  • Also find it kind of ironic Liz ended up in a relationship with Jeff many years after this

  • Brings back memories of the 80's. Those were the days.

  • Just beautiful.

  • Magnificent

  • a special song

  • Can't really listen to the studio version after hearing this version first.

  • even Jeff Buckley fell in love with this... :)

  • endless rispect for Faser the goddess, but i think that buckley is just unreacheable

  • Anyone know the guitar chords for the song?

  • Without writing out the whole thing, G, D, C, Em & F. Start off with G. Email me if you want more info. Good luck :)

  • @jimaginata it starts with Bb

  • @woodros I'm really no expert so, you're probably right, but the chords I used just seemed to work OK for me. Cheers for the info :)

  • @jimaginata yep it starts Bb F Eb Gm (twice) then Bb Ab Gm Bb; Gm Bb F Eb Bb

  • @ShortisCarol Did you join YouTube just to tell me that? Hehe....But I'll be sure to remember :)

  • its Bb F Eb Gm, they will fit with this

  • deffo the best version of this track-you can't get much closer to a perfect ballad - fuckin beautiful - i'm gonna have it at my funeral

  • is it me or her mouth looks like that lady on alice and wonderland OFF with your head LMAO !!!!

  • Liz Fraser. What else can you say. Just fabulous.

  • This song is just pure emotion, a voice so good it is beyond description.

  • @grlspeed1 Agreed.

  • Brilliant..............

  • I don't know about the other things, but I think this is the sound of heaven. God, what a sound, I mean - these sounds flowing from her mouth. I cry, it's too beautiful for me.

  • what show was this on?

  • twin peaks

  • why wouldn't this be considered a This mortal Coil version?

  • class....Jeez I love her voice.

  • Wow. I am completely speechless.

  • There should be an exploding hand for when a "Like" thumbs-up just isn't enough.

  • Stunning I still well up listening to this...

  • If you can listen to this without getting goosebumps then you have no soul.

  • @fakenhamman if you can listen to this without weeping then you must be young.

  • angels sing like her ...

  • A wonderful song, a great interpretation. I love this different version from the studio recording, it has yet another touch of incredible and eerie beauty.

It gives me goosepimples every time...

  • Oh my God that's so beautiful. I love the "Mortal Coil" version but that one is even more brilliant!

  • Belleza.

  • Thank you I thought good music was history.Brought it back to life thumbs up if you agree

  • @channelmixer - you can take a peak, she's close enough to mystical looking, channelmixer!

  • poeplem should listen then comment if arseholes dont like this then they should simly say nothing mydogsparky! grow up

  • I love this song, one of my all time favorites. Soothing.

  • she has a cool looking mouth which seems very appropriate..

  • This is a timeless cover. From a musical perspective it purely reflects the power of simplicity, stripping all but a single harmony composed of the perfect voice and underlying melody. Everything in this performance fell into place and did so in a way which seems to engage emotions indescribable in comparison to those typically experienced.

  • @sprecordings Well, its very easy for you to say that

  • Comment removed

  • @sprecordings it must be hard to type when you are sucking your own cock and sroking your ego ..you really are a pretentious twat - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. i love the cocteaus but wanky student types like you are so up your own arse that you think no-one else could appreciate them

  • Comment removed

  • @sprecordings i agree, greatest "cover" of all time. Torn between this or the original as my favourite, either way it is my favourite song ever and will be my funeral song. Not a huge Cocteau Twins fan tbh, I don't find anything in their back catalogue where her voice is as perfect as this, even This Mortal Coil's released version. btw You only see her eyes fully open at 2.51 as the camera fades which is almost my favourite moment in the whole clip.

  • 16 idiots.

  • tim buckley is good but this touches more

  • i think K0OzmoNrdps is a better live recording, though it has far fewer views. check it out if you like this.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Couldn't get it onto my harddrive fast enough!

  • @JFROXY IT`s a sad shame that you know Nothing about GOOD music..................

  • @mydogsparky and this from someone who likes the Foo Fighters....yes quite.

  • @JFROXY You have just proved my point

  • @mydogsparky ...let me see, you sound like some filthy, plooky faced, skint student. Why should I even my wit with you? piss off.

  • I think she looks like a dude!!! lol.. But i love the song and her voice!

  • another nugget of Gold on the Y.T

  • Great voice

  • Unreal.

  • I get close to crying when I listen to this...I just hate admitting it.

  • absolutely mind blowing voice...a perfect song for her.

  • @Noel12Hendrix i know that

  • 1 word describes it: AMAZING!

  • How has this been missed for 40 years?.

  • What a voice...what a soul1

    Portugal

  • lovely bones!!!!

  • "Were you hare when I was fox?" is what is sung in Tim Buckley's original song. What Liz is singing, I'm not sure, but Laurie Freelove (ex-Two Nice Girls) also recorded a version influenced by This Mortal Coil's, and sang "Were you there when I was forced out?".

  • @eyevocal Sounds like 'when I was flotsam' to me.

  • @heyjudes59

    It's "full sail".

  • @hightimesbruce

    sounds like floatsam

  • @timmchap35 I think you're right... but most of the people that have covered it have tweaked the lyrics every time i think.

  • @timmchap35

I know; it's just the way she pronounces words. Listen to a regular Cocteau Twins track, you can barely make out any of the lyrics.

  • WOW* Awesome Post, Feel like a Mountain Climb into the Highlands*

  • awesome!

  • makes my hair stand on end still after all these years...

  • sung live, that is pretty damn fucking good!

  • More soulful than the This Mortal Coil version. Truly great performance

  • @seanus4508 This is Mortal Coil

  • @llangol actually these are the two people from Cocteau Twins. So it is really The Cocteau Twins doing a cover version of a Bucklely song produced by the two founding memebers of This Mortal Coil.

  • One of my FAVOURITE bands. Cheers for this.

  • This is even better than the official version, awesome. Something extra about Liz's voice and the sustain on the guitar.

Just now I note that 16 people have downvoted this vid, you will rot in hell for that.

  • @Britlurker their ears are already rotten even before they die

  • @Britlurker their ears are already rotten even before they die

  • Her voice was totally faultless.

  • bloemkolen en kippevel

  • omdat ik het zeg verdorie. twee bloemkolen en kippevel.

  • Poor thing is terrified! Doesn't matter! She is still amazing! I've loved her since I was a kid!

  • so so great!

  • INCREDIBLE! Thank-You

  • Nothing short of brilliant...

  • Otra versión.

  • Absolutly beautiful!!!

  • Truly truly beautiful !!!

  • Truly truly beautiful !!!!!!!!

  • This song is from an This mortal coil's album called " It'll end in tears "

  • wow - this version of this song will live for a long long time

  • got to give her credit for this being live... she still sounds good!!

  • Nice voice.... Phalaïna

  • Did I dream you dreamed about me......That line sums it ALL up. Probably the greatest line I ever heard.

  • @riverplate0101 exactly. brings tears to my eyes.

  • i often wonder..... a duet between her and the late Billy McKenzie

  • I take it back, I think they're all always saying "flotsam." Tim included.

  • love, love, love...

  • I wish she would sing without the effects more often

  • Cocteu Twins y Sugar Cubes son dos bandas que conocí gracias a Lyn Fanshtein en Rock 101 en los años 80.

  • Can someone please help me out - when was this recorded as it looks fairly recent.

Totally agree with all that you are saying about the music, always been a massive fan. She ( they) are just amazing

  • @TheBaglanbaggy

This would be from about 1984 - the group joined some other musicians under the name 'This Mortal Coil' and released a recording of this song under that name, originally on 4AD Records, in Britain anyway, in 1984. An astonishing interpretation: Elizabeth Fraser is a remarkable singer (and a highly original composer in her own right). Lovely!

  • I need help with a part of the lyrics.

In Tim Buckley's version after he says "Did I dream you dreamed about me?" it then sounds like he's saying "Were you here when I was....." When I was what? The lyrics online say "Were you hare when I was fox." But... no. That just doesn't make any sense in the context of the song.

So what does she say? "Were you here when I was full sail" is what is written for This Mortal Coil's version, but in this live version it doesn't sound like full sail to me

  • @heysatan8 sounds kinda like 'flotsam' which is a term for a certain type of shipwreck.

  • @moforex I'm absolutely positive she's saying "flotsam" here, and yes it makes perfect sense. In another version it sounds like she *is* saying "full sail." Both are different from what Tim sang, so I think they just changed it up a little.

  • @heysatan8

    full sail

  • @heysatan8 : hare and foxed was the Buckley lyric,a metaphor for chasing elusive things? It is also appears as forsook,(forsaken), and foxed,(confused),fullsail and forced.Glad to clear that up for you.I don't care what Liz sings :as long as she does so.

  • @theMacvarish

    "flotsam"....floating debre

  • @SkipaJig4Bass : I did once suggest that was what Liz sang : Oh how I got pounded.Apparently it is "foxed, when I was hare",in the original version,a reference to one of the Greek myths that inspired the lyric. Care I ? Not as long as her voice remains in the world.

  • @SkipaJig4Bass

Flotsam - Floating debre from a ship sinking..including survivors floating...

Jetsam - material that has been discarded to lighten the vessel.

Lagan - cargo that is lying on the bottom of the ocean, sometimes marked by a buoy, which can be reclaimed later.

Derelict - cargo that is also on the bottom of the ocean, but which no one has any hope of reclaiming.

  • @SkipaJig4Bass And Jettison?

  • @heysatan8

It actually is "Flotsam" which means the floating unintentional items floating off a sinking ship. It's definitely NOT to do with a hare or fox...LOL... although the "Full Sail" wording sounds feasible too.... I guess too many people didn't know what it meant....

  • @SkipaJig4Bass I was dead wrong in the author's version, but I'm convinced Liz is singing "flotsam"...she uses two syllables and ends in an "m"... (lip reading! haha) Buckley also separates "til your singing, eyes and fingers" as 3 separate items..where Liz sings it as two...like "singing eyes" "and fingers"

......Whatever it is....I'm entranced.... I wish she could sing a song of mine....

  • such a beautiful song introduced to me by a beautiful man who died in an ugly way RIP John Conrad

  • Her voice sounds beautiful. Very soothing.

  • buenisima

  • Tim Buckley wrote it, like, Mitch. Ken?

  • Hear me sing, swim to me

Swim to me, let me enfold you

Here I am, here I am

    Waiting to hold you

  • I have never even wanted to know what Elizabeth Frasier looked like. I just never wanted to associate that voice with a earthly being. For me it's otherworldly and mesmerizing. I don't want to watch the video, I still want to imagine some mystical being making those sounds.

  • 100% true

  • @channelmixer Earthly Beings Rock.....it's ALL HER Body, Soul, and Spirit! LoveUGodBless, Todd and Joey Bennett-Dallman KABBALAH MATTHEWSHEPARD MADONNALICIOUS

  • @channelmixer Were you aware that she sang on the soundtrack for "The Fellowship of the Ring"? A lament-beautiful,very moving.I hadn't heard her voice before that time.I see that I had missed a lot,and I'm making up for lost time!

  • @channelmixer Personally, knowing these sounds came from a human being gives me hope in the creative power of humanity.

  • @channelmixer Wow, there is a human being behing the voice. Now there is a downer for you, daydreamer. Personally I couldnt care less what she looks like. The music and lyrics together are so moving and (especially now) classic that I couldnt give a flying .... if she looked like quasimodo (and of course you are far from it my dear) But in the parlance of these times. Fuck you, you halfwit and the 24 other fuckwits that joined you....

  • @Makadonska27 She's not that bad, great song, don't know who your comments are directed at.>

  • @channelmixer wow. same.

  • George Michael opened used to open his shows with the same version.

  • this is music long forgotten. none of today's artists can touch this type of effect on the human soul. Maybe one. Lisa Gerrard

  • liz's voice is beautiful. it seems as though her english pronunciatioin has gotten better...

  • jesus. can this live version be ANY better? its amazinggggggggg

  • Breathtaking!!!!

  • I was introduced to Cocteau twins by the trance remixes. Reminds me of Lisa Gerrard in ability to use voice as the focal instrument. Absolutely haunting.

  • Not sure where you are going with your comments Mojo, but her performance speaks for itself.

If you want to pick apart accents/dialects I'd suggest you look elsewhere.

    /Troll thanks for playin'

  • what year is this from?

  • Liz is more than amazing.

  • 'Angelic' seems cliche when describing Elizabeth Fraser's voice, because it's the first adjective that comes to EVERYONE'S mind upon hearing it. And how cute is she? Too shy to 'perform' for the camera, looking down. And her lips....

  • fuk Lady GaGa... fuk x faktor

  • Forget Goth, this is pure artistry that defies all genres and categories.

Beautiful. How many souls has that voice soothed?

    Thanks for uploading (-:

  • @steelyman08 listen to more buckley, without the all that reverb.
