I think this method CAN work perfectly, but only if ALL factors that lead to this situation work perfectly. For ex. they had to get the guy without the terrorists noticing that he is gone. Plus, what if they (in this particular moment) could not reach his mother. Plus, i doubt there would be a proper signal coverage in the desert. But overall, if details are taken care of- its all up to human psychology. They identified the feeling of guilt in him which bothers him- and they offer solution!
