My guess is the portrayal of the tight end is his way of calling him a fag. Oilers/Steelers

  • @clubmidnightsun Well that answers that.

  • @philipbourne It's about football !

  • @kewanw16 Yes, yes it is.

  • oh and the line "the last time we knocked on the door the next ime we're gonna kick the sob in" This was their second time in a row I believe, being knocked out by the Steelers in the playoffs.

  • The "Thanks Mean Joe" line was from a '79 commercial, Steelers. The song was released in 80. Now the gay references. Can you think of a better way to call some of the players fags. I don't know any of this artist music but this song was brilliant. Stop bogarting that joint sister!

  • You guys are so funny. Gay song? Apparently the lyrics went over most peoples head. True there are gay references but first things first. This song was released directly after a bad call in the playoffs for the superbowl between The Houston Oilers and The Steelers '79. They were tied in the 3rd quarter but a catch by the Oilers was called out of bounds, the reply showed otherwise. lyrics " I got both my feet down and sill I didn't get the point" "the referee must have been smokin a joint"

  • @clubmidnightsun Everything you said is true accept when it was released (1981).

  • @MrMallymal68 I have my copy of this release. A near pristine 45 rpm with matching jacket that I bought brand new when it was released. Label clearly has a date of 1980.

  • @MrMallymal68 I stand corrected! I have the LP it was 1980.

  • His gruntings are addictive @ 1:29, 1:49, 2:34, 2:42, 2:50 etc.

  • Another underrated artist

  • This Brother could Jam!

  • Thanks Mean Joe!!!

  • @ canned funk who ask why I said Gay undertones. Well let me see. 1. I want a Wide Receiver ! " Hit me from the rear.

    2. Gay Voice " HEYYY YOOOWHOOO Any of you Fellas need a tight end???

    3. (In this context) Some times you feel like a nut some time you don't is a Bi-Sexual playoff

    4. Like in the song "You are my Star Ship " he says " And don't you CUM too soon" Its men that CUM too soon so again he makes gay innuendo.

Oh and White people have gay sex too for you racist people.

  • Is this from 1979 or 1980? Mr slow jam himself with this funky kinda corny joint.

  • @kewanw16 Its a great song i remember it as a little kid i was 7 years old in 1980 thx for the year.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm sorry the song is funky but it definitely has a gay vibe to it.....not that there's anything wrong with that........no homo LOL!!!

  • Yoohoo...yoohoo...do any of you fellas need a tight end...?

Yeah, now you see last time we knocked on the door. Next time w're gonna kick the sonofabich in...word.

    It's football season.

    Love Michael Henderson.

  • i said i put both my feet down and i still didn't get the points.

i said the referee must have been smokin' a joint.

    Houston Oilers vs Pittsburgh Steelers?

  • @jjjjaabb Absolutely - one of the worst calls in history.

  • I remember my parents had this record. I used to listen to it, and it always made me laugh!!! LoL!!! I miss those days...

  • Michael Henderson is a funk genius. I know because I co-wrote "Wide Receiver".

I'm the guitarist on the track and I played in his band for 6 years. People didn't realize how incredible a talent he was. Bass player for Stevie Wonder at 13, Bassist for Miles Davis while still in his teens. Need I say more?

  • @RandyJacobsMusic If you're who you say you are - Yeah I know exactly who you're talking about and who you are. No. No need to say more. And may I add, you REALLY throw down on this one. Thanks. I've loved this song for about 30 years...

  • @RandyJacobsMusic There you go "take em to school, "They don't hear you , take they there Teacher of Music.

  • @RandyJacobsMusic You're on this track?! Man, come sign my album! :-) Where are you located, and are you available? I'm actually putting an old-school funk band together right now, and lemme tell you it's hard to find a true funk guitarist. Plz message me even if it's just to say "no thanks". :-) RE: Michael, lemme tell you, some of us certainly do know what a talent he was/is. His playing undoubtedly influenced my decision to play bass.

  • "last time we knocked on the door. This time, we gone' kick the sonovabitch in" Classic Detroit joint.

  • Funk destroys motown sound by a landslide!

  • @SamuraiClinton Micheal Henderson is from Detroit!

  • @MrMallymal68 YEAH!!! That is just AWESOME!!!

But its the so-called motown sound from the 60s which is nothing like funk; of which I prefer funk so much more.

It just so happens that newer bands and entertainers from Detroit aren't even anywhere near as good. Just a reminder on how run down many parts of Detroit are. I don't want run-down areas to ruin music; but unfortunately they have; and I hate how Justin Beiber validates it; along with the Lady Gaga nonsense.

  • @SamuraiClinton How do you know so much about the Detroit Music scene when you haven't step foot in the D? You would absolutely loose your mind if you had that experience! I can tell you are a youngster with limited musical taste and knowledge by your references to Beiber, Gaga and funk. Yeah the D is lil grimmy, but so are the people here. You couldn't walk through the D with a hall pass! We'll take your lunch money, everyday!

  • Michael Henderson is so well known for his ballads that most people don't know how down and funky he could really get! He's a mean bass player too!

  • @SIGMAMAN69 True. This song had everybody on the dance floor.

  • This is a great example of PURE FUNK. It is a collage of random references laid over driving rhythmic grove and a gangster bass line. And he is tossing all kinds of subliminal references in this soup. Like the Sports overlay with the Gay underplay . So talented.

  • @Detroitblue Gay underplay? He's talking about doggy styling a woman... What's gay about that???

  • I remember loving this back in the day. Thanks to the internet, we can travel back in time and listen to old stuff we have forgotten about. I never understand why people like Michael Henderson weren't as successful as they should have been considering the great music they put out.

  • gawd i miss the late 70s and early 80s

  • THIS IS REAL MUSIKA F#$K THE NEW SHIT OLD SKOOL ASTA LA MADRE......5150MX:.

  • this takes me way back luv u blu h-town baby

  • "sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't. WIDE RECEIVER"!

    Classic, dude!

  • sweet

  • better quality sound on my submission of the song!

  • heyroz27, big ups for this one my man!

  • DAMN!! You can just FEEL Randy Moss takin' it to da' HOUSE to this cut!! FUNKY!!

  • That was the cut

  • This jam came out my first year in junior high.

  • you wishful thinking gay folks never seize to amaze me, Michael is not and has never been gay, keep wishing, and pull your thumb out your stink hole

  • man this one brings me back!!!!!!!

  • I remember when this song was hugh. Michael opened for Ashford and Simpson at the Circle Star Theater in San Mateo - good times.

  • NEW ORLEANS SAINTS!!! WHO DATS... WE GONNA GET ANOTHER RING... WE KICKED THE SOB IN DIDN'T WE???

  • micheal henderson is gay,,,,i will still fu55CKN HIM WIT A COMDON

  • @mrsnodaysoff oh yeah, he sure is.

I caught him sticking a microphone up Larry Craig's highly orgasmic butthole in an airport bathroom the other day. Larry Craig had a scandal for lewd conduct in 2007 because it was an anomaly since the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport bathroom was prone to other gay dudes being there to begin with. But Larry Craig got off easy this time since there was no sting in the John that Michael Henderson took a dump in. Gay sex sure does feel good.

  • @gaybathroomsex , you are a bold face lier, but if your false Gay comments make you cream in your old dusty panties than go for it,

  • @mrsnodaysoff But he ain't, keep wishing, you may want someone much younger with a tighter stink box

  • Larry Craig could sure give a blowjob in an airport bathroom with this song at FULL BLAST after he cuts a glory hole in a bathroom stall!

  • Pimpilicious Bay Bay!!!

  • the first time i hear this song, I though he was about a football game-hit me with wide receiver down..

  • anybody remember the dance "football" with this song

  • Atlanta Falcons baby....

  • The MUSIC from our era, is so much better than 2days noise. I feel funny and old saying it cause I was born in1969 and even claimed to be a rapper for more years than I should have but now I realize I just missed that funky MUSIC I grew up on and with. I live in Vegas too and a GOOD FUNK BAND WOULD REALLY MAKE A KILLING OUT HERE.

  • I'm in a funky mood tonite for sho - I need a wide receiver !!!!

  • NICE!! classic song.

  • sounds like the vinyl version. more stankier than the CD

  • Now you see the last time we knocked on the door, Next time we're gonna kick the son of a bitch in...

  • @FireitupBedford Actually it's "Last year we knocked on the door, this year we beat on the door, next year we gon' kick the som bitch in! ---Bum Phillips head coach of the Houston Oilers

  • @FireitupBedford yeah yeah....'' good evening marvin !! OLD SCHOOL FOREVER !!! OSPC

  • we used to pop lock to this song in DETROIT back in the DAY

  • Ya know......I was just a little boy when this song came out . I loved the song, I was so sure this song was about football and candy.....you know ..sometimes you feel like a nut ? Had no idea that Mike was singing about Man Balls.... LOL To each his or hers own.....I am a grown ass man now and I still like the song Butt...any ladies wanna play FOOT & BALLS wit me.....Hike dat ball girl !!!

  • One thing we definitely know about Mike is that he couldn't possibly have been self-concious. To be able to sing like he does at 3:10 to 3:34 and 6:40 to 6:46, YOU GOTSTA TO GET UGLY!!! You can't sing like that by keepin' a straight or tryin' to be cool. :-) See that's what's wrong with too many young singers now...they're either to self-concious to REALLY get down...or they're UGLY at the wrong time.

  • Uh puke puke so sic!Wouldnt you butt bust a fine ass female shapely sofe hairless beautiful female ass?

  • Uh puke puke so sic!

  • To the person who like to buttfuck you are just plain nasty ,wide reciever is a football song from back in the day,now what if i said booo-ya that's what you call teabagging when i put my ball's in your mouth hahaha

  • @GayNiggerSex How fuckin SICK!

  • @wildwildwest1414 What can I tell ya?

Were just so into this funk music; that gay niggers just like to buttfuck to it.

gay nigger sex is just one of those rituals to frot off to when the song is at FULL BLAST.

I am a shock jock who is just determined to disgust the internet.

  • @GayNiggerSex you're fagot that like to take it up the ass, that's why when you hear this song it makes you think of sex. maybe you would have liked it if your boyfriend had wrote it for you.

  • classic...

  • I was watching the old soul train episodes, and I heard this song and I luv it!!!!!!!!

  • I'm checking out this funky Michael Henderson joint and I look at the comments and I see this?!? With all due respect, GayNiggerSex, but you can keep that "In between shit that really don't mean shit" out of the discussion. Real Talk.

Another ?uestion: WHAT DOES WHAT YOU DO HAVE TO DO WITH THE SONG??

  • @GayNiggerSex You could've kept all of that, dude...Indignity has nothing to do with how you may feel, descriptively, about funk music. And, TRUST ME, gay black men wouldn't use a username such as yours (so WHAT are you?) or speak offensively about an area of themselves that brings upon them FIERCE scrutiny & ridicule. It's very sad that you felt you had to be that way towards a people & a genre. Your loss on both...

  • @STLHouseLegend Don't get me wrong. I still like funk, which is a genre made by negros!

I am just into buttfucking gay black dudes, that putting funk records at FULL BLAST just makes our orgasms more effective since the room vibrates so much and stimulates our nervous systems.

  • @GayNiggerSex You give gay black men a VERY BAD name, Your comments are vulvar and not in good taste. You are quite the nasty one. FUNK IS HERE TO STAY !

  • @Gerri000 Oh yeah! Funk sure is HERE TO STAY!!!!

I do not offend simply because I have no respect for others; but rather I just think that YouTube needs some shock jocks to make racist comments just to put shits and giggles into the comedy entertainment market since some think racism is funny. If you think about how Howard Stern sometimes says "nigger", even though his assistant Robin is black, it'll tell ya something!

Besides, I'm black myself; I just act like a white racist for shock laugh

  • @GayNiggerSex well it must not be that great, bcuz your wasting too much time on here making comments.lol!

  • i like this song

  • he, he, ya'll dont nuttn bout dis......unless ya'll is really down or 46 yrs old, lmbo!

  • I grew up on this Brother and all of this kind of music

Let those whom know Funk as yes!!!!

  • O dam i use to love this song OMG ! Five funks up *****

  • Now this is what real funk supposed 2 be. A nice freestyle form. This was our Psychadelic and Acid-Rock.Something both Lenny Kravitz,Terence Trent D'arby and Living Colour still stay true 2 our funk roots. And Thanks 4 Jimi Hendrix,Miles Davis,John Coltrane,Parliament,Ohio Players,Michael Jackson,Bob Marley,War,Cameo<Ray Parker Jr ', Prince and let's not 4get if it weren't 4 the Godfather of Soul[James Brown],Where would we be?Just Lost People.

  • @TheZenmaster46 ZenMaster, or should I say Funkmaster. your dead ass right! Why this type of funk has been overidden by all that weak pathetic hip hop rap crap that is on the radio today is unbelievable. This funk is the real deal with real musicians and geniune creativity that is so lacking in todays black music.

  • I used to request this song at many dancehalls!

You'll be surprised how many DJs have this song available in their record repositories. However, I think the future should have DJs rely on YouTube availability (or some on-demand music website) rather than carry a library of their own, that is how wired the world is now.

Not even getting this song to be heard more will get people to value funk more than hip hop.

  • The dig at Marvin Gaye in the intro was not cool. It was assumed after the commercial failure of "Here, My Dear" and the brick that was "Ego Trippin' Out", that Marvin had lost his super powers. Then came "Sexual Healing"!

Marvin told author David Ritz that he saw Michael Henderson as threat and one of the guys he had to win his fans back from. He definitely kicked MPG when he was down.

  • Jamming tune! Hit me with a wide receiver! Thanks for posting!

  • Man I been looking for this song but couldn't think who sung it,Michael Henderson! Bring back that funk!

  • I'm 21, and I be playing this damn song in my car. It so damn funky. I think it's perhaps the funkiest song to come out in the 80's. The beginning is so funny.

I like how he said "You not half the man you used to be".

I wonder what Michael Henderson is up to today.

  • Thanks Mean Joe. You Whooo Do any you fellas need a Tight End. Hit me from the rear. Wide Receiver LOL!!!!!!!

  • @shebad10 LoL is right ! These guys were as high as shit when they produced this

crazy ass funky classic. Listen to the shit they were insane but the the music was smokin!

  • Damn, he looks like Joe Jackson in this photo! lol

  • (Calvin Johnson, Detroit LIONS!!) --- I put both my feet down and still didn't get the point...the referee must have been smoke'in a joint

  • He must have been watching the LIONS game...I had both my feet down but still didn't get the point....the referee must've been smokin' a joint (he was with me!)

  • Hit Me With That Wide Receiver....

  • ok ok i'm still waiting damn it. i'm waiting for the funk of the 70's-80's to make a come back. man this is the music we would get our dance on back in the day.it was all about dancing and chasing the females & vice versa.now today all the youngsters think music like this is whack or old. what a bunch of bullshit.i'm 43 & i tried to instill this music into my kids, but it just does'nt work 99.5% of the time. lil wayne, souljah boy, & the other popcorn, thugged out, plastic garbage they call music.

  • @str8outtatexas1 You can say that again!

CDs might be made of plastic, portable computers might be made of plastic, but I don't tolerate music being made of plastic!

  • Michael Henderson is the TROOF!! So versatile!

  • FUNK...

  • I like the party freaks in the background at the beginning of the track. They go away at 0:49.

  • funky

  • If U Listen To The Lyrics: "I Had Both My Feet, Down But Still I Did"nt Get D Point, The Referee Must"ve Been Smokin A Joint." I Know He Was Referring To The 1979 AFC Championship Game Between The Steelers And The Oilers(RIP) Where We Also Got Screwed. Yeah, Im From H-Town Still Bothers Me 30 Yrs Later. Great Song Though!

  • @kirkindog LOL!! I see you're still touch by that. Must have went down in history as the worst call by a referee.

  • @heyroz27 the call was so bad it was used by proponets of instant replay to push there agenda when the nfl was debating on incorporating instant replay

  • @kirkindog Even if you would have got the seven points, you would still have lost by a touchdown. SUCK IT UP!! STEELERS BABY!!

  • @kirkindog I'm hip! And he even throws in the Bum Philips line "this year we beat on the door, next year we're gonna kick the SOB in!" I was at the Astrodome when the team returned from Pittsburgh after the game. It's bad enough to play them in Pittsburgh but to get cheated in the process is too much to overcome. It was horrible. I've hated the Steelers ever since. 30 years...wow!

  • @DataLinkLayer2 Thanx, 4 Feeling My Pain All These Years Later, My Felow H-Towner!

  • @kirkindog lmao

  • @kirkindog Sounds like sour grapes to me,you opened up wide and recieved it bigtime in the rear.

  • @kirkindog The Steelers scored two more times after that, still would be same outcome.

  • @kirkindog im 42 homie and i remember that game fa sho & imma go as far as saying nearly the whole song is about the Oilers cuz if im not mistaken didn't the head coach Bum Phillips also say in the song "last year we knocked of the door and next year we gonna kick the son-of-B((*&tch in" rite? haha ps. Earl Campbell was one of coolest Full Backs eva!!!

  • @kittyslasher wow do you know that the way Detroit is portraded in news is not at all what its like there? But observing your comment means ethier you've never live there a day in your judgemental life or your just trying to put Detroit in a scenario that not at all true. You can pick which one I could care less, but if your not from there you can't talk on it, keep on your city and leave mines alone.

  • this was and is the junk!!

  • The beginning to this song is so damn funky and funny. This song came out 9 years before I was born. It's great and funky. I wish I was 21 back then to be dancing to this.

  • OMG...JR HIGH SCHOOL DANCE...THIS TAKES ME BACK

  • @TAMCLIF92 I think high school dances would restore order to sound code if this song came back to high school dances (or if similar sound code was implemented for the 2010s).

    heres the thing:

funk > hip hop (even if hip hop initially honored funk)

  • Wow! Can't believe it!

  • @1Mellodee, this was a bad cut back in the day.

    "Hit me from the rear"

This line and the voice used - "Any of you fellas need a tight end?"

"groin injury, groin injury" M.H. couldn't find any other football injury to mention?

Michael Henderson has an album titled "Fickle." What grown ass man titles his album "Fickle?" And when you see his pose on the album cover.......

    Hmm........

  • This was a major club jam in Detroit back in the day.

  • @ranus69 This is what Detroit music should sound like!

I think Michael Henderson is one of those artists who coulda knocked Motown sound off the map.

  • @ranus69 you can say that again!

too bad Detroit is now one of the "worst cities with a population higher than 100K". You can blame it on newer hip hop trash.

  • " THE PURE FUNK "

  • Oooooh Weee! This was the joint that ripped the walls down in the clubs!!!! LOL I was 16 with a fake ID enjoyin every minute of it. I had my Mom's Toyota Celica and $40 for the weekend. I was good to go, bro!!!! Now only if I could figure a way to sneek my girlfriend out the house then...Classic!!!!!

  • This is not our version of America anymore, Samurai--the world has moved on..and rap is the new way for those who perhaps cannot sing but are excellent lyricists. As for the content--they did not learn it in a vacuum. We set the stage with Parliament and other songs and most black musics focus on sex--"freaks" was destined to become ho's..and Pusherman, eventually paved the way for the 'pusher' to tell his side of the story. Why complain? I am tickled that this gen. reveres our time/music

  • asfdsfdaasfd

  • @Karlslasher80 you must have enjoyed ur "nigger" friends giving u full blast huh?

  • Classic!!!!

  • my best funk choooooon ever.

  • true classic funk

  • Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy a blast from the past ya'll was just watching the old soul trains and they were dancin to this in the soul train line, gimme dat, gimme dat, gimme dat heyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SUPER FUNK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1979 Monroe Jr. High in Inglewood California stand up!!!!!!!! The joint....

  • OMGeee....this is the cut right here.

  • @rhonzi It sure is and it still sounds as good as the first time I heard it.

  • OMGeee....this is the cut right here.

  • This is one of the greatest funk songs in the history of the genre, without question, argument, or denial.

The first time I heard this song, I went nuts trying to find it. I am so glad I know the name and artist now.

The Mattel Electronic Football II sampling makes it even more epic and awesome. This song is made of so much WIN that it makes lose seem virtually nonexistent.

Thank you VERY much for uploading it. This is the music of champions... not like this crap we have nowadays.

  • between the Wide Receivers and the Clean-up Women, the US ain't a safe place to live! i going back home on de first thing smoking!

  • Hit me with your wide receiver!

  • you're a fucking idiot!!!!

  • I thought this was referring to a baseball-game!

  • @Elisabeth1903 But the name of the song is "Wide Receiver"...
