I HATE that I had to miss out on this. And worse, I was born in Macon and lived in Jones County all my life and have now moved to Athens for college. It is unbelievable, sometimes, to think of all the magic that happened about 30 minutes down the road from where I live. Luckily, there are still many people there trying to keep Macon's great musical history alive. If anybody is in Macon on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, there is a benefit tribute concert in Central City Park called Skydog.
@duanehendrix008 All that is asked to get into Skydog is to bring canned goods. It is an awesome concert that features many great musicians from all over. Paul Hornsby has played several times now and two years ago Alan Walden spoke about Duane at the concert. If you get the chance, it is MORE than worth to go.
@wmosco Fast speed a good song does not make. If that was true than heavy metal would be just as good as this. The allman brothers weren't good because the played fast they played well because they each knew their instruments inside and out.
In my early teens Allman Brothers was the first group and album I heard and had to buy. Duanes' musical creativity is the best and his talent to add in guitar lics is unique and anyone since then has been doing this, and today, from time to time, I listen to the Allman Brothers music. Thanks Youtube.
My Dad was the drummer for "Two Guns-Balls Out" a band signed in 1979 by Capricorn Records with the Allman Brothers. Check out their music on youtube if you love classic southern rock n roll!
Just like in the studio - Duane with first lead, then Dickey. Only difference is the channel (speaker) sides. In studio Duane comes through on left, Dickey on right. On this recording it is the opposite. Can't wait to get the refurbished sound on CD this coming week! LOVE me some ORIGINAL ABB! RIP Duane and Barry. I've been to Rose Hill Cemetery - back in 2000. A special place
@DictionRedaction Thanks! It's all okay, in the spirit of the ABB. I love music, theirs especially. And in music, we have a common thread, a peace. As a great friend of mine from Chicago always says..."It's all good". Great music becomes a part of our lives.
(11-23-11) From ABB store website: A day does not go by that we don't get a call in the Hittin' the Note office asking when the 2nd ABB Archive, Stonybrook 9/19/71, is going to be reprinted. Sooo, we're really excited to tell you that this incredible CD will be back in stock on December 6th, 2011! The Stonybrook archive has what many fans consider to be the very best versions of "Blue Sky" (extremely rare) and "Dreams" ever captured live by the original lineup.
What a magical time growing up. I feel bad for my daughters (14 and 15) and the cookie cutter canned shit they listen to. WTF is a Nickleback anyway??
@jeff8231 You're right brother. If it weren't for the great bands I listened to growing up, I don't know if I ever would have picked up the guitar and learned to play. I know some young people who love the jam bands and being here in New England, there's plenty of opportunity to explore that great music scene today.
To explain, about a half dozen of us were setting up for the evening show, in the gym,on a beautiful afternoon and Duane came in, and started to mess around with his guitar. One by one the band came in and joined in. The result was the most incredible spontaneous half hour jam I have ever heard. The boys rocked hard, and jammed something special, totally unrelated to their tunes. When they stopped, they just smiled at each other and silently walked off the stage.... A beautiful day indeed...
@timbuckleyphoto - Holy crap, you are truly blessed! I saw them at the Fillmore East on 3/12/71 when they recorded that classic live album with the mighty Johnny Winter headlining the show. Hey, I guess I'm blessed too! So didja get to talk to Duane, Berry or any of the other guys when you saw them?
@timbuckleyphoto: when and where was this? I was born a decade too late and in a different country and continent and missed out seeing these great musicians, well thanks to the internet i can alleast meet people in the virtual world who have seen and heard them play.
I was the lucky person who got to hold s spotlight on Duane as he played his music that day. It was a memorable show. Earlier in the afternoon, the boys played a spontaneous jam that only a half dozen of us in the gym heard. It is still one of the most unforgetable moments for me in all the years I worked in Rock..
Forty years ago at the age of 18, I moved from LA to Detroit (I know go figure)... I paid $75 dollars for the best stereo I could afford. The salesman "closed" the deal by giving me my choice of any album in the store. I chose "Eat a Peach"... Three albums later, a few cassettes and cd's (all worn out)... It still give this old rocknroller goosebumps!
God bless you, Smokeyman! -Money can't buy it nowadays and if it wasn't for the kindness of people such as yourself using youtube in the most beautiful way...Thank you so much for this rare gem
Duane wasn't just a great guitar player, he could orchestrate solos on the fly, his use of dynamics, tempo, double-stops, octaves, repeated phrases build his solos into stories that have arcs, peaks and valleys. The band responded in kind.
Listen to this while you can because it was pulled last time it was posted and the CD is unavailable. Performances like this are rare gems worth all the praise seen in the other comments.
I read in an interview with Duane and Berry Oakley that SUNY Stonybrook was one of their favorite venues to play, along with the Warehouse in New Orleans.
I'm a Macon Georgia man and found the Brothers back in 72 at Central City park in Macon. They use to play there on Sundays and you never knew who would be playing with them because Capricorn Records was right down the road. They use to carry all their equipment in an old U-Haul truck painted white with mushroom on the back door. Throwing a football and listening to some of the best music in the world. Blue Sky will be played at my funeral cause nobody can be sad with this song playing
@Biker4hd You got it my friend - Duane and company ARE the best of America ...all the way to California ...count yourself blessed to be a first hand witness to this true modern Mozart ...the music will never, ever be forgoten...
Duane absolutely crushes his solo from about the 2:00 mark through about 5:00 minute mark then he and Dickie link up and play together for about a minute . From that point forward Dickie kills his solo. Blue Sky is, was and will forever be Dickie's song.
ther are so few musician left in the world. Think duane, dickie betts, eddie, jeff beck, Eric, steve howe, robin trower....Though I do like the foofighters, radiohead and Muse...music is dead
PEOPLE! Behold the mind-bending fluidity and coherence of Duane Skyman Allman's impromptu solos! Perfect improvisation; one of his best, and one of the best of all time of course.
