The public internet already existed in vestigial form. 1994 was essentially the year it really 'came together' and 'took off'. But it is interesting that today social networks have had a great hand in toppling some the more old world style governments. "New Harmony" is still possible. I think the net has had as much an impact on the first world as the Gutenberg press did, yet it's still an infant.
And we take such things as spices for granted, without giving a thought of how the life would be without these things.
