@Sharkie626 We scrapped it out a couple years ago. It was too rusted underneath to be worth fixing. I was keeping the motor for a spare, but will probably scrap that soon as well. The shaft is rusted to the point it's half gone, and the pump can't seal on it anymore.
@gellobeer - Check the agitator bolt and the rubber washer under it. This one was loose, and that may have been why it was leaking. I did not check it after finding that though
@Maxxarcade I figured out where the water was leaking from. It was the water pump. There was a tiny hole in the plastic case. It was very simple and easy to replace, but the only down fall of it was that it cost $52 dollars to replace.
@gellobeer Yep, same problem with this machine, only it was the pump seal by the motor. I decided to part it out rather than fix it, because it was too rusted.
You would be right about the motor reversing to run the drain pump. When it goes forward, it agitates, and also pre-shifts the motor for the later neutral drain. When it first stops and reverses, the transmission shifts to neutral drain. When the motor stops and starts again in the same direction (reverse), it shifts to the spin mode.
Ah...that explains why if the lid is opened during drain, it goes to spin when the lid is closed. I'd like to see the internal operation of a washer transmission some time.
Wish I could help but sadly I don't have access to one of these and just recently became a washer enthusiast of the gawker (no machines except my normal one) variety thank to these vids. I had a Kenmore of this vintage as a kid, thanks for the memories.
Hey Maxxarcade, is this washer still working today?

@Maxxarcade aww, that's too bad, a least it gave ya years of good service.

@Sharkie626 Yep, and the old Whirlpool we have now uses the same parts. It's a reliable washer for how much it gets used.

@Maxxarcade oh, good choice to have! We have one from 1990, still working perfect today.

That's a very quiet motor! Not bad for the year it was manufactured!

At my house my parents still use a Whirlpool washer and dryer from around 1990. They still work even. :-)
Cheers!

If I remember right, the motor reverses to run the drain pump. Does it run, but not drain?
I've seen repair videos on Youtube, maybe you'll find one that helps.

This video reminds me that I need to fix my own washer. For some reason it won't drain. I'm assuming it's the pump.

Was that a high-speed spin cycle (i.e. normal cycle spin)?
vanni9283 3 years ago
This only has one speed on the spin cycle I think. Though my Whirlpool is two speed.
