I tried this today before watching the video, but I did it wrong. My arm wasn't all the way over/the inside of my elbow wasn't up to his windpipe, so I was practically choking him with my wrist.

@PrinceOfPersia1996 Not trying to be funny, it's just that it sounds a little gay to say "rear NAKED choke" ... like "rear nude choke"... or "rear pantiless choke"... since the choke in question is a take on the neck and it happens from the rear, it seemed to me more apropriate to refer to it as "rear neck choke". But maybe I am wrong and this choke is all about the "rear" and being naked... hummm. Moisturizer, anyone?

@leonzioooo Gymnasium, a Greco-Roman invention, literally means "to exercise in the nude" because the Greeks and Romans were obviously badasses. Greco-Roman wrestling, one of the most ancient sports devised - along with running and the likes - also (obviously from the name) a Greco-Roman invented - sport. Not sure if this is where the rear naked choke originated, but if it was (which I wouldn't be surprised at, at all) you can see how it may have gotten it's name.

In any case, we are dedicating to much energy to something so unimportant, to continue with this. "Naked" or "Neck" this choke is still a badass choke.

@PrinceOfPersia1996 I was always under the impression that the "naked" part is to do with the fact that you're not hooking an arm (like in a single wing choke), and it's naked as in it's just your arms and their neck. Nothing to do with the clothes worn.

From the experience I do have, however, it's unwise to take technique names too literally. For example, a kata called "Storming the Fortress" is not a kata showing how to invade a secure compound. The "fortress" is the human body.

The problem with the RNC as used in most UFC fights is that it's used as a throat crush instead of a blood choke. Watch carefully the next time, and you'll see where the crook of the elbow is. More often than not, it's way off to one side, indicating a throat crush and air choke.
