@CommunistPowers uhm, yeah, i'm convicted that the number suits the movie. Have you an idea about how many are 25000 soldiers? The sight when Derethor sees the army make me think that probably are not more than this number
In the book the number is significantly higher and different: there are a lot of allied in the East Coalition and more Mordor and West Men in Sauron army
@CommunistPowers in the movie the number is a lot smaller, like 25 000 orcs (+ easterlings visible during the charge at the gate and Haradrims) and gondor defence was 1/10 in number than orcs.
In the book anyway the number is a lot higher (if i'm not wrong not more than 90000 including West Men, but more probably less) , and also the East Men are many more (in total around 15000), because there are also Dol Amroth and Arnor allies, and other gondor soldiers from the other cities

@pat5168 Well I believe minas Tirith had a garrison of 10,000 soldiers but they were later reinforced prior to the battle with an army of 3,000 men. Overall though, I don't think anyone can be completely sure as all these numbers are theoretical and tokien usually used the terms around, in referencing the sheer scope of the armies at the time. often times though, he preferred the usage of great host or hoard, ect.
@Tneisnart Well anyways Rohan and Gondor both fought great. But I just have the intuition that I would choose to Gondor as my ally if I had to choose.
@CommunistPowers what do you mean non canon? @pat5168 True. obviously, its always best to read the book but even if you judge though the movies, Mordor uruks are clearly superior to Sarumans uruks in watching they're kdr in both movies. Also they had all nine Nazgul against them, catapults, siege towers, and reinforcements. Overall, Gondorians fight better than Rohan.
@pat5168 could have fallen back? minas tirith was the last stronghold gondor had. there was no where to fall back to. it was the best defensible position they had.
@CommunistPowers 1/2 Sorry I was cutting away unnecessary details so it would fit under 500 characters. But it was about 2,700 total Gondorians with the provinces' help. Considering how Denethor never called for such help in the movie I'll just say it's about 3,000 city guards since with the power of movie I can do that. I remember that they said there were 200,000 Orcs (Only them) in the huge ass army during the siege. Then there were the Corsairs and the Oliphaunts.
@CommunistPowers Forces of Mordor: "This army comprised 250,000 orcs and men, who had allied with Sauron, and also trolls. Even though those Rohan soldiers in Helm's Deep weren't nearly as trained as the Gondorians. Remember that there are 200,000 Orcs in this fight, plus they have siege towers, Grond, the Nazgul, and battle trolls. At Helm's Deep there were just 10,000 Orcs. Plus I think the Gondorians kicked ass for their part.
@pat5168 10,000 Uruk-hai. huge difference between orcs and uruks. the uruks were well organuzed, well armored, and well armed. they also had gun powder.
@yammyUFC4life Well if you look at it that way and if you look at the way the movie played out the books I actually saw a director's cut kind of video where Peter Jackson said that the regular kind of Orcs would look pathetic compared to the Uruks. To solve that problem he made some prominent Orcs that have the dark lobstered plate armor, nicknamed the "Uber-Hai". Plus I didn't really see much of a difference between the way the Orcs at Helm's Deep and the ones at Minas Tirith fought.
@pat5168 gimli summed it up pretty well "This is no rabble of mindless orcs, these are uruk-hai. Their armor is thick and their shields broad." just look at the armor and weapons they used at helms deep vs minas tirith. at helms deep they had full plate armor, steel swords, steel shield, pikes, and crossbows compared to a variety of clothing/armor and crude weaponry used at minas tirith. they were bigger, taller, faster, stronger, resilient to sunlight, and smarter.
@yammyUFC4life 2/2 But with strong discipline, you can have ranks of Orcs efficiently cutting through whole battalions. At the end of battle, discipline and order almost always wins. Notice that both victories in these movies were due to a successful orderly cavalry charge while their opponent was disarrayed and out of order.
@yammyUFC4life 1/2 True. I noticed how the Uruks knew exactly what they were doing and did things very precise without it turning sloppy. Whereas the Orcs at Minas Tirith sort of fought savagely but not like the Uruks. In battle, discipline is much more important than courage in my opinion. << But I take that seriously. Like you might get scared of one Orc cutting his way through a few lines. But after all he only killed at most a dozen.
@yammyUFC4life and mordors forces weren't organized eighter? The orcs of mordor are also heavily armored, in some cases more so. Ok, so the uruk-hai have mines, the mordor orcs have ongagers that luanch flaming and explding ordinance! Also, mordor had beeter logistics in that they employed siege towers, battering rams, artillery barages, ect. All Isengard had was ladders and a few mines.
@Tneisnart the orcs of mordor more heavily armored? that is a very innacurate statement. and they are not onagers, they are a psuedo trebuchet with a fixed counterweight. the use of a basket is innacurate it would have been a sling. that is a big missunderstanding in medieval weapons blueprints they would leave out important parts in case they would fall into enemy hands, in this case the sling was left out. so people put a bucket on. half as effective as a sling. ...............................
@yammyUFC4life uh, no, I'm pretty sure they are onagers. Onagers worked on a torch system in which strong sinew ropes are stretched and twisted to bring down the arm of the weapon which is then released by striking the arms pin with a hammer. Trebuchets worked on a counterweight based system in which weights would be placed on the other side of a the arm and the arm would have a giant sling attached to it. releasing a trigger would let the arm go allowing the weights to bring the arm around.
@yammyUFC4life Assuming I'm watching these videos on youtube, i think i have seen the movie. At pellenor, the orcs are winding up the siege engines, something you don't do when using a trebuchet. Furthermore, counterweight based siege engine typically have a bucket with weights attached to the arm on pins. The orcs onagers lack this. Orcs release they're weapons with a hammer while The gondorians trebuchet are released using a rope and lever because they are different siege weapons.
@Tneisnart i am sorry but you have very little grasp on siege weapons. they are winding down the arm, the same thing you do with a trebuchet. in no place do they use twisted sinew for a actual force. its the big rock on the end. hence a fixed counterweight trebuchet. the gondorians have a free weight trebuchet, more effective since the weight can travel in a straighter path towards the ground. and counterweight based siege weapons almost ALWAYS have slings. read up on them it is interesting
@yammyUFC4life I notice everytime I post facts, you turn the argument around pretending you know which you don't and act like I am the uneducated one. All your doing is repeating what I say. I know the differences between the various types of siege weapons as reading up on medieval warfare is a hobby and I have been to renaisance and SCA events (not a member) where they shot trebuchet, ect. YOU DO NOT WIND DOWN TREBUCHET! ANY LAYMEN KNOWS THIS AS THEY AREN'T TORCH BASED DESIGNS!
@Tneisnart (part 2) Trebuchet have a loose rope at the end of the arm which the artillery men gently wind down, not wind up. when released by a lever, the attached bucket of weights brings the arm around throwing sling the arm around. Now, calling your bluff, what are the names of the various parts of a trebuchet? What are the names of the parts of an onager. Surely if you know what your talking about, you would know. Also explain why the orcs hit the pins on the weapons with
@Tneisnart now you are just pissing me off... THEY DO NOT USE THE ROPE THEY ARE WINDING DOWN FOR POWER! that is only to pull down the the release end to load it! and catapult is a generic term for anything that launches a projectile with the exception of gun powder based weapon such as cannon. an onager is a more specific term for a torsion (winded up sinew) weapon made famous by the romans.
@yammyUFC4life Again, The only facts you provide is regurgitated information I have already mentioned and you even stoop to the level of name calling. Not once have you answered one of my questions because you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. You clearly don't understand the books and you cant even understand what I'm talking about. Your wrong, catapults, though abused as a term, have an exact definition in opposition to onagers and aren't a generic term as you say.
@Tneisnart Also, your wrong again, very little of the power of the suspension ropes on a trebuchet are wound up for power, rather, they are used to pull the arm down by levers until when released, the counterweight provides the sling on the arm with enough kinetic energy of its own to throw the projectile as it is not a torsion based weapon. I would prefer to end this debate as you lack facts. Your a self proclaimed expert that claims knowledge on things you things you do not have.
@Tneisnart exactly! that is EXACTLY WHAT I SAID!!! and i quote "THEY DO NOT USE THE ROPE THEY ARE WINDING DOWN FOR POWER! that is only to pull down the the release end to load it!" none of it is for power. it is just to winch it down. and name calling? where. and catapult is not a generic term?
@Tneisnart hmm lets visit dictionary. -an ancient military engine for hurling stones, arrows, etc. there's there definition. weird because onagers and manganols do not fire arrows. they must be reffering to a ballista as well. that means it is a generic term because it cover anthing that launches stones or arrows! and who is wrong? i answered what the difference between a catapult and onager is, the only question you have asked. do not tell me i do not know what i am talking about
@Tneisnart merriam webster calls a catapult "an ancient military device for hurling missiles" missile is defined as "an object (as a weapon) thrown or projected usually so as to strike something at a distance <stones, artillery shells, bullets, and rockets are missiles" so a catapult is basically an ancient military device that can throw something to strike something at a distance. 100% generic of a term. now does that answer your question?!
@yammyUFC4life Ok answer me the other questions I asked. First, why do the Orcs release they're weapons with a hammer? Secondly why do the orc weapons have breaking pads? Trebuchet have neighter as they are released by a trigger instead and are not stopped by breaking pads. Your only valid point is the fact that they do have giant boulders attached to the ends of arms which doesn't not match the other aspects of the weapon they are using (hollywood misconceptions)
@Tneisnart Also, the weapons they are using are way too small to be trebuchet, If you know the size of what constitutes a trebuchet you would know. Now lets play devils advocate and assume I'm wrong and that the weapon is indeed a kinetic based weapon, it still is not a trebuchet. There is another type of siege weapon that fits the weapons size though is somewhat similar in design to a trebuchet. Can you guess what it is? Also, Merriam has multiple definition for terms.
@Tneisnart Actually, I take back my only point to you, In studying and reading actual historical texts, some Onagers actually indeed did have fixed weights on the ends. This was not used as a counterweight for kinetic energy like a tebuchet, rather, it was used on onagers that had wheels, like the ones the orcs had as to balance out the weight distribution so when fired, the Onager did not flip itself over. Also, the orcs weapons arm is attached to the base like an onager which trebuchet arent.
@Tneisnart also incorrect. pause at 1:17 of that same video. clearly you can see the arm has a an axle, unlike onagers which pivot on the actual sinew rope the arm is bound too. and the method of the release has nothing to do with the weapon. the rope holds down the arm the same way the same methods can be used for either. and the orcs weapon has a stop because it is using a bucket, which relies on the sudden stop when it hits the pad and the inertia in the rock to keep it flying. and yes
i know the orcs weapon is way to small for a trebuchet the movie did a pretty bad job with that there is no way that weapon would be able to throw a rock that size, that far if that exact weapon were to be built. and perhaps you are thinking of a mangonel, a kind of multishot onager? for shits and giggles i tryped "types of catapults" into google and thats funny trebuchet was included on that list.
@yammyUFC4life Well yeah, the weapon uses is quite inacurrate. Yes, it is a mangonel but keep in mind Mangonel means "engine of war" and may refer to a trebuchet, greek Katapultos, ballista, or onager. Within the Mangonel family, it most resembles a onager as it is connected to the base, has breaking pads, and has a balance weight to ensure the wepon doesnt flip over which wheeled onager have, and a anitlever spring. Historically, Mangonel, not catapult was broadly use to refer to siege weapons
@Tneisnart and catapult means "shield piercer". lol irrelevant. for the third time, it is not connected at the base, it has an axle through the arm. second, it does not has a "balance weight", that weight is a counterweight used to fire the machine. and according to Medieval Life and Times- "Any machine that hurls an object can be considered a catapult"
@yammyUFC4life Wrong, the term "shield piercer" is a common Anglo mistranslation of the original Greek term of katapultos. In Greek Kata means downwards and Pultos means circular shield. This was because the front arms resembled a a small round shield. The original actual catapult was the forerunner of a ballista type weapons, not bombardment style artillery which it later was associated with. The term Shield Piercer later became associated with the katapultos as it shot large bolts at troops.
@yammyUFC4life part 3, Ok, here is another one for you, in the movie, the orcs say CATAPULTS! Now, it being a movie, some of the weapon accuracy is a bit off however the term catapult is a very generic term for torch based weaponry. However I'm sure even Peter Jackson knew the difference between torch based weaponry and counterweight based weaponry and is why he had the orcs say "catapult". Now here is another question sir knowledgeable what is the difference between an onager and catapult?
..................... and push siege towers from isengard to helms deep without trolls in a days time? impossible. isengard had light ladders to ascend the 30 foot deeping wall, and heavy ladders using the assistance of ballistas to winch them up to the hornburg's 100 ft wall. and a few mines? so easily overlooked. without the mines they would have not been able to breach the wall. and they had a ram they used to breach the gates to the hornburg. going by the movies (vastly different than the...
...... book), helms deep had approximately 600 defenders, including the elves. they faced an army of 10,000 uruks. minas tirith had a garrison of approximately 10,000, and they faced an army of approximately 200,000 orcs. now you must remember very few of the men at helms deep were fit soldiers, save the elves led by haldir. for each warrior there were about 17 uruks. at minas tirith, about 20 for every soldier.
@yammyUFC4life Well if you want to judge as in the book as your doing, there were no elves at helms deep, Just peasant rohirrim. Haldir was in lothlorien defending it from orcs from the misty mountains. Also, those 200,000 orcs at Pellenor werent ordinary orcs. The majority of them were black Uruks and Morannon orcs with mabey some average orcs/goblins in the background. Armored Olog hai were also present as well as easterlings and haradrim and warg calvary bringing the number around to 270,000
@Tneisnart i expicitly said "going by the movies" yes they had no elves in the book, but they had far more rohhirim. and that is true they were the mordor uruk hai, but they were still a rabble compared to isengards uruks
@501stlegionnaire I'd be scared but at the same time I would have the courage to pick up a sword and kick some mordor ass if either aragorn or boromir were my leader.
@ They have already made a mod for Lord of the Rings :) Its called Third Age and is a really good game based on the LOTR story :) but to use it you must have M2tw
@BumbleBrook Only in the Film ,In the Book all Haradrims even with Mumakils got pwned ,but then Eomer got surounded with his Eorl after Theodens death ,and then Aragorn came with the man form south cities and allies of gondor on black ships (no undead army :) ]
@Iwouldfuckgirlsaloud one are hardcore warriors the others suck balls morannon orcs who attack minas tirith are about 8 feet tall the ones from the first film are about 5 feet tall and even uruks are only 6-7 feet tall do the rest of the research yourself
@Iwouldfuckgirlsaloud i know what he meant but the uruk-hai would not beat the Morgannon orcs, only the shitty orcs in the battle of the last alliance
I love it but the scene with Gandalf and the Witchking is really stupid. Gandalf is so weak and has not even a chance against him. It is just a strange and lucky coincidence that he survived. Gandalf the white wizard - I expected a glorious fight and Gandalf dislodging the Witchking.
@devilkera I did! :P also at 1:49 the easterlings rush in behind the wargs!
I was grounded my 6th gr summer, so all i did was watch LOTR... I can quote all 3 movies and know what songs go fpr what part of the trilogy. I LOOOOVE LOTR! the movies were wonderful, but the books were amazing if you read lotr then the silmarillion then lotr again, it makes it sooooo much more emotional!
@narm16 "I'd be blowing the shit out if it all day." thats what she said ;P jk... and I got a large ox horn I bought through ebay looks exactly like Boromir's horn (Horn of Gondor.) just without the fancy bronze designs which I'm thinking about making for it.
@andrezituu1 where are you from... i was not interested in sw anymore, but i miss the old times... i want to play all games , watch the movies and the cartoons again... can't wait !!! peace !!!
someone needs to tell Gandalf that saying "go back to the abyss" or "Return to the Shadow" just doesn't work. I mean come on, you'd think he'd learn the first time
The Battle for Minas Tirith reminds me of the Battle of Vienna 1683. Just when Vienna was about to fall, the Polish Winged cavalry arrive and made a glorious charge which destroyed the enemy utterly. This is very similar.
@NiroTheHiro umm no im pretty sure a meter long piece of rotting wood would NOT stop a charging horse before it crushes you regardless of your formation.
@liamdudeeee in the defense of the orcs lol those pikes you see were that short because the Siege of Gondor was just that, a siege and a cut off city that was besieged would not be able to mount an effective large scale cavalry charge. The Rohan charge lifted the siege and the orcs were not expecting this. You hear an orc comander set a rear guard for the charge in the back AFTER Rohan sounds horns. Pikes like that were givenen to the least expierenced fighters those were orc reserves

@pat5168 gimli summed it up pretty well "This is no rabble of mindless orcs, these are uruk-hai. Their armor is thick and their shields broad." just look at the armor and weapons they used at helms deep vs minas tirith. at helms deep they had full plate armor, steel swords, steel shield, pikes, and crossbows compared to a variety of clothing/armor and crude weaponry used at minas tirith. they were bigger, taller, faster, stronger, resilient to sunlight, and smarter.
yammyUFC4life 7 months ago
@yammyUFC4life 2/2 But with strong discipline, you can have ranks of Orcs efficiently cutting through whole battalions. At the end of battle, discipline and order almost always wins. Notice that both victories in these movies were due to a successful orderly cavalry charge while their opponent was disarrayed and out of order.
pat5168 7 months ago
@yammyUFC4life 1/2 True. I noticed how the Uruks knew exactly what they were doing and did things very precise without it turning sloppy. Whereas the Orcs at Minas Tirith sort of fought savagely but not like the Uruks. In battle, discipline is much more important than courage in my opinion. << But I take that seriously. Like you might get scared of one Orc cutting his way through a few lines. But after all he only killed at most a dozen.
pat5168 7 months ago
@yammyUFC4life and mordors forces weren't organized eighter? The orcs of mordor are also heavily armored, in some cases more so. Ok, so the uruk-hai have mines, the mordor orcs have ongagers that luanch flaming and explding ordinance! Also, mordor had beeter logistics in that they employed siege towers, battering rams, artillery barages, ect. All Isengard had was ladders and a few mines.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart the orcs of mordor more heavily armored? that is a very innacurate statement. and they are not onagers, they are a psuedo trebuchet with a fixed counterweight. the use of a basket is innacurate it would have been a sling. that is a big missunderstanding in medieval weapons blueprints they would leave out important parts in case they would fall into enemy hands, in this case the sling was left out. so people put a bucket on. half as effective as a sling. ...............................
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life uh, no, I'm pretty sure they are onagers. Onagers worked on a torch system in which strong sinew ropes are stretched and twisted to bring down the arm of the weapon which is then released by striking the arms pin with a hammer. Trebuchets worked on a counterweight based system in which weights would be placed on the other side of a the arm and the arm would have a giant sling attached to it. releasing a trigger would let the arm go allowing the weights to bring the arm around.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart have you even watched LOTR??? the orcs at minas tirth used catapults with a fixed weight.
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Assuming I'm watching these videos on youtube, i think i have seen the movie. At pellenor, the orcs are winding up the siege engines, something you don't do when using a trebuchet. Furthermore, counterweight based siege engine typically have a bucket with weights attached to the arm on pins. The orcs onagers lack this. Orcs release they're weapons with a hammer while The gondorians trebuchet are released using a rope and lever because they are different siege weapons.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart i am sorry but you have very little grasp on siege weapons. they are winding down the arm, the same thing you do with a trebuchet. in no place do they use twisted sinew for a actual force. its the big rock on the end. hence a fixed counterweight trebuchet. the gondorians have a free weight trebuchet, more effective since the weight can travel in a straighter path towards the ground. and counterweight based siege weapons almost ALWAYS have slings. read up on them it is interesting
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life I notice everytime I post facts, you turn the argument around pretending you know which you don't and act like I am the uneducated one. All your doing is repeating what I say. I know the differences between the various types of siege weapons as reading up on medieval warfare is a hobby and I have been to renaisance and SCA events (not a member) where they shot trebuchet, ect. YOU DO NOT WIND DOWN TREBUCHET! ANY LAYMEN KNOWS THIS AS THEY AREN'T TORCH BASED DESIGNS!
Tneisnart 6 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@Tneisnart (part 2) Trebuchet have a loose rope at the end of the arm which the artillery men gently wind down, not wind up. when released by a lever, the attached bucket of weights brings the arm around throwing sling the arm around. Now, calling your bluff, what are the names of the various parts of a trebuchet? What are the names of the parts of an onager. Surely if you know what your talking about, you would know. Also explain why the orcs hit the pins on the weapons with
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart now you are just pissing me off... THEY DO NOT USE THE ROPE THEY ARE WINDING DOWN FOR POWER! that is only to pull down the the release end to load it! and catapult is a generic term for anything that launches a projectile with the exception of gun powder based weapon such as cannon. an onager is a more specific term for a torsion (winded up sinew) weapon made famous by the romans.
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Again, The only facts you provide is regurgitated information I have already mentioned and you even stoop to the level of name calling. Not once have you answered one of my questions because you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. You clearly don't understand the books and you cant even understand what I'm talking about. Your wrong, catapults, though abused as a term, have an exact definition in opposition to onagers and aren't a generic term as you say.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart Also, your wrong again, very little of the power of the suspension ropes on a trebuchet are wound up for power, rather, they are used to pull the arm down by levers until when released, the counterweight provides the sling on the arm with enough kinetic energy of its own to throw the projectile as it is not a torsion based weapon. I would prefer to end this debate as you lack facts. Your a self proclaimed expert that claims knowledge on things you things you do not have.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@Tneisnart exactly! that is EXACTLY WHAT I SAID!!! and i quote "THEY DO NOT USE THE ROPE THEY ARE WINDING DOWN FOR POWER! that is only to pull down the the release end to load it!" none of it is for power. it is just to winch it down. and name calling? where. and catapult is not a generic term?
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@Tneisnart hmm lets visit dictionary. -an ancient military engine for hurling stones, arrows, etc. there's there definition. weird because onagers and manganols do not fire arrows. they must be reffering to a ballista as well. that means it is a generic term because it cover anthing that launches stones or arrows! and who is wrong? i answered what the difference between a catapult and onager is, the only question you have asked. do not tell me i do not know what i am talking about
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@Tneisnart merriam webster calls a catapult "an ancient military device for hurling missiles" missile is defined as "an object (as a weapon) thrown or projected usually so as to strike something at a distance <stones, artillery shells, bullets, and rockets are missiles" so a catapult is basically an ancient military device that can throw something to strike something at a distance. 100% generic of a term. now does that answer your question?!
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Ok answer me the other questions I asked. First, why do the Orcs release they're weapons with a hammer? Secondly why do the orc weapons have breaking pads? Trebuchet have neighter as they are released by a trigger instead and are not stopped by breaking pads. Your only valid point is the fact that they do have giant boulders attached to the ends of arms which doesn't not match the other aspects of the weapon they are using (hollywood misconceptions)
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart Also, the weapons they are using are way too small to be trebuchet, If you know the size of what constitutes a trebuchet you would know. Now lets play devils advocate and assume I'm wrong and that the weapon is indeed a kinetic based weapon, it still is not a trebuchet. There is another type of siege weapon that fits the weapons size though is somewhat similar in design to a trebuchet. Can you guess what it is? Also, Merriam has multiple definition for terms.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart Actually, I take back my only point to you, In studying and reading actual historical texts, some Onagers actually indeed did have fixed weights on the ends. This was not used as a counterweight for kinetic energy like a tebuchet, rather, it was used on onagers that had wheels, like the ones the orcs had as to balance out the weight distribution so when fired, the Onager did not flip itself over. Also, the orcs weapons arm is attached to the base like an onager which trebuchet arent.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart also incorrect. pause at 1:17 of that same video. clearly you can see the arm has a an axle, unlike onagers which pivot on the actual sinew rope the arm is bound too. and the method of the release has nothing to do with the weapon. the rope holds down the arm the same way the same methods can be used for either. and the orcs weapon has a stop because it is using a bucket, which relies on the sudden stop when it hits the pad and the inertia in the rock to keep it flying. and yes
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
i know the orcs weapon is way to small for a trebuchet the movie did a pretty bad job with that there is no way that weapon would be able to throw a rock that size, that far if that exact weapon were to be built. and perhaps you are thinking of a mangonel, a kind of multishot onager? for shits and giggles i tryped "types of catapults" into google and thats funny trebuchet was included on that list.
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Well yeah, the weapon uses is quite inacurrate. Yes, it is a mangonel but keep in mind Mangonel means "engine of war" and may refer to a trebuchet, greek Katapultos, ballista, or onager. Within the Mangonel family, it most resembles a onager as it is connected to the base, has breaking pads, and has a balance weight to ensure the wepon doesnt flip over which wheeled onager have, and a anitlever spring. Historically, Mangonel, not catapult was broadly use to refer to siege weapons
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart and catapult means "shield piercer". lol irrelevant. for the third time, it is not connected at the base, it has an axle through the arm. second, it does not has a "balance weight", that weight is a counterweight used to fire the machine. and according to Medieval Life and Times- "Any machine that hurls an object can be considered a catapult"
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Wrong, the term "shield piercer" is a common Anglo mistranslation of the original Greek term of katapultos. In Greek Kata means downwards and Pultos means circular shield. This was because the front arms resembled a a small round shield. The original actual catapult was the forerunner of a ballista type weapons, not bombardment style artillery which it later was associated with. The term Shield Piercer later became associated with the katapultos as it shot large bolts at troops.
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life part 3, Ok, here is another one for you, in the movie, the orcs say CATAPULTS! Now, it being a movie, some of the weapon accuracy is a bit off however the term catapult is a very generic term for torch based weaponry. However I'm sure even Peter Jackson knew the difference between torch based weaponry and counterweight based weaponry and is why he had the orcs say "catapult". Now here is another question sir knowledgeable what is the difference between an onager and catapult?

..................... and push siege towers from isengard to helms deep without trolls in a days time? impossible. isengard had light ladders to ascend the 30 foot deeping wall, and heavy ladders using the assistance of ballistas to winch them up to the hornburg's 100 ft wall. and a few mines? so easily overlooked. without the mines they would have not been able to breach the wall. and they had a ram they used to breach the gates to the hornburg. going by the movies (vastly different than the...
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
...... book), helms deep had approximately 600 defenders, including the elves. they faced an army of 10,000 uruks. minas tirith had a garrison of approximately 10,000, and they faced an army of approximately 200,000 orcs. now you must remember very few of the men at helms deep were fit soldiers, save the elves led by haldir. for each warrior there were about 17 uruks. at minas tirith, about 20 for every soldier.
yammyUFC4life 6 months ago
@yammyUFC4life Well if you want to judge as in the book as your doing, there were no elves at helms deep, Just peasant rohirrim. Haldir was in lothlorien defending it from orcs from the misty mountains. Also, those 200,000 orcs at Pellenor werent ordinary orcs. The majority of them were black Uruks and Morannon orcs with mabey some average orcs/goblins in the background. Armored Olog hai were also present as well as easterlings and haradrim and warg calvary bringing the number around to 270,000
Tneisnart 6 months ago
@Tneisnart i expicitly said "going by the movies" yes they had no elves in the book, but they had far more rohhirim. and that is true they were the mordor uruk hai, but they were still a rabble compared to isengards uruks
