  • Awesome bassist

  • what about tempo?

    what about notes?

seems like this composition exists on its own and is playing the instruments and the musicians!

  • In the album version, Mike Oldfield plays all instruments himself.

  • Bassie en Adriaan! :)

  • 5:11 Oh yeah that's what i call a junkie. Haha excuse me

  • How old was he here? He looks like a kid!

  • L's theme is very similar, very probably influenced by this great music :)

  • Волшебно. Эта мелодия может заставить прыгнуть с крыши или совершить геройский поступок.

  • Can you see the way Mike just plays the audience. Christ he is a freak. What a genius.

  • Mike was probably happy those dudes ripped off his music for the Exorcist. Probably made him more famous in the U.S. than he ever would have been. They don't know about decent music over there. Can you believe he was only 19 when he made that album? It's simply amazing.

  • What speed is this played on the record 33 or 45

  • @acdchiway2hell It's a computer, it's played at the speed of your processor:)

  • i like to hear being sure that there is not gonna be an annoying scream at the middle of it

  • un plagiat...Thème composé par Christian Vander de MAGMA.

  • This is inhumanly sick precision playing.............I don't know who is Mike there, guess he is on bass, isn't he?..............

  • @duncpol i think mike is the guy on the guitar- in the beginning, the red one...

still, that guy on the bass is great!!

  • @duncpol Mike Oldfield is on guitar, playing the Gibson SG.

  • Great electronic music with nice guitar!

  • Moris Pert R.I.P., he's like animal from the muppets! What a legend!

  • the exorcist is a scary movie.

  • LOVE!

  • the dont make music like this anymore

  • for 1973 yes.for 2011 so-so.

  • epic bass plaer

  • Mike is (and always be) a genie.

  • Its a shame they used this song as The Exorcist theme

William Friedkin diminished this melody's overall positivive value

  • increible <3

  • This has bugged me for ages. Anyone know why that sudden skip happens at 8:28? It's on the DVD as well, nothing to do with this video.

  • @mortuus47 is it an edit maybe???

  • 5:12 - 5:40 is Maggie Reilly.

  • English do it better...

  • i think its absolutely amazing how people create music from this perspective and then its recreated for an fan base that is there to listen even though its ideally no more than an score.

  • Oldfield is a stunning artist, often overlooked in the states since '73, but this piece is still one of the landmark 70's pieces of PROG !!!

  • Dat bass solo! We need more music with bass solo's.

  • my favorite ring tone

  • 39 people were possessed by Pazuzu

  • lol 1:24 he looks like a monkey lol

  • lol 1:24 he looks like a monkey lol

  • WOW!

    Fantastic!

    I wish I was there....

At the end of all Turin is not that far from Montreux... but I was only nine at that time...

  • and everything because there was a horrorfilm...=)

    I LOVE IT!!! WONDERFULL!!!

  • Maravilhoso!

    Beto Tull

  • BRUTAL!!!!!

  • when music was made by hands using instruments and not computers !

  • @SonGoku87 music is made by humans

  • ..... synthesizer are a computer.

  • @SonGoku87 warning, I am going to rant. If you knew the first thing about producing music on a computer, you would know that 90% of the time, the person is playing a keyboard MIDI interface, or using an MPC for drum pads, or using outboard synthesizers to write the music. Mixing inside the computer is done via an electronic version of a studio mixer. My point is, people still make the music with their bare hands just like these talented individuals on the screen. /rant

  • At 4,39 he wished he had a violin instead

  • he's doing precisely what Mozart did, every instrument is telling the same story for a different perspective.

  • This is a good description of someone who's:

    a.) a little insane

    b.) on drugs

    c.) both

  • Man, i've just watched Jean Michel Jarre playing Magnetic Fields from the Docklands on another channel and it looks like Billy Connolly is on stage with him. Thought i'd check out some classic Mike Oldfield and i find that Leo Sayer is up there with him playing some bongos. What is the world coming to?? ;o)

  • It seems every performance of "Tubular Bells" is different from the ones before it. And invariably, they are all excellent.

  • This is music magic!

  • The Exorcist's Theme Song <3

  • I didn't know commander Riker played the bass like a boss

  • @Gerbilpowah

    lol

  • 39 Justin Beiber fans saw this video

  • @PrimericanIdol Did that little fag really have to get a mention on this beautiful video?

  • Can't stop listening to this song

  • Fantastique! Thanks for posting!

  • 1981 ... times of young pioneers, experimentation, composition ! Jarre, Oldfield, Vangelis, Kitaro ... even the Genesis, why not! A lot of good music.

  • buena musica!!!!

  • @cuaxico87 para vidoes de terror o videos xD.

  • un génie de la musique

  • When was this written ?

  • SUPERB!

  • the dude at 1:24 looks kinda freaky, like, some sort of creature or something

  • check this version

    /watch?v=1_uWbNw1IpQ&feature=related

  • Am I the only one who thinks Mike Oldfield looks like Richard Dawkins in his late 20's ?

  • @sdohmi i dont know who that is or what he looks like, but thats funny! haha

  • doesn't mike use veneers on his fingernails for finger picking?

  • @patback66 long nails

  • I find it really cool that the bassist is using a pick (which I don't normally condone), and Oldfield appears to be using even his pinky to pluck at times. Watching his right hand is so strange.

  • Mano, que foda!

  • 4:00 til 4:50 = <3

  • This mans a genius- I've liked him since I was 14! Here I am 34 soon and still top of my life of hundreds of guitarists!!!

  • 39 peaple dislike... Fake?

  • @kikif11 compared to over a 1,000 likes probably not. not a bad like/dislike ratio :-p

  • Probably stupid Lady Gaga's fans!We live in the "Gaga's music

dictatorship" and we hear all day stupid songs in the streets, the cafes,

    the stores, everywhere!

  • Alternating measures of 7 and 8 bars. Very tricky.

  • Merci à celui qui a posté cette vidéo une qualité d'image et sonore irréprochable pour l'époque....

Mike est toujours aussi "vibrant".... Merci à lui d'exister

  • @PATATTRAC Actually it's 3 bars in 7/8 then 1 bar in 9/8 and that repeats the whole time

  • IT IS A VERY VERY GREAT AND BEAUTIFUL SONG. THIS VERSION IS AWESOME!

  • one of my all time favorites! Mike is great!

  • This is the best version of Tubular Bells 1 to me. I love the way he uses that theme from Taurus 2 (Five Miles Out) at 2:43 GENIUS!!

  • I love this song, were using it as part of our marching band show !!

  • @alevans51 Yeah, all of the historians and theater & music experts throuhg the decades were all wrong because they forgot to check with an Internet loser for her opinion. I wonder what it's like to have no life at all and simply go aroudn YouTube looking for obvious highly acclaimed pieces and just say the same thing over and over against them? Does it get you the attention your mommy never gave you?

    LMFAO, friggin' loser.

  • @alevans51 Oh my God, model trains? 59 years old and........MODEL TRAINS?????? Wow, even I am amazed at the depth of your patheticness. BWA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • @alevans51 this song wasnt made for the movie.

  • Ein Meisterwerk, einzigartig und unglaublich.

  • @DerDrache707071 Wie recht du hast. ;) Aber ich finde, Taurus 2 auf der Five Miles Out ist noch besser...

  • question... who's the redhead singing soprano at 5 and a half minutes in?? she has an AWESOME voice!!

  • @blozier2006

    The "Redhead" is Maggie Reilly

  • I will never forget Mike Oldfield in Denmark 1982, That was the best concert i ever had seen and ever have seen!!!!

  • At 6.43 there's the drummer from Muppet Show !!!

  • All I can say... Genius nothing that describes this guy. And the talent he has with the guitarr... jesus give me thoose please!

  • Excellent!

  • It's nice to see with which concentration Mike Oldfield plays the guitar. He is so enthralled in his music that nothing seems to exist around him. Just a "Glenn Gould" of the guitar!

  • Amazing and will always be remembered as an outstanding artist.

  • Can you imagine if Mike was in a Metal band! He would blow all these so called guitarist away!

  • was at there - never gonna forget!!! thanks for share!!!

  • Chuck Norris on bass, Luke Skywalker on keyboards, Brian May on percussions... can't get any better !

Seriously though, the backing musicians are really good, but Mike is a god.

  • does someone has the tabs for the solo at 6:10 ?

    thanks

  • mindblowing...

  • Mike seems dying from nerves with the guitar.

I'm pretty shure that it isn't only vibrato.

And also, he has caricaturally long nails in his right hand '^^

  • @yngward i read his autobiography. apparently, he was shitting himself a lot of the time. his mum was mental, literally. then he started smoking lots of green and tried some acid and developed the 'mentalism' disease himself. this is the result

  • @lexichronicle2 whats mentalism????

  • @mugwamp4 schizophrenia I guess, I can't remember if he mentioned the specific problem he or his mum had. his mum was routinely being taken to hospital though, and taking drugs for something

  • Timeless masterpiece

  • geniuses!! awesomeness!!!!!

  • 39 people disliked it...wtf?

  • This was chuck norris's lullaby as a baby

  • Amazing song. Wasn't he like autistic or something????

  • He looks like he is crying.. but this music is pure awesomenes :D ;)

    Mike Oldfield FTW ^^

  • i like that Chuck Norris plays on the base

  • Very, very special - soooo good!

  • Gods, the keyboard player with the keyboard print shirt was so damned kawaii! Ah, youth is so damned fleeting and ephemeral... like the sakura blossoms, sigh.

  • also

  • mint

  • Tubular bells... Watch this and realise that it doesn't get much bettter...

  • reminds me of deathnote.

  • @FadingxXxNinja why?

  • Comment removed

  • @alexander00p2 cause it sounds like parts from the show

  • DIOS BENDIJO A ESTE HOMBRE...

  • Umm....You're going to have to excuse me for looking like a noob, but....which one is Mike Oldfield...?

  • @Desh681 :) It's not a nooby question, Mike Oldfield is the guy in the pink shirt with yellow stripes. He's playing the keyboard at the start then plays the lead guitar at the front of the stage. Hope this helps :)

  • @winters0123 ah right. Thx man.

  • @Desh681

Better to ask and maybe make fool of yourself once, than don't ask and stay foolish :) He is the one playing on the leading guitar.

  • @zolniu O.O Lol nice, too true. And thanx.

  • AWSOME

  • this is great.

  • who can match this? half of you fellows wher not jet born when I already enjoy this master piece!

  • Amazing!!!

  • i fuckin love this song <3, this song was perfect for the exorcist film<3

  • ein geniales lied !!!wunderschön !!!einen lieben gruß an einen guten freund !!!

    HALLY !!!

    nima <3

  • that guitar sings brilliant...

  • now thats what a real musician can do;singing pop dont make u a musician theres a huge difference mmm class/genius springs 2 mind.

  • Of course I ment that he was 19 when he wrote the song. This is in 1981 and the record was released in 1973.

  • Kungen940127: He couldn't have been 19 years of age 1981 since he made a recording in 1973 and he didjn't look like 1 year old then! He's born 1953 so that will make him 28 years old 1981.

  • I think you will find that they are saying he was 19 when he wrote this, not when he was performing it at Montreux.

  • He was 19....... what a genious!!!!!

  • can you imagine he wasn't even 20 when he wrote this..

  • The guy on keyboards with the goofy grin, looks like the Procal Harem Keyboard player, is it him?

  • @oldfart4751

No, that's Tim Cross. I spent a lot of time with him in England recently and got to know him a bit. I personally love his grin/smile - it's very big and expressive and infectious.

  • @macgyver1macgyver That jumper of his in this is still terrible in 2010 and beyond! And yeah, what a smile!

  • @bigfra79 Sorry to hear that mate, RIP to your father

  • @bigfra79 I love this piece of music as well! I think it is awsome that you dedicate it to someone near and dear! May your dad rest in piece! What a wondeful way to remember him! :-)

  • DIEEEEE @bigfra79

  • There's a DVD of this concert released in 2006 entitled "Mike Oldfield - Live at Montreux 1981" I'm sure you can find it on the web. It features Maggie Reilly who you see vocalizing on this video.

The Guitarist playing the red SG is Mike Oldfield himself, not Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones. Brian died twelve years prior to this concert.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the Producers of the film "The Exorcist " used "Tubular Bells" for the theme with out consent. I could be mistaken though.

  • If I'm not mistaken, Mike Oldfield was a complete wreck from nerves just before the concert, and Richard Branson convinced him to do it for a nice car.

  • anyone know where can i find this version?

  • is this the first time this was performed? cos if it is, thats the rolling stones guitarist (then guitarist) playing the SG.

  • keyboard player could play Nosferatu without makeup

    outstanding performance

  • Tubular Bells was the sound track to the Exorcist and Sir Richard and Mike have been mates for eons as one other said they are about the same age. Mike's original record lable was Chrysalis and they both had a hand in the creation of Virgin Records.

  • marvelous and extremely powerful

  • @larrarri you are right!!

  • when Oldfield was 19 years old, Branson was at about the same age.......

  • wow, the guitar sounds awesome

  • Richard Branson made his first £1million from this record. Cunning...

  • Absolutely! What an incredible testament to the power of music and the arts in general.

Sir Richard gave this 19 yr old music
