sorry "hollpop1" but some of these images are fairly misleading, and they suggest that desertification is the process whereby somehow magically lush, fertile land turns into a desert, with sand dunes and all. THIS IS WRONG!!!!
@hollypop1 you misread, I'm saying that the video is "fairly misleading" and this suggests something which is wrong. The video could be said to be wrong as you stated that certain pictures that looked like fertile, fields turned into others which looked like a barren wasteland. remember that desertification only occurs in "arid, semi-arid and dry sub-tropical areas" (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification). Technically, therefore, your video is wrong.
@eeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkk Yeah, desertification happens in ""arid, semi-arid and dry sub-tropical areas" and these areas are created by deforestation, over pumping water tables, and erosion caused by the latter. Your statement wasn't very well thought out. I guess you never heard of the dust bowl?

Saudi Arabia have hot spreading deserts like these, they are filtering the sea water and pumping it over the desert lands, where they have planted green life so they can pretty much grow anything with the hot sun and water.
Saudi Arabia is turning green because of it, what an awesome change.
Great video, I loved it.... I'm doing a review for grade 9 biology and Desertification popped up. This video was a fun way to learn/review about the Topic. Great song choice. Nice pictures. Good video.
man rly nice vid im doing a project for geography so i came to this vid and it made me feel bad, i liked the soccer field picture can u send me a link so i can use it plz!
rbdbety - the trees help because they prevent topsoil from being blown away; they trap it and therefore allow 'drifts' of soil to build up. Specifically in this great vid the trees stop dust from collecting on road - but the real thing is keeping the soil intact for peasant farmers. In parts of Africa they use hand made mud 'stones' piled a few inches off the ground to trap soil - it seems really pathetic but it all that they have. Keep the faith you guys!
@rbdbety Trees help us by cleaning the air , covering the soil so the soil can't damaged, they protect us from sunlight, and in some cases from sand and wind , they also give us food and places for animals to leave
@rbdbety Tree's help by stopping erosion. Erosion is the leading cause of desertification. After this is over pumping water tables at a faster rate then they can return. Over grassing is a third concern. The book "plan b 4.0" is one of leading books in climate change.

so desertification is reversible? i always thought once soil becomes sand it cannot be turned back?
BVargas78 1 year ago
If something desertificates it doesn't necessarily mean it has turned into sand.

It's a good thing I like deserts. just give me a canyon to dwell in.

I especially liked the picture at the end:
"Today we play on this field. Tomorrow, we may be playing on this field. But what about the day after tomorrow?"
Very nice. Good work.

One question: How the trees are helping? Answer please.
rbdbety 3 years ago
well its not necessarily the trees that help;
the grass that was there is used to graze cattle for food,
the land dries out leaving no water,
and who wants a dessert in their back garden?
(i did this video a few years ago, so im not entirely sure if that answer is right, but thats my best guess)
