Sorry, no idea how ANYONE can criticize his voice, I first heard him back in the 70's probably around the time of his death, and have loved him ever since, he had a quality of velvet smoothness, huge legato and a pathos unmatched, yet he did not push or sound heavy or strangled like some of the other great Baritones of the time, he was a gifted singer IMHO, thanks for posting this its a gem
@Volfeng Ots simply doesn't have the dark-hues that a baritone should have; he sounds like a tenor.
That said, he's a great singer; I think he does a better job, mostly, than Lawrence Tibbett though Tibbett also impresses me as the better dramatist, even though he's not the better singer.
@SatchmoSings i believe his voice is called lyrical baritone, which is lighter and overlaps more with tenor than somewhat lower and more powerful dramatic baritone.
He sounds like he's 70 yrs old! & There's a weird "sonic" thing happening in his vibrato similar 2 that of Pertile when I listen 2 his 1st ever recordings:( It's good but U better believe it ain't no Tibbett...not even close!
The most beautiful man's voice I've ever heard in my life. Love him since my early childhood - more than 25 years. And I don't care that there are some voices more powerful or more highly skilled - he's the best for me. And this aria... What a great playing! My heart bleeds for this Renato!.. I bloody believe him! And he makes me cry out of sympathy!..
dark voice my a**. cant u hear a high musicality here. he was a really great interpreter who did'nt just sing the notes, but also trying to give some feelings and emotions.. he was also an excellent actor :) much more better than opera singers usually...
He is a little too tenoral for a Verdi baritone. Two shades darker would have been far better; he would sound less nasal too if he had got it. There must be a balance between the focusing hook-up and the optimal nasalisation. He reminds me a little of Caruso who was a dark tenor.
What comes to party membership etc we must remember how the times were at the time. It looks to me that it only gave him as much freedom as a musician as it was possible in those days. He even got to sing in Scandinavia and here in Finland during those times of extreme control.
Friends of estrade singing should check out "Meloodia" by Ots and music of Raimond Valgre.
KribuKleo is correct. Ots was certainly not a KGB agent, but he WAS a fully-fledged opera singer, wildly popular with audiences and critics alike. Please get your facts straight before posting in order to avoid making foolish comments.
Whether or not Ots' essentially lyric instrument is suited to this role is another question entirely. I absolutely adore Ots (as anyone can see from my Youtube page) but tend to prefer other baritones in Verdi.
Magnificant!!!

Ots' voice is not dark enough for a baritone; that aside, I think he sings better than Lawrence Tibbett . .. and that's a tremendous complement.

this incredibly stupid legend of the baritones having to have a dark voice!
it is just that, just a legend! most first interprets chosen by Verdi himself were very high baritone...
here the criticism could be that of an awful pronunciation, but the accent is always right

He was in first place opera singer, not only operetta. And he was not a KGB Agent.

He was operetta singer and KGB Agent, so this Renato is too much for his light tender voice.

It sound horrible, but must be the recording. Maybe in live the voice is darker, this way it sound like histerical.
