Can't belive you predicted "Fantastic Mr. Fox" was gonna win best animated feature over "Up"...I mean that was kinda obvious (Up the winner of course)
everyone thinks up, but im not convinced, especially since pixar made a MASTERPIECE last year with wall-e that got shafted. up in no way compares in my mind. the messenger, sure, but outside of woody harrelson no one has heard of it. its too small.
With TEN open spots, Nine WILL be nominated for best picture. Maybe not director, but best picture indeed. The academy isnt composed of movie critics. Its people in the business. The movie overall, was boring, but the acting, costumes, makeup etc. made it worthwhile.
Meryl Streep winning? Keep dreaming, the woman who won for Sophie's Choice is not going to get a third Oscar for that light fluff of a movie, it would go to Bullock before it goes to Streep.
Not really, it was an overacted, cartoonish portrayal of what could've been a great performance, nothing compared to last year's "Doubt" and certainly not the kind of movie that should get any actor a third Oscar, we're talking Meryl Streep here, not Diane Keaton.
ps - of course it may not compare to doubt, but last year everyone thought kate winslet was way overdue. meryl didnt stand a chance. this year she is up again several virtually unknown actresses, a recent winner, and sandra bullock, whose nomination will be her reward. plus, im sure many voters will feel obligated to give meryl an oscar after denying her one last year
Doing much more and it would be the equivalent of the Dan Aykroyd SNL segment that they showed on the film.
If the fact that there are several unknown actresses in the lineup is going to play into it, then Bullock will win by far, like I said, this film is not even up to Streep's standards, it would be insulting if this is the performance that gets her a third Oscar.
Dont be too quick to rule out Bullock. How do you think Julia Roberts won for Erin Brockovich? or Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line? Shes one of Americas Sweethearts. Though Im actually rooting for Meryl, I think Sandra might actually win.
julia roberts already had 2 previous oscar nominations before 'brockovich.' i dont know how reese whitherspoon fits into this whole picture - but she won SEVERAL critics awards prior to the oscar. bullock has not. sandra will have to be happy and settle with her nomination
Fair enough, but Marcia Gay Harden was nominated for virtually NO awards prior to her winning the oscar. So I dont think minor/major critics choice awards determine who the winner is. And having previous oscar nominations doesnt seal the deal either. Albert Finney, Glenn Close, Joan Allen, etc. all have multiple nominations: but no win as of yet.
Reese fits because she was another mainly comedic/rom-com type of actress who stepped out of her comfort zone, did a drama and immediately won the Oscar.
Critics awards are only relevant to narrowing down the nominees, for the actual award, they don't hold much weight, GG, SAG and BAFTA do.
I'm not sure how I feel about Kathryn Bigelow winning for "The Hurt Locker," but otherwise spot on!! Good job coming up with a decent list... considering the options...
ps some of the comments on this are hilarious. People are FREAKING out that you picked Inglourious Basterds! WHY?! It has at LEAST as good of a chance as ANYTHING else - this year is horrible and it was one of the few good movies. MINIMUM a nomination, no question.
i completely agree - even about best director. right now she seems like the one to beat, but i have seen much beter DIRECTED movies this year... we'll see.
thank you about inglourious basterds!! omg of COURSE it has just as much chance as anything else - it was definitely one of the best received and praised movies in this dump of a year, thats for sure
@IbanezMS1995 What's wrong with Coraline? You obviously know nothing about the amount of artistry went into Coraline, otherwise, you wouldn't be so blind to the fact that it will definitely win.
Honestly, what makes Fantastic Mr. Fox so much god-damned better? That it has George Clooney in it?
are you really serious right now? i cant believe you think so much LESS work and talent went into "mr fox" than coraline. sure coraline is much more visually beautiful, but fantastic mr fox is equally as stunning if you understand what that means.
do you realize what you just said? you listed 5 movies that "could" win when I only said the one I hoped would win. OBVIOUSLY if you give me a list of like 10 movies one of them will probably win. these are just MY predictions you ass.
ps - preciou, invictus, and nine are NEVER going to win - EVER.
@artmania1990 , i respect your opinion as i wish that you respect my coment.
i just told what i think as you asked me.
i know that my favorites movies are on your top 10, but the question is why do you think "Inglorious Basterds" will win the oscar for Best Picture? that is IMPOSSIBLE! believe me precious invictus and nine have more chances to win than iglorious basterds. i don't know how can i guy just think that inglorious basterds will win... OMG
wow - you've probably been waiting for weeks to type this comment. you said the hurt locker was the winner? no, you listed it alongside invictus, precious, up in the air, and nine - TWO of which weren't even nominated. wow - you really called it. (sarcasm)
how many of those movies have you seen? (nine, precious, the hurt locker, up in the air, invictus, nine?) i really hope you're not just saying that because you HEARD they were big movies...
um-try finding 10 movies to nominate that are worthy. its already guaranteed a best picture nomination, whether you want to accept it or not. get used to it.
why will it NOT get nominated is a good question? its gotten the MOST precursor awards and nominations so far (only hurt locker has more) - it is about WWII, it has universal critical praise, great cast, awesome ending (lots of academy voters are JEWS) - holocaust tie-in (*see the reader, the pianist, schindler's list, etc), filmmaker already is an OSCAR winner, shall i go on?
Basterds deserved the Oscar but the Academy left their balls in Iraq where it blew up with Guy Pearce. DAMMIT!

MandelbudetReturns 2 years ago
prove it. up isnt the best pixar has done - this isnt a slam dunk - not by a long shot.
artmania1990 2 years ago
This movie has the best animation of the year and the best story in an animated movie of 2009. That is why it will win.
MandelbudetReturns 2 years ago
u dont think coraline or fantastic mr fox had better animation? you really can't compare the two, that's why
artmania1990 2 years ago
Coraline is fantastic and Mr. Fox is not released in Denmark yet. But still I think Up will win
MandelbudetReturns 2 years ago
I think it's gonna be between coraline and the secret of kells.

Have you seen the reviews for Nine there is no way that movie will get nominated for best picture or director.
grievous1 2 years ago
ok - i would LOVE to hear what will take its place.
artmania1990 2 years ago
What could take it's place better movies like Up or The Messenger.

Of course Up can't compare with WALL-E but still it was one of the best films of the year and it was 10 times better than Nine.

if you actually watch her performance, not the movie, you'll see its actually an amazingly layered and thought out performance.
artmania1990 2 years ago
Not really, it was an overacted, cartoonish portrayal of what could've been a great performance, nothing compared to last year's "Doubt" and certainly not the kind of movie that should get any actor a third Oscar, we're talking Meryl Streep here, not Diane Keaton.

well thats my opinion. watch it again. you may be surprised.
ps i would NEVER consider that performance overacted, if anything, underacted. she could have done much more with the role
