Here in Kentucky we get to chose when the siren is acceptable. Actually we are banned from using the siren in certain locations like through residential neighborhoods. Usually I will turn mine on right as I hit the main road. I may need to bump it a few time but there is no need to blast it.
@fire2139 yes, you're generally supposed to be using an audible warning device on if using red lights & requesting right of way in NY but there are always exceptions. (i.e. i'm not going to be blasting 200 watts at 3 am while going to a call when nobody else is on the residential road i'm on, in the middle of a snow storm when i don't want people pulling over into a snowbank, etc.). Let the driver (who's familiar w/ HIS area, HIS dept bylaws, & HIS capabilities to decide how to safely respond)
Nicely put. I hate it when ppl try to tell me how to do things according to the Law. If I were in a More Populated area, then Yes I will leave it on at all times. Most of the time I wont use it at night time. After 9 PM. Cause in my area not a lot of ppl are out on the roads.
I don't mean to be a smartass, but why do people always make comments as though the laws in their state are the laws everywhere? I agree that you should ALMOST always use a siren when you're running code, but there are exceptions. Most of the time it's just using common sense. FFJWHITE is in New York & you're in Pennsylvania. Every detail of the laws governing emergency vehicles is not necessarily the same for both of you.
