  • Firewire is shit, never works

  • "There are no terminators!"

    So Apple defeated Skynet?

  • Steve Jobs was a magician. I love this video! He can even make data transfer technologies sound interesting. Though, I don't think he should have unplugged that drive that was playing the video without unmounting it..

  • @corsairstw that's the glory of firewire.

  • Wow. Goes to show you that even TODAY it comes on all modern PCs. Apple is da shit. God Bless Steve Jobs <3.

  • @InsaneMW2Killcams usb was and still is way more prevalent. same how usb 3 will be more successful than thunderblow.

  • And we have to unmount it before unplugging fw800 on Macs now...

  • i have my ipod third gen with firewire 400mb no sizzling or no terminate

  • i love the sound of him clearing his throat. its not annoying.

  • I have an iPod 4th Generation (Non Photo-model) and I'm still using it with FireWire 400 :D

  • i bought a new audio interface and im soooo pissed that my macbook is an 800 and my interface is a 400. now i have to spend more money

  • @rootbeermcgee You think you're pissed? I did the same for a white MacBook and I don't even having a fucking firewire port. Absolutely ridiculous, cheers Apple...

  • @AtomicDubstep i love apple's innovation but i think they purposely remove features so they can make more products, eg iPad then iPad 2 (same thing but with a camera) -__-

  • @rootbeermcgee yeah..they peaked out in 2001, and then got greedy.

  • @rootbeermcgee all you have to do is buy a firewire 400 to 800 cable for like 20 bucks and it will work perfectly...

  • 2:33 Steve Jobs Says Fuck

  • I thought I'd never see Steve Jobs wearing anything other than his turtleneck.

  • Best salesman in the world

  • seriously. whos the cunt that keeps clearing their throat?

  • that;s full off shit... people applausing before knowing what it is the firewire :)))

  • This is the steve jobs, full of energy and enthusiasm. I miss this version of steve.

  • dip switch=dip shit

  • steve's not wearing his normal suit lol

  • Comment removed

  • I dont even know what SCSI is.

  • Firewire is the best platform for data transfer I have ever used!

  • does somebody have a ricola?

  • hey john & yoko in the background

  • USB 2 = 480 Mb/s

  • @jjovereats Theoretically, I usually see it get to 9 at the most...

  • god i want light peak to come out i cant believe usb won this battle i really liked fire wire i only have like two firewire products and they never failed me i use it for music production. i have a lot of usb products andthey fail constantly

  • Light Peak is the future.

  • @DeltaPhi79 FireWire 1200 and faster has been around for some time, it's just not been used in the consumer space because we have things like eSATA. It's used in some military applications like the links between components in fighter jets and so on. LightPeak will be the next big thing when we get a working spec.

  • @TalesOfWar Jet's don't use "firewire". The F-22 uses something similar to Firewire for a few components, it's not "Firewire" though.

    .

Firewire was sponsored largely by Apple. Which is a problem for most sensible people.

  • steve jobs with wires, what ?

  • Leave that harddrive alone. Don't shake it like that ;(

  • 6:10 oOoOoOoOo a 6 GB drive!!! Huge for 1999 I'm sure that was about $500 at the time.

BTW the one guy formerly from Barenaked Ladies now lives in the town next to me after he got charged with coke possession...haha

  • E-SATA IS THE FASTIS ONE OF ALL AT 6Gb per sec

  • @TheMoondogeStudios

Nope, infiniband is the fastest. 1terabit/s

  • funny thing is firewire is 10x faster than usb

  • @AwwC00L No, firewire 800 is not faster than USB, USB 3.0 that is. USB 3.0 is capable of 400MB/s (3200Mb/sec) i believe.

  • @danwat1234 True but... FireWire (inclusing latest versions) doesn't pass through the host processor due to its better design, giving FW higher speeds in comparison to USB's 3.0 THEORETICAL rate of 4800Mb/s. Plus, I experience less issues on FW than on USB. I still prefer FW for data transfers.

  • @danwat1234 Nearly true but usb uses the cpu and firewire works independently, so with 3200 Mb/s, your cpu would probably bow down to the usb, but firewire never relies on the cpu

  • Is a firewire like a usb cable? O.o

  • So he WON'T BE BACK.

  • Ahh sweet! 6 gigs!!

  • "There are no Terminators"

    Hahaha!

  • I love FireWire, its fast and you can link devices without the use of a hub. USB has won because it's a cheap b!tch. Beside that USB is great for keyboard, mice, memory sticks etc. But for extern HDD, DV camera's FireWire is a winner.

  • Jeans + suit nice combo, Steve

  • If apple put more money and effort into firewire, they could've beaten USB. Too bad that they didn't.

  • Sure USB 2.0 has a higher optimal speed but firewire's is only slightly lower and it reaches its optimal speed more than USB 2.0. It' like PowerPC VS. Intel. Intel had a lower optimum speed, but was better in reaal life. no wonder Apple Switched. USB 3.0 vs. Firewire 800 will be the next battle of the standards. -Kazbidoof

  • they could have, easily. I think the only problem is everyone involved in firewire wanted royalties. Since that's like 7 companies, cheap computer makers opted to go with USB. Sucks, firewire is superior.

  • there was no reason to as they are not comparable usb is cheaper but rarely runs at full speed firewire runs faster but is more expensive

the main reason usb won is because it is totally backwards compatable.

  • Ooooo... I wonder if he knew at the time when he made a point of slipping it into his pocket, foreshadowing the most amazing firewire hard drive ever.... the iPod, two years later!

  • Apple is so ahead of their time with so many things but the public isn't ready for a lot of them.

  • true

  • Like eliminating disk drives

  • I mean DVD drives

  • so true

  • But what about Firewire 800 I Would like to see more support that on hardware all around, or am i just blind?

  • I know they canned it on the macbook, andI think mac mini line but are these still on the imac and mac pro? I know macbook pro still has one

  • Yes and the mac mini has it too, except they are firewire 800 so they are double the speed of what is shown here. Or instead you can get a splitter into 2 firewire 400s

  • Firewire is beautiful! Why have you removed such a beautiful thing, Mac? I bet Steve himself isn't pleased.

  • USB is about as fast as this now. now U.S.B. is now going to roll out in 2010 with 5 GB/S

  • are you sure its not 3?

  • its usb 3.0

  • i was saying are you sure its not 3 gigs per second but never mind, i looked it up and you were right

  • jeezuz those cameras are bricks, lol to think i was in the second grade when this vid came out, i really dont remember having those bricks...before my time, lol

  • haha dude i was seven too, crazy where technology has gone.

  • Such an incredible technology they came up with...it's just a shame that as of late Apple has been killing it off over the past couple of years, especially with the new MacBook line.

  • I love the way he throws things around after he is done with them

  • xxx

  • FireWire HACK!!

  • thanks for only putting ONE fw800 port on my unibody macbook pro, apple...

  • well at least they updated firewire on the new mac mini,,,

  • there was only one on the old white macbook

  • @mudkipNDS you can daisy chain firewire dude

  • @mudkipNDS

Dude how many firewire ports do you want?

  • thanks for taken it out from my macbook 13"....

  • @lowgitek The old white macbooks, iBooks still have them. Just downgrade.

  • @lowgitek you bought it and knew that stop bitching

  • @lowgitek and how many modern devices besides external hard drives still use firewire?

  • @evacguy95 Pretty much every top end professional audio board uses FireWire, same with video cameras and so on. Only FireWire has enough bandwidth and two way speed to allow for real time use without the overhead of something like USB for example. You'd be amazed just how popular FireWire is among high end media creation devices, and incase you didn't realise, Macs are generally used in these industries more than not, so it makes sense to have FW on Macs.

  • @TalesOfWar wow I never knew that thank you! My thing is wouldn't most proffesionals that are using soundboards and proffessional cameras just buy the 13 inch pro? :) Thanks for the info :)

  • first a zillion, didnt know that was a number, and Steve I was one of those 4 million people that bought more then one of those high priced products, total about $4100 still good for hd recording, bought your new mac book for $1600 which isn't in any way cheap, and what do I find out that you were lying, because I do need an extra peripheral for fire wire now a nearly 200 dollar usb to firewire jack, no extra expense, are you kidding me, and the best part is that usb isnt even as fast

  • "Hello Mom!"

    LOL

  • WTF???1 new aluminium macbook dont have

  • Fire wire is just gonna explode..

  • Firewire no-more, sob sob, wish apple watched this to see how many products hook up with firewire

  • take into account the imac g3's hard drive was only 4gb, a 6gb external drive that small was pretty damn good back then

  • 2nd Gen of a imac g3 (slot loading) had 10 GB hard drives

  • well look whatever, but the 2nd gen imacs hadn't be introduced by this stage - the point is it's 60% of the hard drive you're speaking of but the same size as a power brick, which was pretty good by those days' standards

  • haha, 6:14

6 GB external drive! look how big it is!

compardes to what we have today, tiny little thin 10 GB memory sticks! thats more of a memory brick! lol

  • Were apps really that small? *sarcasm*

  • i want to get a camera and miniDV are the best priced but they all connect through firewire, problem is my laptop doesnt have a firewire port, can i get an adapter or something like that

  • check for an IEEE 1394 port. Same thing, most PCs haev them.

  • And from this day forth, Steve carried a water bottle...

  • I remember listening to this keynote over the net (there was no streaming video back then). Jobs also briefly mentioned a "soon to be released program called Final Cut"

    This keynote changed my life.

  • OMG OMG OMG a 6 GIGABYTE DRIVE!!!!!!

hahaha, my 160 GB is 1/3 the size

  • those power mac g3's sure are blazing, they'll just tear through word 98 hahaha

  • he coughed alot

  • you can tell he has a cold, it doesnt sound like steve at all

  • nothing is gonna stop him from making a keynote speech! GO STEVE JOBS! =)

  • By the way, ahahah that 6 gb drive is huge, you can get like a tb these days for that size, ahahaha

  • this product was made on 1999 and at that time 6GB was a lot of space

  • How did they get all those camera companies to put a firewire on there cameras? Wasnt firewire invented after the cameras he showing us?

  • Sweet Lord, that throat-clearing tick he had back then is very distracting. Must have given up dairy since then...

  • his voice has changed

  • I love my PowerMac G3...

    "It's super fast..."

    omg i love you stevie

  • "1394" refers to the IEEE standards number. "FireWire" is a trademark of Apple, Inc. The IEEE-1394 standards are open, so anyone can use them. They just have to pay Apple if they use the "FireWire" name. Sony dodged this by calling it "i.Link" on their consumer video products.

  • the IEEE 1394 standard was made by Apple though! So it is actually called Firewire.

  • Right, my point was that it was released as a public standard that anyone can use. The "FireWire" name is an Apple trademark. If you use it on your product packaging, you have to pay Apple. You can use it without paying Apple as long as you don't use the Trademark.

  • Oh ok, sorry I misinterpreted what you were saying.

  • And then USB 2.0 came out making it 480Mbps...so yeah

  • And in what year did USB 2.0 finally make it out the door? Hmmm? It wasn't in 1999, was it?

  • ahem, 480 Mbps means 480 Megabitspersecond which are 60 Mbyte/s. And Firewire is 400 Mbytes/s, Firewire 400 runs @ 3200 Mbps and Firewire 800 runs @ 6400 Mbps

    Mbps = 1/8 Mbytes/s.

    Get the point?

    USB sucks.

  • Well, then they need to make a Firewire flash drive.

  • And Firewire 400 is still 10 times faster due to its dedicated chip. USB reaches 1/10 of its theoretical speed.

In fact I'm willing to bet that USB3 will still be slower than Firewire 400, technology which by the time USB3 comes out will be 15 years old.

And thats not even mentioning Firewire 800, or the new Firewire 3200 which will rape USB every which way but forward.

  • USB2's practical speed is about 240Mbps (half) not 1/10. That said, USB uses much more CPU power and I need fiwrewire for audio!

  • speaking of usb 3, where the bloddy hell is usb 3?

  • usb 3 runs at 8 gbits per second of 8000 mbits per second. yes wow.

  • Will somebody get that man some water? Jesus.

  • those are amazingly nice cameras

  • I love firewire! Stable, fast, feel better than USB.

I think 6GB at that time is HUGE already.

  • wow 6gb thats huge!

  • Wow, those camera's look so bulky compared to what we have now.

  • If I have my choice of between Firewire & USB, I'll take the Firewire peripheral any day. Still... for all the glory that Firewire holds, it still aggravates me how flaky it is to get the OS to recognize a Firewire drive from a cold startup.

  • its very dramatic when you see they first introduce firewire :) the guy talks about 6 gigs proudly :))

by the way does any1 knwo what 1394 symbolize?

  • omg 6gig? thats huge

  • Firewire is in many ways superior to USB 2.0, especially firewire 800. It's sad that it's being phased out.

  • Because there are hardly any useful devices for it.

  • its best for DV camcorders thats what i use my firewire port on my mac

  • hes a nerd
