The Caprice is coming back as the Caprice, it is alot bigger than the Commadore and is geared to take over the Police market due to Ford discontinuing the Crown Victoria. I know that alot of cities and State bought alot of Crown Vic's that are just sitting in yards....mechanics love'em and hated to See them go. I hope that they bring the Commadore in under an orginal name, it's no Chevelle!
EVERYBODY THAT LIVES IN NORTH AMERICA LISTEN UP! Chevrolet annouced that we will get the holden commodore as a chevrolet caprice and we will get the commodre ute as a chevrolet El Camino!
Ok Aussie's when is the commodore due to come to the U.S. again. Unfortunately the economy had to go in a recession so we lost the G8, but luckily enough i was able to get one. Motor trend is hinting at commodore (G8) is coming back to the U.S. this year 2011 as a chevy? supposively caprice was ruled out but a lot of people are thinking chevelle?
F*ckin' Aussies are doing what we SHOULD be doing if Chevy had the balls. The Pontiac G8 was everything the 21st century muscle car should be. I hope GM brings this street predator over here, but I doubt they ever will. You Aussies are a lucky bunch of b*stards! ;)
This is why I hated Pontiac! They just took a car from Holden and named it the "Pontiac GTO" they should of redesigned a whole new car!!! Hopefully Chevrolet doesn't do this!!!!!!!!
@Jordanjschaecher But you guys aren't getting new ones with pontiac dead. The closest you get is the Chevy Caprice (Holden Caprice) which has a longer wheel base and doesn't look sporty.
@scarblade234 2013, with the release of the new model. It will wear Chevrolet Lumina badges just like it does in the Middle East, and the Commodore ute is also coming as the Chevrolet El Camino
@Mechknight73 I've seen "spy" pictures of the next model commodore. Looks a bit like a cross between a chevy volt and a ford falcon (The commodore's biggest competitor in australia). Subscribe to my channel cause i'll make a vid containing the spy pics. I also have a few vids on the HSV E3 GTS, it's Holden's super commodore.
Just saw a Commodore yesterday here in Cali near Newport Beach on the I5. At first I though it was just a rebadged Pontiac G8 since it didn't look like it was RHD, but the front was that of the Holden. I could be wrong though about it being a Commodore though. Had a V badge on the trunk too.
@Orangys280Z yeah. In Australia, idiots import chevy badges and stick them on their commodores because of the american engine. true car lovers here hate them for doing it. If u like the g8/commodore, u should check out the HSV GTS, hsv.com.au
@scarblade234 Not sure about over there but out here idiots like to put Honda badges on their Acuras because it's "JDM" to me its funny how that works(though the listed are shit cars anyways). Just checked out that website, and those are some pretty awesome cars. If I had the money, I wouldn't mind importing one of those. Plus Pontiac is dead out here. GM killed it last year, sadly.
@Konformation07, i know about the G8, it was an amazing car. be4 (a long time ago) i thought it was a front wheel drive V6 like a cousin malibu, but had i known it was a distant relative of GM/Holden i woulda gotten 1 instead of a silverado. These cars are amazing, my hope is that GM will listen to consumers and bring cars like this back to the market of America.
@Tungsten23 It aint a distant cousin, it is a holden with a few new extra bits to make it look nice (like that ugly front grill!) and a pontiac badge. great car
@Tungsten23 They had a version in the USA called the Pontiac G8 go look it up and get one used because it's not coming back in fact it's not coming back until 2014 and by then we will have the next generation. So, this particular generation's time in the USA is no more.
@cafeflorab4 Because GM Chevrolet dropped the ball and went front wheel drive. Holden have been building their own Caprices since 1974. Holden did most of the R&D for the Chevy Camaro, built the Pontiac G8 and recent GTO. For some unknown reason, GM USA seems to think it's ok to build only front wheel drive sedans.
@cafeflorab4 Supposedly the next Chevy Caprice police cruiser is a left hand drive version of the Holden Caprice. All GM did to get it to America, is take the Saudi/ UAE version of the Chevy Caprice (aka Holden) and strip out everything they didn't need for police work.
@cafeflorab4 No it isn't; the Chevy Caprice that Holden will be building for the US police market will be a stripped down version. They would have used the Lumina version, but I guess legroom in the back and/or front (to allow for the "monkey cage") must be an issue to law enforcement agencies in America
@trevordohn1317 I think it's because GM USA thinks it would cost a fortune in setting up dealerships, brand awareness and other marketing. Just easier for them to whack a Chevy or Pontiac badge on it to sell it in the states
@brionnakennedy More like the other way round. The Chevy Lumina and Pontiac G8 are versions of this car. The Holden Commodore is designed, built and exported from Australia, albeit with a variety of badges on its nose
@makesmoney010 Wrong. The G8 may be gone, but there's a police-Spec Holden Caprice with Chevy badges headed your way in 2011, and the VE Commodore is still being exported to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and England. Possibly even South Africa as well. The Australian Caprice serves in Korea as a Daewoo, and China as a Buick Park Lane. The Caprice is a luxury LWB version of the Commodore
@Mechknight73 i seen a video on here showing off the new caprice police car for united states and they showed videos at the car show and at the track and it sounds good, got a nice growl to it
@Mechknight73@Mechknight73 hopefully i can man, they sound good now, fast too, man the way they look in the back reminds me of the Impala a little NOT THIS ONE THE CAPRICE see look at this video on here it's called caprice ss 2008
@makesmoney010 What you're seeing is the Arabian Caprice, the one Holden exports to the Saudis. They're loaded with just about everything you can think of, including LCD screens to watch DVDs in the back of the headrests, complete with wireless headphones.
I like the Holden commodore's but unfortunately ive never been able to afford them well i suppose that happens when your only 18 lol. Holden is a good company.. my mum has the Holden Frontier Special edition and 10 years later its still going good =)
Hey dont use your age as an excuse. Im only 17 and I own a VY executive with an SS body kit. got it for a bargin last year too. Excilent condition and the worst part was the stone chips on the bonnet. Mechanicaly its great. Just keep an eye out for a great deal. They go like the clappers and they are realy relyable. Great to drive too. Oh BTW Aussies have built some good shit for 15 years running because commodore has been the best selling car in australia for 15 years and still counting.
hahaha ur really not 18 are you. Im 18 and own a bmw, could easily have bought a commodore S tho had i wanted one at the time. They not expensive to own at 18 u can even pick up a VS under 5k ( the first decent commodore IMO). Even a VL is nice but good luck finding one thats not thrashed to the shithouse.
I don't really like going for second hand stuff... Never had much luck with anything second hand But oneday when I get AU$37,000 i'll buy one haha. Hey I'm 18... I just haven't go the best job Atm and I can't save even if my life depended on it haha
@87834649 Being part of GM has its advantages. Allows Holden to expand its export markets. Whereas GM USA were billions in debt, Holden was pulling about $80 million profit during the GFC. Not bad for a company that was $750 million in debt in 1987, and annual production was only about 50,000 a year
There very powerful, Well... I used to have a V6 so i used to push the throttle down more but when i did it in my new car it jolted for a secon then just flew off i was amazed!! And there luxurious and smooth to drive.
it all depends on how you look after the car..if the cars werent safe, then SASO wouldn't let them into KSA and the US government wouldnt let the Pontiac G8 (Chevrolet Lumina) into the USA. it depends if you take the car to a dealer that knows what to do when a car has some issues... any car can have a long life...it all depends on how u look after it.....
im sorry ill have to disagree blueblink8040.... not quite sure what you mean by "minimum requirements of safety".... i mean all of these cars come with ABS, ESP Traction Control, airbags (frontal and I believe the side and curtain airbags are an option)....along with seat belts...
With regards to other safety requirements, I guess it comes down to the driver....and as for the life of the car..ill have to disagree....
it's obvious that these cars don't live more than 3 years. I can see the owners of such this car complain how bad quality it has and also the parts are expansive to replase.
most holdens/chevy's that you see on the road are a lot older than 3 years, they dont break, they just depreciate quickly. btw a major advantage is towing capability.
@blueblink8040 minimum safety requirements? BULL SHIT!!!! this car has ABS, ESP, ATC, 6 airbags, and it was tested at 40 mph into a wall, and got the highest possible 5 stars out of 5. and can't live more than 3 years?? there are millions of 15 year old versions of this still running strong where i live. by time your opinion may have changed, but it is definately safe and reliable!
To all people that disagreed with me. I was talking about Chevy Lumina and Caprice which means the car brands that available in GCC countries,. The climate, streets, and environment of those countries are different from other countries. Lumina and Caprice might be good in Australia and USA but they are definitely can't live more than 3 years in GCC countries. I can show you the differences between these cars in accidents and you can compare them with other cars to see how unsafe they are.
Why would Holden invest one billion dollars to make a car not suited to the environments within its target market?
How about you search "Holden's Billion Dollar Baby, Making Of The VE " on youtube and watch all 5 episodes. it clearly shows testing for some of the worlds toughest conditions i.e its thrashed at its home nation Australia or the middle east, canada in winter.
Next time you comment maybe you should make sure you are atleast be slightly educated on the topic.
@elonaman117 Before you do, look up "HSV VE Club Sport R8." This is the Australian performance version of this model. Essentially take a VE SS and feed it steroids. To make it LHD, you only need to source the parts from a G8, as they're all interchangeable
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
it is junk big time. in fact . we have a saing about these cars back home , "you can go veeery fast yes, yet , nothing can stop you!" .. implaying the cars junky brakes and traction systems.
This car is sold here at the Pontiac G8. Pontiac is going away. There was talk about bringing it here as a Chevrolet Caprice, but that talk recently died. They will not give it to Buick because of the 2010 LaCrosse and Cadillac would not get it because of the CTS.
The sad thing is that GM already has two Chevy versions (obviously the Lumina and Caprice) and a Buick version (Roadmaster sold in China) on sale. I just don't see why they simply cannot rebadge the current G8 as any of these and continue sales of this Holden platform. Granted sales have not been spectacular for the G8, but a lower price point with more parts sharing could lead to a relatively affordable RWD sedan based on this platform - maybe a $24k to $36k price range would be ideal.
My mistake. It was the Park Avenue. I thought that the R&D for the U.S. impact standards already took place for the G8. It cant be that hard to simply change the front facia. Fuel economy may be an issue, but GM could offset the the gas mileage of the Holden platform with new more fuel efficient models just like other manufacturers do. Just an idea, but what you say is the sad and unfortunate truth. I still hope there is a future for this platform in the U.S.
They said it would have to crash test again. That Chevrolet fascia used in the Middle East won't work for the United States. GM is coming out with a series of small Chevys( Volt, Spark, Cruze and another one) and a Buick( based off Opel Astra). They announced yesterday Cadillac finally is getting a new rear drive flagship S Class and 7 Series fighter. You still have a point though. No affordable mid range GM (Oldsmobile /Pontiac like) cars.
@rev2987 The current model VE Holden Commodore (aka Pontiac G8) and WM Caprice (AKA Chevrolet Caprice police cruiser) are both based on the same architecture. The only difference is the rear end styling, and one has a little more legroom than the other. They allso have the Active Fuel Management system, which shuts down cylinders when not needed e.g idling in traffic. In 2011, you will see the kind of police car unseen in America before; one that doesn't slide round corners
im from aus and love my v8s my car atm also my frist car is a 2000 commodore SS im pumping out 320rwkw or about 430bhp but when you think about it its pritty much the same drive line sep the 0,3Ls
holden/ gm need to pull there finger out and build a 6L dohc motor and whip ford of the map
por quee chingados no hacen esos carros en México?? estan bien chingones yo no see pero voy a importar uno del lugar donde los fabriquen no me importa donde pero quiero uno aunque le apliquen aranceles y todo lo que quieran pero importaré uno de esos.....
on the contrary.... The cars are deisgned, built and manufacturered entirely by Holden. GM owns both Holden and Chevrolet therefore uses the Chevrolet badge on the Holdens once they are exported to foreign countries like the Middle East.... the VXR8 is from HSV (holden's specialized vehicle brand)...
Hey man, any teething issues with your SSV? Anything from door locks to leaks and sqeeks at all?I want to see how often these problems occur before I put my money down. Thanks.
Here's the thing, I don't understand why GM didn't invest money on a new DOHC Alloy V8 Engine rather than just stick to it's old style OHV Pushrods?I mean the OHVs are ok, only they drink alot of fuel and can;t match the power and rev output of the DOHCs. The thing that amazes me is that Holden's Alloytec V6 was made from DOHC design and it jumped from 152kw(VY) to 190kw(VZ), just imagine if the V8s are all DOHCs too, im sure it will be around 300KW mark and then some.
because ohv designed engines are less expensive to produce and make just as good power especially torque as the high tech versions. i guess from a marketing point of view it would be smart to make dohc engine to bragg about its technology. but being a v8 most want to modify nyway which means alot more $ with adohc. at the end of the day why mess with an engine that is smooth, cheap to run for a v8 and has a lot of potential in the aftermarket. you dont see top fuellers with the double set up
@mjok2004 The first Commodore in 1979 started as a "cloned" Opel Rekord. By the time Holden put it into production, they had strengthened, tweaked, overhauled, modified and otherwise restlyed almost every part of it. Testimony to Holden's engineers was that their first motorsport victory was in a rally. Eventually all it had in common with its Opel cousin was the outer skin and a few parts
oh and the chevy lumina ss in the arabian countries is another version of these also that started out with the 5.7l and upgraded to the 6.0l(the pontiac gto did this also)
and speaking of Monaro and Crappadore, they went to the states right? they went where they belong;), because they were designed by germans and americans int the 1st place, its OPEL, BUICK, VAUXHALL , CHEF, GMC,PONTIAC
Nicely done....

BoratsdumSun 2 years ago
it all depends on how you look after the car..if the cars werent safe, then SASO wouldn't let them into KSA and the US government wouldnt let the Pontiac G8 (Chevrolet Lumina) into the USA. it depends if you take the car to a dealer that knows what to do when a car has some issues... any car can have a long life...it all depends on how u look after it.....

piece of crap. These cars have minimum requirements of safety and don't live for more than 3 years.
The only advantages are that they are very fast, nice exterior design, and have wide seats.
blueblink8040 2 years ago
im sorry ill have to disagree blueblink8040.... not quite sure what you mean by "minimum requirements of safety".... i mean all of these cars come with ABS, ESP Traction Control, airbags (frontal and I believe the side and curtain airbags are an option)....along with seat belts...
With regards to other safety requirements, I guess it comes down to the driver....and as for the life of the car..ill have to disagree....
b00005097 2 years ago
ppl call this car " The Funeral"
the safety of this car are too old, i saw this car split into two halves in a car crash.
FDBarrY 2 years ago
@b00005097
it's obvious that these cars don't live more than 3 years. I can see the owners of such this car complain how bad quality it has and also the parts are expansive to replase.
amjadzx112 1 year ago
most holdens/chevy's that you see on the road are a lot older than 3 years, they dont break, they just depreciate quickly. btw a major advantage is towing capability.
warriorrabbi 2 years ago
@blueblink8040 your kidding they only last 3 years haha

@blueblink8040 I've had my VE SS commodore for at least three years now, its done over 130 000KM and I have never experienced any major problems :S
eXHAiLEClaN 1 year ago
@blueblink8040 minimum safety requirements? BULL SHIT!!!! this car has ABS, ESP, ATC, 6 airbags, and it was tested at 40 mph into a wall, and got the highest possible 5 stars out of 5. and can't live more than 3 years?? there are millions of 15 year old versions of this still running strong where i live. by time your opinion may have changed, but it is definately safe and reliable!
SimHarrison 1 year ago
To all people that disagreed with me. I was talking about Chevy Lumina and Caprice which means the car brands that available in GCC countries,. The climate, streets, and environment of those countries are different from other countries. Lumina and Caprice might be good in Australia and USA but they are definitely can't live more than 3 years in GCC countries. I can show you the differences between these cars in accidents and you can compare them with other cars to see how unsafe they are.
blueblink8040 1 year ago
@blueblink8040

I am definitly importing this car. although i may just get the 2008 lumina SS from Qatar.
elonaman117 2 years ago
@elonaman117 Before you do, look up "HSV VE Club Sport R8." This is the Australian performance version of this model. Essentially take a VE SS and feed it steroids. To make it LHD, you only need to source the parts from a G8, as they're all interchangeable

This car is sold here at the Pontiac G8. Pontiac is going away. There was talk about bringing it here as a Chevrolet Caprice, but that talk recently died. They will not give it to Buick because of the 2010 LaCrosse and Cadillac would not get it because of the CTS.
OLDS98 2 years ago
The sad thing is that GM already has two Chevy versions (obviously the Lumina and Caprice) and a Buick version (Roadmaster sold in China) on sale. I just don't see why they simply cannot rebadge the current G8 as any of these and continue sales of this Holden platform. Granted sales have not been spectacular for the G8, but a lower price point with more parts sharing could lead to a relatively affordable RWD sedan based on this platform - maybe a $24k to $36k price range would be ideal.
rev2987 2 years ago
The Chinese Buick version is called Park Avenue. They do have two Chevrolet versions, but GM said:
1. the whole fuel economy issue
2. The front end would have to be redesigned to meet American impact standards.
3. They said there is not a business case for this car right now because of costs.
4. If it were sold here as a Caprice, the volume would be low, and Chevrolets are not loaded as these cars are, it commands a higher price point.
Getting rid of Pontiac and Oldsmobile solved nothing.
OLDS98 2 years ago
I still hope there is a future for this platform in the U.S.
rev2987 2 years ago
They said it would have to crash test again. That Chevrolet fascia used in the Middle East won't work for the United States. GM is coming out with a series of small Chevys( Volt, Spark, Cruze and another one) and a Buick( based off Opel Astra). They announced yesterday Cadillac finally is getting a new rear drive flagship S Class and 7 Series fighter. You still have a point though. No affordable mid range GM (Oldsmobile /Pontiac like) cars.
OLDS98 2 years ago
@rev2987 The current model VE Holden Commodore (aka Pontiac G8) and WM Caprice (AKA Chevrolet Caprice police cruiser) are both based on the same architecture. The only difference is the rear end styling, and one has a little more legroom than the other. They allso have the Active Fuel Management system, which shuts down cylinders when not needed e.g idling in traffic. In 2011, you will see the kind of police car unseen in America before; one that doesn't slide round corners
Mechknight73 1 year ago
GM had poor leadership. Let people like OLDS98 or myself run the show, and you will see a big difference.

holden just takes chevy body and take all the chevy badges and sell them i mean the VXR8 and the caprice
SuburbanLTZ 2 years ago
on the contrary....

666demonknight666 2 years ago
because ohv designed engines are less expensive to produce and make just as good power especially torque as the high tech versions. i guess from a marketing point of view it would be smart to make dohc engine to bragg about its technology. but being a v8 most want to modify nyway which means alot more $ with adohc. at the end of the day why mess with an engine that is smooth, cheap to run for a v8 and has a lot of potential in the aftermarket. you dont see top fuellers with the double set up
holdenls1ssz 2 years ago
As far as I know the actual American version is made in Australia and shipped to USA.
GM owns holden, however Australian's drive the cars and Australian's build them and Design them for Australian taste and conditions.
Although the original commodore was a copy of the Opel.
Let's just grow some balls lads and enjoy the cars.
mjok2004 2 years ago
@mjok2004 The first Commodore in 1979 started as a "cloned" Opel Rekord. By the time Holden put it into production, they had strengthened, tweaked, overhauled, modified and otherwise restlyed almost every part of it. Testimony to Holden's engineers was that their first motorsport victory was in a rally. Eventually all it had in common with its Opel cousin was the outer skin and a few parts
