Do you know the rules of lemans? Diesels win because the rules are made to allow diesels to win. The rules alow diesels to be 5.5 liter TWIN TURBO. If you chose to go on petrol, you can only go up to 3.4 liter NA or a 2.0 turbo. How fair is that? if they allow 5.5 liter twin turbo petrol engines they will have like 2000+hp easily.
But marketing is kiling the sport, so they allow disels to have massive engines to compete with the petrol. The great sounds of the motorsport are disapearing.
@weed46 The trick is, the diesels can't make the horsepower to compete with the other cars straight N/A, and they ARE heavier, not ludicrously so, but a significant jump in weight due to the much more durable components required not just in the engine, but the entire gearbox and drivetrain, as well as braking systems to counteract the weight.
Also factor in the low revs of a diesel, 4k is extremely high, so a diesel has to have much steeper gearing for the same speed, hence more torque...

By the way - it's not about number of torque - it's about quality of torque - petrol has better quality, and for example in TSI (VW) engine the maximum torque is available from 1500rpm - in TDI from 1750rpm. Petrol engines are lighter :) you can get more power from lower ccm (downsizing) of petrol powered engines then diesels (3.0TDI = 240PS vs. 3.0 TFSI = 333PS). Due to the positive responses to the R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept Audi decided to take a powerful diesel into production. This diesel wont have the 6.0 V12 found in the Le Mans concept but a 4.2 liter V8 TDI. Due to the smaller engine the power sinks from 500 bhp to 326 bhp. I guess we will have to wait and see, It wold be dream come true if they stay with V12.

There are Dodge 2500/3500's that can smoke your gasoline powered exotic supercars (not that i have anything against them) some Cummins diesels with propand/nitrous injection, aftermarket turbos,chips, ect. can have over 1500-2000hp and 2500-3000ft./lb. of torque. and like u said yourself, they have better fuel economy, and the newer diesels have EGR and particulate exhaust filters that filter out 99% of the soot and shit that spews out the pipes.
Because racing transmissions are not ment to last more than a race, after that they are either rebuilt or replaced. They need to build a tranny that will hold for over 150,000 miles.

TURBOdiesel - what is the first word? TURBO! Diesels are more powerfull because of TURBO! - if there were no turbocharge diesels would probably SUCKS ASS! I still think that diesels are NOT sports engines - thery can be facst, and economical, but will neber be like gas powered engines - high rpm = a lot of pleasure (and power) = sport drive. FINITO.

"Brilliant ammounts of torque" !?!?!? whats that supposed to mean, diesel engines, generally, have more H.P. to torque ratio. diesels usually have twice as much torque as h.p. and gas engines usually have the same torque and h.p. (generally speaking) for the most part.

Not true about Audi pulling the R8 V-12 TDI off production. I am good friends with someone who is good friends and works with Mr. duPont from duPont Registry and he actually told me yesterday that it should be released in Europe and hong kong for the 2011/2012 and then soon after will come to the U.S.

Michael Dick, Director Technical Development of German car maker Audi AG has given this announcement. Due to the positive responses to the R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept Audi decided to take a powerful diesel into production. This diesel wont have the 6.0 V12 found in the Le Mans concept but a 4.2 liter V8 TDI. Due to the smaller engine the power sinks from 500 bhp to 326 bhp. I guess we will have to wait and see, It wold be dream come true if they stay with V12.

Mr. Vunley, I know the Diesel powered cars need less stops for refuel and this is the most important things that helps'em win the races - Peugeot used the same strategy and as everyone know - beat Audi last time. I will keep my thoughts that diesel powered engines should be used in small, economy and cheap cars... Best regards.

There are Dodge 2500/3500's that can smoke your gasoline powered exotic supercars (not that i have anything against them) some Cummins diesels with propand/nitrous injection, aftermarket turbos,chips, ect. can have over 1500-2000hp and 2500-3000ft./lb. of torque. and like u said yourself, they have better fuel economy, and the newer diesels have EGR and particulate exhaust filters that filter out 99% of the soot and shit that spews out the pipes.

Because racing transmissions are not ment to last more than a race, after that they are either rebuilt or replaced. They need to build a tranny that will hold for over 150,000 miles.

I was exaggerating really. Obviously there's not a car that has 1 million hp. Even the rocket big rig only has 30,000hp.
It's just that some people talk down about cars that cost a lot but don't have the most hp.
The Audi TTS for instance is a GREAT car [I'm getting one very soon. It's being built as I speak ^_^] but most people criticize it because of it only has 265hp. What they don't' realize is the build quality and the superior interiors that Audi has.

2. yea it may have iron fielin suspension but the AWD system really lets it down. it actually pretty poor
