  • If I may, what linux distros have you tried and what are you using ? I tried Redhat 7.2 (a little), Slackware 10.xx, suse 10.x (maybe 0 or 1) tired gentoo but never succeded a stage 1 install because they removed it (from portage maybe, i tried 2007.0 and 2008.0), zenwalk, ubuntu, lycoris, xandros... I liked slackware but I dont love it because of lack of package and of a big repository like Debian's... What debian version do you recomand me to install 508 or 6.0.0 ?

  • @DexterPaul23 sorry for the late reply.. I can honestly say I've at least installed and tinkered with the vast majority of linux distributions.. everything from Arch to Zenwalk (see what I did there? tee hee, I'm so clever). Though, in terms of distributions I've actually used for long periods, I mostly have experience with Archlinux, Pardus, Debian, Gentoo, and Slackware.

My suggestion to you in regards to your Debian version question.. you'd probably be best running the current 'stable': 6.0.

  • @igneousphantom Now what linux disto(s) are you using ? Or at least the mostly of time.

  • @DexterPaul23 For a desktop, I like Arch because it's bleeding-edge, and it has a huge supplemental repository of software packaged by users (made successful by how trivial it is to make your own packages)..

Though, at my job, I use Debian almost exclusively on our infrastructure: mainly because of it's reliability/predictability, but also because it runs on so many different architectures. Managing 128-core SPARC boxes, or embedded ARM systems with the exact same userland is quite nice.

  • Thank you for the videos, also for the kernel compilation videos ! I ask you if possible to install debian with acceleration (to play games with wine and cedega) on a system with Nvidia graphic card, for example a GT... BTW, what is your system configuration ? I mean processor and graphic card...

  • @DexterPaul23 You're welcome. I really should make some more videos soon.. But yeah, you could definitely set up Debian to use the proprietary nvidia driver for gaming. In regards to the question about my PC specs: In this video, it was a amd 3700+ san diego running at 2.5ghz, 2gb of 2-2-2-5 DDR400 ram, and an nvidia 7600gt. Mind you, that's an old system, and I've changed boxes (and linux distributions) since then, but at the time of recording that's what I was using.

  • I love this! Is it possible to build this system for a live cd?

  • This is very helpful will follow your instruction on my thinkpad T42. I like it light and fast, if things go well may upgrade to LXDE. Again thanks for a nice video.

  • im having a small problem i got everything working using fluxbox but i deicded to instal lxde and none of my windows have a border also without touching anything the window moves down and to the right every 5 seconds im not sure wtf is wrong...perhaps cuz im running it via qemu ive editded .xinitrc and put exec startfluxbox but that dosent do shit any ideas? is lxde not good to use?

  • If the issue only occurs using lxde then I'd have to guess the culprit is lxde. Try running just openbox alone via exec openbox-session in your ~/.xinitrc.

Also keep in mind this video is nearing two years old and the instructions I've provided may need a bit of tweaking.

In regards to startfluxbox.. What does the output of "file $(which startfluxbox);ls -l $(which startfluxbox)" say?

  • hi dude, thanks for the effort, we need more people like you.

    take care.

  • you're the exact opposite of dumb, and you've just de-mystified a process for me that i've been fearing for the last 10 or so years. you have my huge thanks. :)

  • Great video, thank you for sharing your knowledge of Debian.

  • Such a great video I followed this tutorial to the tee and got around 81 mb of memory being used which is great! Thanks for the tips!

  • one question do you use wireless or ethernet?

I seem to have problem with connecting to network while installing.....

By the way great video. Can't wait until your tutorial comes out. Keep up with good work!

  • Igneous, good job.

Keep up the good work, I believe this videos will help many people.

  • thank you very much. I'm going to start producing some more tutorials soon. I've just been swamped with work. Thank you very much for your encouragement :)

Keep up making excellent videos, I really enjoy them.

I believe it will help many people.

  • I have watched all 3 videos with pleasure. I have left the Windows world permanently and wanted to run Debian, but my hair almost fell out cause I didnt know what to do.

Thanks to your video I am one step closer to running Debian.

  • awesome ! btw what was that program which shows up system resources in the console ? (towards the end of the video)

  • that, my good sir, is htop.

  • Thank You!

Also you can save some more space and boot up time by not selecting even 'Standard System' at install and apt-getting required stuff after the first boot.

  • i'm glad you made these, but I had to put a twin jet booster with nitros gas on my audio to hear you. I watched all 3 and I know, I should be able to follow. You made it simple.

    thanks

    your a GEM!!!

  • Heh yeah, sorry about the audio. I'm saving up to get a real podcasting setup. After that my audio quality will probably be much better than most of youtube.

Anyways, I'm glad I could help, if you hit any snags along the way, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to help you along.
