  • lots of important info. great vid man, when I saw the midi bit I was annoyed with PT since in logic you can just arm your track and you're ready to go, but when you went to the operations tab i was like "motherfucker! I really needed this info!!!" glad you posted gonna spend the rest of the day watching these

  • One day I'm recording fine, then the next day, I'm experiencing low input on my mic. It had to happen when I was configuring my speakers in an effort to use my Oxygen 25 midi. Help, somebody please.

  • Excellent! Had problems configuring my new MIDI keyboard in the MIDI Studio set-up of PRo Tools but this has helped me sort it out. Thanks!! :)

I have the Motif XS7, Macbook Pro (OS Lion), M-Audio Mobile Pre, Native Instruments Maschine Mikro and Roland SPD-30 Octapad. Running Protools SE. I can record audio, but i can't figure out how to Map the I/O's and Transport functions. Basically getting the tempo and what not between my motif and protools to sync up. Ugh! HELP?

  • Bro i have just a midi cable usb , the pro tools work with it ? And i have a kurzweil controller , and fast track pro

  • is protools good for producing dubstep and other electronic music? or is it more for recording actual instruments. ive been using FL and ableton for a while and im wondering if i should switch to Pro tools

  • @djAlrus fl studio is a good enough DAW. if you're not sure the quality you can get out of it because ure lookin for tutorials, check out these guys: theguywiththebeats, streetworkmusic, mjdbeats, mdlproductions to name a few. I also have a few beats up myself. There is no need to change with the ever growing FL, you can just supplement it with other DAWs.

Then y am i here? I'm actually looking at other DAWs to see what FL Studio CANNOT do, or doesn't do as well, so i can use in collab.

  • @dvsjaymusic thx man :)

  • I want to get pro tools.

Would anyone know which one I should buy? I'm a beginner... I also want to make fake drums behind my guitar etc...

If anyone answers then thanks heaps for your time in advance-much appreciated... :0)

  • @DavinaFaerie Hi there im going to cut to the chase, Get a program that your computer can handle, I have pro tools se the cheapest one thereis, I like it, however i had to upgrade my Toshiba notepad Ram to 4 gig and also the cheap pro tools doesnt work on windows vista unless you install a service pack from microsoft. if u have a mac laptop or a regular computer i say go for it, The condensor mic on the cheap pro tools se uses a usb input which suprisingly sounds AWESOME. continued..

  • @TheJosh1111111111111 ... however if you want to make you own drum beats that is a different story you might have to purchace the keyboard to create your own beats or download a drum machine generator and somehow intergate it into protools somehow, however the pro tools does come with a lot of drum loops in a vareity of beats and styles. great tool for beginers.

  • @TheJosh1111111111111 Awesome! Thanks heaps Josh.

Hey, just one more question, have you heard of "The music producer" website? they offer apparently the easiest music production for beginners at a really cheap cost, like extremely cheap as compared to protools. Idk, I'm thinking I should go for that instead, But what do you think?

I want something I can pick up easily & conveniently, or is protools still the way to go?

    Thanks heaps once again.. :0)

  • @DavinaFaerie I have not heard of that i will check it out. Personally i like pro tools, but it really all comes down to the mic, the se version comes with an awesome mic, PLUS pro tools has an awesome online community, there are a lot of you tube tutorials for pro tools. almost any question you could have about PT somebody has a video for it , thats something you might want to think about too. any who good luck with your decision let me know how things go. peace

  • This helped me set up my midi controller but I didn't realize you have to go to the digidesign website and download the midi USB drivers for the audio interface. Hope this saves someone else from an hour of frustration.

  • yeah, I know what you mean, that's why i secured a professional protools engineer to come do my set up, because I would have literally lost it , wit frustration. And trust me he took 4 hours to work out the nooks and crannies.

  • chicke

  • Im trying to put my eletric guitar on the MIDI input on my macbook pro.. but i can't record anything! can anyone help me? thanks.

  • great job explaining man

  • Thank you so VERY much man, I was trying to get Midi Out to send Data to my synth, your explanation helped me understand! Thanks a lot!!!

  • Ok. THis is a good video and this guy knows what he is talking about. I on the other hand do not. I just bought a mac book pro tools 9 and an Allen & Heath 16 channel mixer board that I would use for an interface. I am totally LOST with pro tools and well the hole thing. I just wana record a demo for r band. I wana recod my drums first but i cant even figure out how to do that. Can you help me PLEAS??!!??!!

  • @mookboarder152 I have a Allen & heath soundboard taht's really difficoult to connect - the problem might lie there. Contact your seller, perhaps?

  • @mookboarder152 i ended up buying a dvd tutorial for pro tools on ebay for about 30 dollars, even thou, i use free youtube videos from great guys, like this one...you can get a ton of stuff from the dvds...i am not a seller , i am just trying to help...

  • is there a way to bend the pitch of a midi note like what you can do with a pitch wheel on a keyboard? i have it set in xpand so im not using an actual keyboard

  • This didn't help me. I have Protools SE with M-Audio MobilePre. A Motif XS7, a HP with Windows Vista 32-bit. Still lost, I've done everything in hardware on the Motif, I know nothing of software. I'm just gonna pour a bucket of water on my rig like Homer Simpson..."that got it"...

  • um, could you tell me how much this thing cost? and where to get it? im really trying to make my own music and this thing looks great, btw great tutorial!

  • nice tutorial. what pro tools is this?

  • @25guitarplayer1 lol its on the top left like any other program

  • You are the best Thank so much...!

  • This midi-Setup doesn't work anymore with Protools 9 is there an update anywhere?

  • @werekorden I am wondering the same thing. I just bought Pro Tools 9 and I have never used Pro Tools or any recording software. I am completely new and lost. I bought a 16 track Allen & Heath interface mixer and I dont know what to do. I NEED HELP BAD!!

  • @mookboarder152 : Sorry still good no clue.

  • Hey man thanks for the tutorial it was helpful i am recording midi from my Yamaha motifxs6 into protools how do i convert those midi files in audio files?

  • Hey,

  • I have protools 8 a Mbox and an Akia keyboard. When i play the keyboard I can only get the sound of an instrument from protools. Do you know what i have to do to get what i am playing on the keyboard to record in protools?

  • @alexandratyron go where it say setup it and where you see studio click there and follow your manual on protools is easy

  • hey guys, i'm looking to get a DAW and this is the one im looking at. I dont have any hardware yet though, does Pro Tools allow you to make melodies/beats using a piano roll type feature like FL Studio has? (sorry for the crude comparison).

  • Hey , First of all, this a a good video,. its a good tempo / "slow" / step by step .. but, in the MIDI studio setup, will it also show any plugins , like VST's ???

Please send me a message here on youtube ,., thanks alot

  • Good vid :)

  • Thanks for the tutorial man! I am gettingsignal when I hook up my yamaha keyboard, I record and the midi track shows the recording, however when I play it to listen to it nothing comes out...c uold you help with this? I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.

    Thanks

  • where and for how much can i find a typical pro tools studio online complete with wires...software and hardware..micstand....keyboard and all...

  • @PsykopathicTV you need an interface in order for pro tools to function. in this case, you need an m-audio interface. otherwise, having pro tools with no interface for it to operate is purely irrelevant. because pro tools is so SPECIFIC, you can't just go and buy any old interface. it HAS to be m-audio version. check out the different m-audio interfaces at m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=recording

  • Great stuff man, tnx alot for showing us how to work with protools.

  • station? lol

  • hi man I have issues trying to plug my M-audio keyboard to the interface going thru midi I bought a cable for it I plug it but then I don't know how to assign it so I gave up and I plug it via USB it works controls the plugins but I thing will be better if i Plug it direct to the interface via Midi what do you think?

  • @sonico73 Sounds like you haven't attatched both your MIDI In/MIDI Out to the keyboard, you need two wires.. It will work with the USB because that has both In and Out channels on it. Plug your MIDI Out into the Keyboard In and Keyboard In to MIDI Out (on your soundcard) and from there you need to assign it. I hope that helps you bud.

  • hi mic1one. can you tell me if this is correct? i connected a MIDI cable out from my korg triton to the MIDI input on my digi002. Do i need to do anything else? Do i need to also connect midi out from my 002 to midi in on my korg triton? I am able to play my software instruments, but i sometimes get the following problem. I have a VI on track 1 and another VI on track 2. The VI on track 1 is open, track is record-enabled, yet the VI on track 2 is what's being heard when i play my keyboard

  • i want to know if i hook up my modules to pro tools but keep my mpc seperate and dump in the the mpc as audio via the 8 outputs on the back, would pro tools change the feel of my song by me not using the modules in the mpc. basically i am looking for a new set up without having to hook up the mpc to pro tools via midi

  • i have no idea what im doing with this ?? ?????? when i plug my mic in . its like it doesnt pick up man . life sucks with this

  • @MilitiaMackMusic you have to give your mic some phantom power. push in the "48V" button on your interface then control the volume on your interface. you can have a powerful mic but if you're not giving your interface some juice to "recognize" your mic, you have little to NO sound.

  • @Spillberg ok

  • awesome

  • @davemataika upgrade it interface

  • @davematiaka do u have mbox mini 1 or 2 cuz 2 has a midi output

  • Hey man,

Just a quick question about MIDI.

I have a mbox mini which has no MIDI input/output on the interface.

If i have a keyboard with MIDI can i just connect that through USB to my computer, or would i need a separate interface?

    Thanks.

  • @DavidMataika USB works.

  • at 4:29, when I click on midi setup, the default menu does not look like the what's demonstrated here. Is this because I don't have my m audio hook up and recognized. It just shows digidesign mbox 2 pro in the audio devices.

  • pro tools sucks! by the time you figure this shit out, your music will go out of style! just go with cubase and shell out for a professional mic!

  • Man this all looks confusing lol , gonna have to start from the bottom before I can touch this stuff

  • I Dont Really Like Pro Tools I Think Reason 4 Nd FL Studio 9 Are Better And Easy To Use.

Even thought alot of top producers use pro tools lol.

  • Great video. I've run into a problem with my MIDI, and I hope you can help. I recently picked up a Casio PX-130 Privia that has MIDI capabilities via USB. I'm using M-Powered 7.4 software on my lap top. When I first hooked up my Keyboard it loaded fine and the software recognized it, however when I set up a Midi Track, it wouldn't play. I tried rebooting everything and I lost the keyboard somehow. Do you have a video MIDI track set up through USB? Also my Predifined option for "ALL" gone.

  • great tip at the end about the memory. I actually had a question about my midi setup in protools, i have my mpd connected thru midi cables not usb to my digi002, and am trying to use structure free but it only plays one note no matter what pad i push!! if you could help me out it would be great i've been stuck for weeks...

  • Hey, thanks for the tutorial. I have a digi 003 board and i have the two midi cord hooked up (out to in, in to out). i open up pro tools and go to midi editor and create a new instrument. I go to the input selection but theres no default digi 003 midi like yours does. Is there anything you did to get it there? Thanks Mica.

  • Hi Mica,

My question is about routing effects such as reverb to an Aux bus. In the analog world the output comming from the reverb Aux track would have all of the tracks sent to it processed and sent to the mix together. The volumes of the tracks comming from the reverb aux output to the final mix would be based on how much of the "dry" track was sent to the reverb aux changing the mix significantly. Is this the same in Pro Tools?

  • how do you connect your amp and stompboxes to pro tools?

  • does it matter if u have one monator

  • Thanks Man,I`m Thinking On Starting Out With A Free Pro Tools,,Thank you,Keith

  • how do you make beats

  • Hopefully will get into Pro Tools sometime. Thanks for the tut.

  • Mic Im trying to hook my controller up to hear my trilian bass mod,,,in the midi do i conect the m-audio to mbox2 or do i conect mbox to m-audio

  • how do you convert your midi so you can hear sound?

  • How do u move the hook from one place to the other and placeing them all in the right spot

  • I'm having the same problem as Dantovksy666. I'm getting no sound when I try to play, though it does record the notes I play.

  • i have m box 2 pro i need a cd sofware and driver for windows

can u please help me :)

  • So I downloaded Pro tools 8 LE and I am new to the whole thing so here is my question. Why cant I just make music? Why does it have to be so hard to get started? I launch Pro tools on my PC with windows 7 and it tells me I need some digidesign hardware bullshit. I just want to simply make music using the standard mouse and keyboard I already have. I thought the pro tools software would be good enough and I would be able to jump right in no prob. So can it be done without midi or digidesign shit?

  • @Beauweedaful lmms is a free open source programme similar to fl studio.if you want free, you could try that pairing it with free vst'i (virtual instruments).DSK makes good virtual synths and beatboxes.

it's for windows aswell, not just linux.

  • @Beauweedaful no, you have to buy a mbox interface, they do that so people can't just download it for free because they're cheapskates.

  • -so I'm having troubles configuring the midi studio...

  • Hey man I have a little question....I use an m-audio keyrig 49 and it's connected via usb so its not connected through the mbox

  • when I record 1 and 2, i can't record track 3 and for and i have to skip to 4,5 and so on, does the bus settings have anything to do with that and how can I put it back to factory settings?

  • is there any way to separate the left and right of the same track? i want to mute the right (drums) of a track and keep the left (bass and strings) any help is appreciated!

  • i watched this and have the green light like my midi is working, but I have no sound. I think yours on this video was the same way. Not sure if you went further with that in another video or not, but I haven't found it yet. I am new to youtube, protools and my M-Audio KeyRig25. Any advice or directions you could point me in would be awesome!! and what you have done so far is also appreciated!!.

  • i have no sounds either! its frustrating!!!! and confusing!!

  • thanks you where a big help

  • dude you need to drink you water or some before you start videos!! lol swallowing spit all through the video is nasty

  • Hey man, Do you need to hook up midi-out on the mbox to the midi-in on the controller? Does it matter if you do not complete the loop? I only have 1 midi cable right now, but I will go buy another if it is necessary.

I currently have my keyboard's out to the mbox's in.

Thanks a lot for the help.

  • Dude im gonna Kill My Self Because You're taking too long to talk. And You Sound like one of those fake Indian Guys who try to sell you fake Penis Enlargement Products On the net.

  • Dude I wanna Make beats like Alchemist. Show Me how to make beats like ALC. If you know who that is.

  • Shut up.

  • @HendyZero2

    to do list:

    1. invest in a top quality studio.

    2. get some production talent.

    3. patience is probably good.

    4. lots of samples.

    5. realise you'll never be any good.

    6. quit.

  • @HendyZero2 get a peice of vintage gear. the new shit will just sucks! MPC 3000 or 60 sp 1200 or a asr 10. alchemist uses a asr. I hope your not trying to do this on fl studio lol

  • micah from mira mesa high

  • @yungirie619

YES! Lives across the street from kenny! And shops at Wal Mart for groceries. That's him!!

  • dude im fina hit him up

im jalon do u no me

  • Nah I don't know you. I was messing with you cause this guy says his name is Micah. Just playin with you. haha.

I wish I knew this guy though cause I need LOADS of help with Pro Tools.

  • i have a axiom 61 midi controller but it wont let me start pro tools m-powered w. it WHAT SHOULD I DO PLEASE REPLY!

  • @THIZDUDEIZFINE11 you have to have a m-powered approved audio interface to open m-powered protools. You axiom is not an audio interface...it's a midi interface. There is a list on the digidesign website for approved interfaces for m-powered protools. In fact protools wont open at all without a digidesign audio interface.

  • dude u sound like this guy i kno his name is micah

    weird

  • DUDE!!! That IS MICAH!!!

  • apparently its working... not like your 12 subscribers and no views.

  • i didnt say the video was bad just your sinuses lol

  • Hey mic1, just ignore these ignorant dudes/remarks man.. (first) who cares about sinuses and (second) finds bad sinuses are "lol"... For me you're PT vids are tops, no matter what!

  • @mic1one haha

  • I guess the answer to " why do you ask these totally irrelevant questions" is that you are lost yourself..!

  • im not lost ..however unprecedented and unrecognized i am there is a talent within

this however isn't ..even though i wasn't even attacking the video just the delivery articulation and annunciation fair enough it was slightly over the top and not obviously a creative criticism your opinion wasn't needed

  • very good. thank you! was an excellent walkthrough!

  • Question!! I just got Pro Tools 8: M-Powered Essential. And my question is: Do you need an interface to operate pro tools? I'm new to this, but I've used FL Studio with a Keyboard Midi. Can I use my keyboard midi for pro tools?

  • Yes. You very much need the hardware to just open the program.

  • @richiej876: Well I can still open and record and stuff, but why need an interface??

  • wait are you fo real?? you got to open pro tools without it stopping you and asking for the hardware?

  • @richiej876: From time to time, I have this problem that says something about the M-Audio USB ASIO driver, so it's unable to open, then i go to FL Studio and change the audio settings then it's able to open sometimes. But it opens and i edited some vocals. Maybe it opens for me because I have the M-Audio Vocal Studio. You know, the one that comes with the mic and Pro Tools? And then i had to install the Fast Track Pro and stuff. But does that answer your question?

  • I downloaded the pro tools full version for free so all i got was the software. can get M-Audio Vocal Studio online without buying the mic and pro tools software?

  • @richiej876: The box saysM-Audio Vocal Studio, but the version of the pro tools I have is: Pro Tools M-Powered Essential. And I think you can download the program, but idk.

  • ok.. thanks

  • You would need an interface (breakout box) if you want to record guitars or analogue keyboards into your computer. The interface converts analogue signal to digital signal.

  • well I have fast track pro. and i still need an interace even if i have a midi keyboard?

  • Yes, if you bought PT8 M-Powered you will need a M-Audio, protools compatible interface. If you want something cheap go with the FireWire Solo and there are several different options. Let me know if you have anymore questions. I use M-Audio ProTools as well. Good Luck

  • @OfficialBillSkillz: Well how come I can still record? Maybe because I have a M-Audio mic?? I can very much still operate it. But another question. why do you need an interface??

  • What exactly do you mean?

  • @cortezforever: I have Pro Tools M-Powered that came with my M-Audio Mic. So does that means i need a interface. Well i installed a fast track driver, so maybe i don't need it, because i installed that. And for producing on pro tools. how can i do that? Can I use my Casio CTK-720 Keyboard to operate pro tools instruments?

  • In your case the interface components to convert the analogue signal (your voice etc) to digital, are inside your microphone. So you don't need another interface just for that, but you will need an additional interface/soundcard to record your casio as audio and/or midi.

You forgot to say hi and thank you. Subscribe pleeease. I want to make it to 10 : )

  • Ok... Thanks. but you can to my aid! lol. But I get it now. But it's weird b/c I don't need this stuff to use FL Studio!

  • That's because fruity loops is a vst (virtual studio technology). So in other words vsts are like a physical keyboard but it is on your computer therefore you need no interface to convert analogue (physical hardware keyboard/guitar) signal to digital signal, because it's already in digital in the form of your vst which would be in your case fruity loops. Did you sub me?

  • when i try 2 play back i cant hear anything out my monitors or headphones...all the cables are set-up correctly, i think its settings in pro-tools. do u have any advice?

  • i need to synch up my keyboard to protools so that i can properly sequence a beat...help

  • THanks dude, but I still don't get busses...doh! What are they and when, how do you use?

  • I have a korg radias :P

  • is the midi uno a bad midi to use ??

  • whats ya email address?

  • you can email me from my youtube channel, I receive updates on my real email.

  • I have my XP 80 hooked up to my MBox 2 pro LE 8.0 but I'm getting no signal. You lost me with the addition of the Midi-Sport 2x2, and the Axiom 25. I have both of these items as well but my little Pea Brain

can only handle one Midi hook-up at a time. In the input Port: area should I have Digidesign MBox 2 Pro Midi and In the Output POrt: Should I also have

Digidesign MBox 2 Pro Midi. In spite of the fact that I am lost is no reflection on you I know you're doing a great job. I'm a newbie.

  • Phew, I've got a little touch of altitude sickness from the steep learning curve but otherwise that was very helpful, thank you very much.

    Tony

  • great help man
