Um, WHY would Pete PLAY the guitar when he has DAVID GILMORE in his band? Pete plays it as a stage device, he's more comfortable signing with a guitar. (And yes, I LOVE Pete's music)
Thanks for posting. Great tune. Seems to be a little "disconnect" between Pete & everyone else around 1:55, where I believe he swaps lines 3 &4 ("...in your debt" & "...forget") but he covered it pretty well. Part of the fun of live performance.
once i first heard this song off white city, my eyes got big and i looked inside the cd cover, i knew it had to be David Gilmour, he has a certain sound thats obvious to me likewise with Pete Townshend and Eric Clapton and George Harrison
Great video ! Again I see this pretty girl on percussion. I'm sure she's the same woman on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells III. Please,if anyone knows her name????
A quick scan of the comments don't seem to mention that in 1985/1986 while Gilmour was playing in Pete's band, the reason Pete focused on singing and doing acoustic guitar is that hie hearing problems from The Who's barrage were really coming to a head- he has stated numerous times that along with wanting to give Dave the space, and wanting his solo stuff to NOT sound like The Who, he was playing acoustically to heal his poor ears; this continued on the 1989 Who tour (acoustic guitar only).
I'm also big into Floyd but check out Townsends "Mary" or " Heart To Hang Onto" and you'll see how amazing he can be. If he ever looks uncomfortable beside clapton or gilmour he shouldnt cos he just has a different style. A style that Clapton or Gilmour could not cope with and my guess is that they would admit it.
I'll say this much. Townsend is a good guitar strummer. Always knew how to strum. He'd be a decent rhythm guitar player in a good band. But, to be fair, The Who, got away with a "lead guitarist" who is essentially a rhythm player. Need proof? - look at the discomfort Townsend exhibits on his guitar next to Clapton in a video you'll easily find here on YouTube. Trust me, you'll feel uncomfortable, and there's not doubt Clapton is thinking to himself, "This is a famous guitar player?"
@Rabidsenses , Yes, Pete is that he is not a "lead" player, in the sense of a soloist. I would call him a lead-rhythm player. He plays some of the most amazing lead-rhythm rhythm fills!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I feel so uncomfortable watching this vastly overrated "musician."
Now David Gilmour, there's a musician . . . though why he would hang out with someone of Townsend's pathetic ilk is beyond me. Thankfully that working relationship appears to be over. I mean, if Gilmour wants to have a beer with Townsend that's fine. But for Gilmour to presume to play guitar with a man who is so god damn overrated as a guitar player was always a little hard to watch. And Townsend's lyrics? . . . ouch!!!!
Well....controversial but I'm all for people expressing their own opinions! Who am I to disagree?
To be honest I am very surprised that this has been the highest rated video I've uploaded to YT and I never thought it would be so popular when I recorded it 25 years ago. I recorded it for the Gilmour content not the Townshend!
Oh well, each to their own! I was always a Floyd fan and never particularly into The Who, so I'm sort of with you on that!
@nickhirst999 I recorded this 25 (26) years ago too. But chiefly for the Simon Phillips content. It's a great song and a great performance. I'm very glad I got to see Deep End in concert at Brixton, and The Who in 89.
I respect your opinion, but Pete Townshend is the most underated rock guitar player in history. The reason he "backed down" to Dave Gilmour on this album is that Pete is a fan of Dave's and Pete's guitar plugged in would have blown the "spacy" style of Gilmour off the stage. Pete is about chords, volume and aggression.
@roberhau I cannot think of a moment in Pete's history where his guitar work would have "blown [away] the spacey style of Gilmour off the stage." This is David Gilmour whose own rich and comprehensive canon of guitar work includes everything from soundscapes (DSOTM, WYWH) to chord progressive melodies and leads (Animals, The Wall) . Gilmour is an example of epic musicianship and this is seen when he also produces. Gilmour appreciates Townsend's frontman style, but not his playing over his own.
Holy Shit, lighten up please. Both are great musicians, different styles. Townshend influenced everyone fro Hendrix to The Edge. Gilmour is great - I just don't think he impacted rock music the way Townhend has.
@Rabidsenses Learn something which I learned in kindergarten, my friend, to respect everyone's opinion in this world. Why don't you take your bullshit to kindergarten and get re-educated? Looks like your parents wasted all their money on some worthless piece of shit like you.
@rajbeast ha ha ha . . . Yes, I'll remember to get an education someday. Those first degrees . . . oh, nevermind. Anyway, to have a different opinion than others DOES NOT mean I am showing disrespect, you nincompoop. Don't be a cerebral louse, for your all the efforts you are making on behalf of "respect" fell like by the wayside as soon as you started attacking me personally. I have not presumed to attack anyone whatsoever. I simply have an opinion that you are attempting to censor.
Ha! Yep, I thought your original point may prove to be controversial, Rabidsenses, and indeed it has but I like a bit of controversy on my channel! I like to call it healthy debate and I approve wholeheartedly of your putting your point forward and I don't think you should be attacked for doing so!
Let the debate continue. I certainly won't be blocking anyone for having a point of view! In fact I'll contribute soon!
@nickhirst999 My thought is that thumbing that comment down is showing an opinion. It's kind of depressing, but some of the people who listen to this style of music are kind of close-minded. You know the type: "This is real music, all else is useless." The kind who think that anyone who doesn't listen to their music is an idiot. I disagree with the dude you're talking to, personally. I think Townshend's a very strong lyricist and a pretty good guitarist. But the other guy's no idiot.
@Rabidsenses I think that they each had their own strong impact on music. The Who kind of opened the door for art and progressive rock, and in a way revolutionized the idea of a concept album. Pink Floyd took the ideas of concept albums and pushed them even farther forward. They both have had very powerful legacies and have changed rock music for the better. That's why their both in my top 4 favorite bands. That, and their both awesome.
Hi! As you know, I didn't affect your comment in any way! But I DID like it! I appreciated your honesty and since this is the highest viewed vid on my channel, I wanted to come back to review it. I think PT and DG are very difficult to compare.

Its all about Simon Phillips on this one ! I originally saw & fell in luv with his playing in 1985 from this song. I played it, and played to it many times. Lost the video and been searching for it many years now.
Dead right there. Philips is an absolute monster on this track. I love this song to death, but I could listen to the drum track alone for hours. It's absolute gold.
Bsides gillmore and townsand how about the drummer simon phillips he is really incredible and the addition of the horns is genious soo much fuller than the studio but hey great musicians sound better live. any band who is good in the studio and suck live should give the credit to the producer and recording engineers
This is one of those all time GREAT songs that pops into my head in the morning as I'm trying to get moving. When I saw this version with DGilmour, I had to check it out, and was not let down. Awesome.
@instantbrother Simon dropped the Octobans from his kit when he started using the cordia Artstar in 83. When he starting using them again regularly in 88 he was only using the four low pitch ones. I've always considered them to be part of his unique sound though, along with the Gong bass and the 24" Swish Knocker.
Yeah! This vid has had more hits than any other I've posted yet only two comments! Thanks Brrrrr43 for getting the ball rolling. More comments please, people!
Thank you for posting, this is one of my favorites by Pete. Question, is Pete's Acoustic plugged in, I'm not seeing a chord. Can the microphone pick up vocals and the acoustic guitar, or did they have wireless technology at that time?
They did have wireless at the time as Gilmour was using one. I've often wondered why Pete's holding his guitar up to the mic but until recently I'd never heard the original and didn't realise there was supposed to be an acoustic part at the beginning. I can only assume that his acoustic didn't have a built in pickup and they decided just to have it acoustically and the vocal mic didn't pick it up sufficiently. Odd!
