I don't know about the other things, but I think this is the sound of heaven. God, what a sound, I mean - these sounds flowing from her mouth. I cry, it's too beautiful for me.
A wonderful song, a great interpretation. I love this different version from the studio recording, it has yet another touch of incredible and eerie beauty.
This is a timeless cover. From a musical perspective it purely reflects the power of simplicity, stripping all but a single harmony composed of the perfect voice and underlying melody. Everything in this performance fell into place and did so in a way which seems to engage emotions indescribable in comparison to those typically experienced.
@sprecordings it must be hard to type when you are sucking your own cock and sroking your ego ..you really are a pretentious twat - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. i love the cocteaus but wanky student types like you are so up your own arse that you think no-one else could appreciate them
@sprecordings i agree, greatest "cover" of all time. Torn between this or the original as my favourite, either way it is my favourite song ever and will be my funeral song. Not a huge Cocteau Twins fan tbh, I don't find anything in their back catalogue where her voice is as perfect as this, even This Mortal Coil's released version. btw You only see her eyes fully open at 2.51 as the camera fades which is almost my favourite moment in the whole clip.

"Were you hare when I was fox?" is what is sung in Tim Buckley's original song. What Liz is singing, I'm not sure, but Laurie Freelove (ex-Two Nice Girls) also recorded a version influenced by This Mortal Coil's, and sang "Were you there when I was forced out?".
@llangol actually these are the two people from Cocteau Twins. So it is really The Cocteau Twins doing a cover version of a Bucklely song produced by the two founding memebers of This Mortal Coil.
This would be from about 1984 - the group joined some other musicians under the name 'This Mortal Coil' and released a recording of this song under that name, originally on 4AD Records, in Britain anyway, in 1984. An astonishing interpretation: Elizabeth Fraser is a remarkable singer (and a highly original composer in her own right). Lovely!
In Tim Buckley's version after he says "Did I dream you dreamed about me?" it then sounds like he's saying "Were you here when I was....." When I was what? The lyrics online say "Were you hare when I was fox." But... no. That just doesn't make any sense in the context of the song.
So what does she say? "Were you here when I was full sail" is what is written for This Mortal Coil's version, but in this live version it doesn't sound like full sail to me
@moforex I'm absolutely positive she's saying "flotsam" here, and yes it makes perfect sense. In another version it sounds like she *is* saying "full sail." Both are different from what Tim sang, so I think they just changed it up a little.
@heysatan8 : hare and foxed was the Buckley lyric,a metaphor for chasing elusive things? It is also appears as forsook,(forsaken), and foxed,(confused),fullsail and forced.Glad to clear that up for you.I don't care what Liz sings :as long as she does so.
@SkipaJig4Bass : I did once suggest that was what Liz sang : Oh how I got pounded.Apparently it is "foxed, when I was hare",in the original version,a reference to one of the Greek myths that inspired the lyric. Care I ? Not as long as her voice remains in the world.
It actually is "Flotsam" which means the floating unintentional items floating off a sinking ship. It's definitely NOT to do with a hare or fox...LOL... although the "Full Sail" wording sounds feasible too.... I guess too many people didn't know what it meant....
@SkipaJig4Bass I was dead wrong in the author's version, but I'm convinced Liz is singing "flotsam"...she uses two syllables and ends in an "m"... (lip reading! haha) Buckley also separates "til your singing, eyes and fingers" as 3 separate items..where Liz sings it as two...like "singing eyes" "and fingers"
......Whatever it is....I'm entranced.... I wish she could sing a song of mine....
It actually is "Flotsam" which means the unintentionally lost items floating off a sinking ship. It's definitely NOT to do with a hare or fox...LOL... although the "Full Sail" wording sounds feasible too.... I guess too many people didn't know what it meant....
I have never even wanted to know what Elizabeth Frasier looked like. I just never wanted to associate that voice with a earthly being. For me it's otherworldly and mesmerizing. I don't want to watch the video, I still want to imagine some mystical being making those sounds.
