I don't understand people counting ounces. Are you all nutrient starved and from a 3rd world country? My pack weighs about 40 lbs, my vest is another 40 and my weapons add another 10, throw in the steel toes and K pot and dozens of Crystal Lites I carry to barter with... jeese. I remember when peoplecamped and hiked for fun, until the yuppies came along and ruined everything.
@l0keman Maybe because some of us do not always walk around with a 3 pound gun, steel toe boots and a 40 pound backpack. Maybe some of us, when not out there doing those things, are out hiking for 2500-3000 miles at a time, where an unnecessary ounce carried for 3000 miles starts to add up. Try not to be so narrowly focused in life - there are a million different things that people do to enjoy themselves, not everything has to fit one specific hobby or life style. Thanks.
If you're nitpicking about an ounce, go lose an ounce of bodyfat. Yes, the weight adds up for UL backpackers, but seriously.... unless you're racing or doing hundreds of miles, and you're already super-fit and lean, an ounce is NOTHING.
Are you serious??? Why do you care about a few ounces? 1 freaking ounce! Not even a pound and you take it off??? Wow!! And i mean no disrespect by what im saying by the way I like your vids:)
@HDCYTFAN Understandable questions. Maybe perhaps some hikers care a lot about their backpack weight. Maybe because some backpackers figure that they can multi-use things to get rid of unnecessary things. If you are hiking a long hike like the PCT/AT/CTD you could be hiking for 2000+ miles. Why carry an extra ounce for 2000+ miles if you do not have too.
Haha . Duude I watched this sober and thought you were grilling........ Then I started grilling and realized you know quite a bit about yourself and surroundings ... a+ brother!!!
First, love the mini rant on water temps. I've always wondered why people were really worrying about it. It's not like we can really change the temps in the middle of nowhere.
Second, thanks for putting something up about this system. I've been going back and forth over which cold weather system I wanted to go with and this at least gives me some solid info!
@ULBorBust ah yes, my mini rant on water temps... brings back memories. giggle.
This being the first Jetboil with a regulator in it, it is thus able to be the first 'cold weather' Jetboil in my personal opinion. I have used it in the snow, but it was only at 3000 feet and the outside temperature was around 37(f). So, far from truly an ideal condition to test the worthiness of the Jetboil for true cold weather usage.
@RedwoodOutdoors Well they say it's performance is good to 20 deg F, but I'm really just looking for a solo kit that can fill in the gaps my tealight alcohol stove leaves at lower temps. I originally looked at the Jetboils before but couldn't justify not only the weight but the fact that the pot is huge and even the smaller .8L version is more than I need. But at this weight, why not?
nice follow up. Could they be using non stick teflon to coat the titanium? that could be what the black goo is. It could be melting off due to the high temperature? I wouldnt want to be ingesting that. Regarding the "handle", I talked with jetboil. They told me its not a handle. I wished them good luck in convincing a jury as everyone I know would see it as such and treat it as a handle.I brought it up because I felt it could scold a person if it slipped off. They said its just a cosy.
@hobofu Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and for posting a comment! Hope to have you subscribe to my channel. The pot does not seem to be teflon coated. My main guess is that something is causing the stove to get dirty and the water is causing the 'goo'. As for the handle, well, yeah, as you said, good luck on Jetboils part convincing us that the "handle" is not actually a... well... handle. So, the cosy has a cosy that looks like a handle huh. lol
@RedwoodOutdoors sorry mate I havent subscribed because im only really looking at the jetboil & like you say your the only one posting anything of value :)
Regarding the size of the cup and it boiling over- is that still a problem if you use the jetboil lid? I re-watched part of your video to see if you said but didnt appear you did, but Ive only re-watched the part about the gooey black stuff. Also do you think it could be better if the cup was titanium & 1lt size like the old jetboil? thanks
@hobofu The Jetboil lid does not prevent boil overs, nor would a larger size. Turning it off in time is the only thing that prevents boil-overs - D'Oh! Do not base your decision to not buy this product simply because of this one issue. I am simply use to having to wait longer, and that is something new to my camp procedure. Eventually I will get my brain to remember to tell me I cannot leave a Jetboil alone for 6-8 minutes while I am off setting up my tarp/net/whatever, and than, problem solved.
@RedwoodOutdoors oh I thought you were saying the cup was too small & that is why it boiled over, that & you using a foil lid. Thanks for clearing it up.
Im not put off buying it by the boil over but still waiting on my question about can it be used over an open flame or fire without damage. jetboil are not answering. Im beginning to think its not the product for me but will give them more time to get back with an answer. Hope you find out what the black goo is.
