The legislation that establishes the ONDCP and describes the director's role actually lists opposing legalization of any drugs as one of his responsibilities. Technically, Mr. Kerlikowske is required by law to oppose legalization.
Does that make it right? Hell no. Is he lying through his teeth and spinning everything he says? Yes, but it's the job we're paying him to do.
I would be willing to bet the numbers would show that Marijuana profits are far higher than anything earned from extortion, arson, and human trafficking COMBINED... Think about the difference in size of customer base alone.
"I don't think [marijuana legalization] would have a large effect on [the drug war]." If that's so then why do you point to marijuana as being a huge cause of the drug war. (notice there's no ? at the end of that rhetorical question.)
@Robstailey Actually, "weed" doesn't cure cancer. The oil extracted from cannabis DOES, however. Google "Cannabis cures cancer" or "Phoenix Tears" for more information.
Read Jack Herer's book "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" to learn how and WHY cannabis/hemp prohibition began as a racist make-work project for government employees after alcohol prohibition was repealed.
I recal an article about testing in a nationally recognized laboratory funded by the DEA. Their intent was to prove that marijuana causes lung cancer. Well when they released the results (on like page 5 in the newspaper) it turned out that it prevented cancer even in folks who were light cigarette smokers. I know THC is also an expectorant and thus help clear lungs. Big business from oil to pharmacuticals fight the legalization for obvious reasons... money !
What a wonderful gesture! What a terrible shame it was pretty much ruined by incompetent presentation! This Danny character really needs to either: a) find a coach to help him work on his presentation skills, or b) get someone else to do it! Otherwise, more such wonderful opportunities may be likewise squandered.
@MkkDdd Yeah... that guy had no business speaking in public to represent this cause. I think he did more harm than good... seems that his lack of presentation skills would lead many to believe marijuana causes brain damage.
Don't forget, one of Obama's many undelivered promises was to stop the DEA raids on dispenseries and to re-examine the status quo vis-a-vis cannabis legalization.
He failed to carry through all of his other promises, why should he care about this one. I can't stand this jackbooted thug mentality. When I go to my physician, I always see attractive young "legal dealers" giving out free samples and other schwag on behalf of the pharmaceutical cos.BAHyour life.
Gil Kerlikowske is lying through his teeth and he knows it for the reasons stated by @dsessom. I cannot believe how much hypocrisy surrounds this simple, logical question. Are we better off with the status quo, or has time come to try another route?
Think, the resident of the "Land of the Free", what would you prefer? Why must you choose alcohol, an extremely toxic substance on which one CAN OD, or smoking a non-toxic, non-overdosable joint? And what about those of us who use it medicinally
i don't think taking that small amount from them will do anything.
really?
you take the SOLID 20,000 who get it from other countries and from "cartels" without even knowing it. you cut off all their money. you take it. the "cartels" no longer do. that's still a shit load of money. whether it's only 1/30th their yearly income, they'll lose it all sooner or later. its the pot that got them that money.
I bet if we fire up a few tons of good bud upwind of DC we'd convert the majority... as long as we gave 'em something good to drink and some munchies afterward.
The position of "Dope Pope"has always been that of a political General of armed forces. Every one of 'e spewed the same "Reefer Madness" crap. Hundreds of people are killed everyday by the drugs alcohol and nicotine and all we get in return is lip service because money talks and there's big money in drugs of all kinds. The AMA is the largest and most powerful drug pusher in the world. I believ that pharacutical companies take an average 2,500% profit from their product. LEGALIZE MARIJUANA NOW !
No don't approach him lol, people are hilarious. At least the Czar was kind enough to take the petition although his position is amazingly ridiculous as all of the drug czars have been in the past.
@DaeOh It's outdated at 60% in 1997. But the person said 70% which is in today's terms. What Kerlikowske did was change the scope of the question, then responded to that new question.
In 1997, the crack/cocaine epidemic was still in effect in a major way although tapered off from the 80s when it was in full swing. So it makes sense that the percent of income went UP today from 1997.
The reason he gets away with not answering is b/c no one wants to seem catty and it's not a debate!
@DaeOh No no no. That was nothing more than a Q&A session. If it were a real debate, it would be more like what we saw during the pres. election.. one side vs the other side.. this is was more of a panel where citizens could comment or ask questions, a forum, not a back and forth like a real debate.
In truth, the DEA, in its entire history has NEVER agreed to debate anything. The reason is their concern is enforcing the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, nothing to debate.
@mrcohen um whatever benefit you are referring to is more than likely to be completely overwhelmed by the benefit the govt. would have from getting taxes on marijuana. add to that the money they would save from not fighting the 'war on pot' and your argument is useless.
one reason it won't become legal is that as a black market item, it's illegality acts as a price support, which grows the "true" economy: ie ALL economic activity, licit and illict. So another reason the gov't benefits fro making a highly desirable item illegal.
The reason Gil Kerlikowske denies that legalization is a viable option is because marijuana comprises nearly 70% of their busts and prosecutions. This would translate to a 70% decline in their business - meaning many of his staff would be out of a job. It's pretty simple. Gil Kerlikowske is a self serving, closed minded piece of garbage that is responsible for thousands of deaths because he is leading the "War on Drugs" which results in all the violence we see in Mexico and in our own cities.
Thanks! I am a public speaker for LEAP, and former Corrections Officer and Deputy Sheriff in Oklahoma. If the public could see the amount of property destroyed or taken from citizens in raids during raids, and the shooting of pets, etc. I think public opinion would change drastically on marijuana possession. I've seen a 70 year old woman thrown on the floor, her dog shot, and her house taken by the city because she grew a few plants in her home. No joke. How is this freedom?
@dsessom It is NOT FREEDOM! Thats the point. Just because something IS LEGAL does NOT make it MORALLY right - and - Just because something is ILLEGAL does NOT make it MORALLY WRONG!
@dsessom i agree, i hope that he loses someone close to him by a member of the drug cartel to show what could have been lowered or put out of business by a simple legalization
@FrenchConcrete Obama, Gil and ALL these evil Motherfukers can suck my fucking dick that cunt probably threw the signatures in the trash after he was handed them

@toreropalido Pero senor, yo hablo los dos Inglés e Español. I also would brush up on my spanish and deliver my concerns eloquently and with confidence if I wanted to be taken seriously. @IndieBudgetMovie He wouldn't get respect from the "Dope Czar" if he spoke 10 languages + latin. He wouldn't get respect from the "Dope Czar" if you paid him to give it. @IndieBudgetMovie Agreed, he stumbled and sounded unsure of himself or his facts. Image is EVERYTHING. Get someone who can speak well and stand their ground.
We need new politicians. Personal freedom--along with healthier alternatives like marijuana--are constantly bastardized and kept from common sense legislation. Any country that makes it a crime for a person to put into their bodies an ancient plant that people have used for so long--medically and spiritually--is NOT a free country. Oh and the Constitution? WHAT Constitution?
@Akaoushi I think you heard a few too many scare tactics. Listen to what your saying, if marijuana was legal people wouldn't need to get it from black market sources that might tamper with it.
@Akaoushi Marijuana is a plant, you dipshit. No one has died from using it. Prohibition is the root cause of violence and loss of liberty. I think you'd fit in quite well with the DEA.
hmmm American czar gets handed 52000 American signatures and he turns the focus on other countries, must have been Daniel's accent. thank you for completing the hand off in public view and documented by video, Mr Pachenco. Excellent job seizing the opportunity at the end of the video!
