Rika was created to represent Bern on the gameboard as her piece, and she also represented Bern when she was a human, and Takano represents Lambda, who tortured Bern back when she was a human. That's why Takano tortures Rika in Higurashi, because it's created in the likeness of Bern and Lambda's scenario. Sorry if I didn't explain that well enough, it's relatively complicated.

For example, "Higurashi was not a fight between Lambda and Rika, BUT between Lambda and Featherine". Or, one theory is saying, that there was a Meta-Rika (like Meta-Battler) and that SHE became, troughout the game, Frederica Bernkastel.

@TengenToppaDrill actually Lamba says that Bern was not a witch but a piece who got trapped into a logic error instead of her master. I'm nearly certain that the former game (Higurashi) was between Featherine & Lamba, where Featherine pieces were Hanyuu & Rika, while Lambda piece was Takano. When Featherine grow bored of the game she abandoned it, trapping Rika into it. Rika achieved a miracle to escape the logic error, thus becaming the "With of Miracles".

So far, they've thrown in a good portion of the BGM from the visual novel. I still love how they used rahu goldenslayer before the end of each episode when showing off the deaths...nothing compares to the actual piece when it plays in the game (at the exact same moments) but it's a nice touch.
