good points guys. IMO this and all of their music, and treys inspiration all more pieces of the puzzle, in my mind, and this is no "accident"...he was clearly given a gift, and sent here by the BIG GUY!!
ok, i've already commented on this vid, but whatever...in reference to the above comment, i'm a convinced atheist, but this song and a handful of others in the phish catalog are the closest i've ever had to a genuine religious experience. how a human, who is in most ways like all of us, could write this is just beyond me. i damn near cry almost every time i hear this, it just may be the most beautiful piece of music ever written.
my best friend played this on acoustic as the processional for my wedding last year, and it still gets me misty damn near every time i hear it. still waiting for my first live one, come on boys!
haha, funny. No I was was saying G-D as in GOD. Not to say that I know that there is a GOD but, Im pretty sure there is, as I have had moments that I felt its presence in numerous situations.
Maybe my favorite Phish song, a rare gem. Gorgeous from start to finish. And since Gordon and Fishman are both jewish, TMWSIY leading in and out of Alvenu Malkenu is also very nice. Shalom!!!
I love the Hebrew songs. Im not a jew, but being a Christian you have to appreciate these songs as songs that are delightful to G-Ds (ears?, if we are trully made in his image) Actually I think most of Phish's music is delightful to the Lord. He probably is hoping he got lucky with the ticket lottery.
great video. Just wonder if the guys knew what it meant in Hebrew or when the prayer is used. I remember when I saw Phish in 1995 or 1996 with my sister. They played this song and we both looked at each other and laughed. 19,000 people rocking to this song. Pretty amazing.
The whole song is hebrew. Avienu Malkanu means Our Father, Our King. It's said during some of the morning minyan services and during the High Holy Days.
@RaddNiner I see you wrote this a while back but yes the words avenu malkeinu are "Our Father Our King" and there is a beautiful verse that talks about being saved....
10-03-99 was Simchas Torah. So this concert, assuming it was at night, was Motzei Simchas Torah...

The actual translation:
Our Father, Our King, be gracious with us and answer us, though we have no worthy deeds; treat us with charity and kindness, and save us.

Traslation:
Our Father Our King
Hear our prayer
We have sinned before thee
Have compassion upon us and upon our children
Help us bring an end to pestilence, war, and famine
Cause all hate and oppression to vanish from the earth
Inscribe us for blessing in the book of life
Let the new year be a good year for us
