Having accountants in my family, the GST was and still is a nightmare - however it brought our tax system in line with that of over 80 others who have a GST or VAT system in place.  This allowed repayment of considerable federal deficit thanks to the Labor government, and it is still today, modest in comparison with the VAT/GST tax rate effected in many other states...

Well he didn't really need your sympathy because he won 29 seats in that election, which was (and still is) the second biggest majority in Australian politics. And of course Mr Howard was Australia's second longest serving PM.

You can't stay someone rode into office on the coat of someone they defeated by a massive margin. And Howard is totally different from Keating, in a better way.

Howard stayed in for as long as he did cos all of the economic reforms that Keating put in finally came into effect. He just took the credit.

Would that be the "Keating economic reforms" such as a national debt in the billions of dollars, unemployment and interest rates in the teens, a budget in a huge deflicit, or a resession we had to have? Keating can't exactly take credit for balancing the budget into surplus and introducing the GST.

Howard was the treasurer before Keating, he stuck the country into national debt. Keating took over when Liberal (rightly) lost in the early 80's, and managed to drag the economy back up.

Recessions are a fact of economics. Like he said, the recession was going to happen no matter what they did about it. Introducing the GST simply tacked on more tax dollars for everyone to pay, and Howard -swore- that he wouldn't introduce it.

Then what happened?

Oh, he introduced it. Go figure.

And Howard couldn't do much to overcome the difficulties a Treasurer would have to endure after the economic disaster that was the Whitlam years (e.g. the Loans Affair, staggering unemployment and high interest rates) - Fact

Politicians always say things they can't take back. Hawke swore that no child would live in poverty by 1990. Then what happened?

keatings reforms created a trade imbalance. you realise the main things he did like floating the dollar took place in 1983. since then we had record interest rates and an awful recession which took place 7 years after these reforms. then 13 years on howard gets in and the economy actually picks up. wow it takes a speciall kind of ignoramus to atribute that to keating.
