And now they're trying to outlaw the teaching of evolution in Tennessee once again, proving conclusively that the danger for christian fundamentalists is not so much that they might be descended from apes, but that they will soon be overtaken by them.

I would like to point out the arguement that Lewis Black made- Genesis is found in the Old Testament, which is the book of the Jewish people. Yet Christians will spend hours ranting on their own interpretation of that book, without even stopping to think- Hey, do the Jews still believe this stuff? I have a number of Jewish friends and relatives, and I know not a one who reads Genesis as if it were a fucking college textbook. Look for Lewis Black's thoughts on Creationism on here, it sums it up.
I'm a Christian believe God created Earth BUT i believe things change over time humans are getting taller which is evolution isnt it? so i dont get the big deal no i dont believe we came from monkeys but thats not the whole theory of evolution is it NO the point is things change over time which is entirely true
You can believe in God--have strong faith--and still question other religious sects (and still believe in science). This is a good documentary. I've been looking for it for a long time. Thanks for the upload. =)
@MrPontiusPilate - evolution cannot be proven as fact. it's a collection of human observations, then inferred explanations for those observations. when it comes down to it, people who believe evolution and people that don't believe evolution are seeing the same things in nature, they just make different inferences based on our own beliefs. whether the secular and "scientifically minded" community like it or not, *****everyone's***** views are skewed by their own beliefs, religious or not.
@SignalFire92 thats bull, evolution is observable and apparent in the fossil record and in dna. you cant claim they have equal status because one has proof the other doesn't
@SignalFire92 Actually evolution has been proven. There is a type of bacteria that feeds on Nylon. Did this bacteria evolve since the invention of Nylon, or did it hang around for thousands of years since the gareden of eden?
no its not i live in tennessee and some is its like that anywere i dont belive in evolution but thats my belief and im offended by you calling it a redneck crap holes most towns are very freindly and very clean and nice but theres always gonna be an area anywere thats a crap hole
The Tennessee law was passed in part because in 1925 scientists did not agree on any particular theory of evolution. This remained true until the 1940s when neo-Darwinism temporarily gained ascendancy. Current theory is nebulous and has no name. See The End of Darwinism by Eugene Windchy.
@luftigus Sir, you are completely wrong. The current theory of Evolution is well accepted in the scientific community, most notably the biological sciences. If you want to state something I suggest you check the facts. You have your beliefs, and no one is trying to shove anything down your throat, so stop shoving yours down mine.
In 1925 most scientists accepted the fact of biological change but not Darwin's explanation of it. That was one of the reasons Tennessee passed a law against the teaching of Darwin's theory. Scopes pretended to have taught it so that local boosters could have a trial as a publicity stunt. The true story of what happened is in Chapter Three, "The Great Scopes Scam," of Eugene Windchy's The End of Darwinism.
funny how it isnt ok to talk about religion, but it's ok to mandate evolution at people. no one's asking anyone to believe either or, but come on, if you're going to push one, at least dont shun the other.
I commented addmoreice with the same comment incase you see it twice on the page. I disagree. Creationism is not unreasonable as long as a good scientific model has been presented as you mentioned evolution does. Granted most Christians have not done this, but I know of atleast one organization that has. (Reasons to Believe) The model is complete and can be compared with evolution side by side if you are willing to do so. Whether or not the model is reasonable will be for you to decide:-)
the model is _not_ complete. it's not even a model.
There are basically two types of articles about evolution on there site.
theistic evolution. ie, god uses evolution but he molded it just like he can mold ANY natural process (as the thinking goes) and so made it do what he wanted in order for us to develop.
fair enough, no contradictions with science. though it's NOT science (not falsifiable).
and the 'evolution is a myth! god dun it!' type article.
heck, just for fun hit there 'what we believe' page. in it they proudly proclaim they believe the scriptures are correct, and that of course science will reflect this....when taken into proper perspective.
what is this perspective?
is it the one normally used? ie, the things in the bible we KNOW to be false (and can no longer ignore) such as the flat earth where simply miss translations while the parts that the ignorant masses want to cherish despite the evidence are correct? THAT perspective?
You obviously didn't check out their model because you haven't correctly reflected what they believe. Their complete model is in the book "Origins of Life", which is by all means scientific. They don't have a theistic evolution model because they reject it, so you clearly didnt read into it. Furthermore they never just say evolution is a myth and leave it at that, as shown by the model. Then you bring up the earth being flat according to the bible with no proof, just a blanket statement.
these are a combination of 'the world is flat', 'the world is a flat circle', and 'the world does not move and is fixed'.
all of these are wrong. the response is invariable either ignoring the evidence of the world (ala flat earthers) OR ignoring the bible and claiming it's allegorical (so why not take creation the same way?)
i don't address there so called 'scientific model' because it's not scientific and it's not presented. there for purchase stuff is sure. but i don't pay people so i can show there wrong. there is an infinite amount of wrong and a limited amount of my money.
want to explain to me how they use SCIENCE (which works on methodological naturalism and hence can never claim ANYTHING aye or nay about supernatural events) is used to support a supernatural event?
thats fine. be aware that i _allways_ repost in the entirety these 'private message debates' on a website called 'league of reason' google that to see what i'm talking about.
if your accepting of that then feel free to send me posts. i have nothing to hide and i am perfectly willing to discuss the 'evidence' of the creation claims. be aware your going to have to substantiate any scientific claims with pier reviewed science.
if not we can just do it here openly where anyone can see.
explain to me (again i asked this) how there 'model' explains: nucleic acid information storage ubiquity, SINEs, LINEs, ERV's, ring species, atavisms, ambiguous proteins, observed speciation events, the combined confirmed hierarchical mapping of embryology, phenotype mapping, genetic mapping, ambiguous protein mapping. oh and the FIVE SPECIES A WEEK we gene map on average. all that agrees with evolution?
i dont know any Christians demanding creationism to be taught in schools, though im sure there may be some out there. I dont think its a matter of what is taugh at schools, its what's acceptable. Its not acceptable to talk about creationism in schools because it's "forcing" it on people who dont believe in it, yet Christians have to sit through classes about evolution and no one cares what theyre being forced to do.Almost as if people who arent religiously minded are held higher than those who are.
The issue is not about teaching creationism in a comparitive religion, religious philosophy or religious history class. It is where the proponents are attempting to have it or other psuedo-science included in the science curriculum.
evolution is science. it's a theory that accurately explains the facts of evolution (the facts are that species have changed and diverged over time, the theory EXPLAINS these facts).
creationism is not science, it is not falsifiable, it has no mechanism, and does not explain ANY of the known facts.
as philosophy it's silly but acceptable to be discussed. as science it fails in every definition of what science IS.
I agree, creationism cannot, and should not be treated as any kind of science. As for it being treated as being 100% true, I dont necessarily, but I can understand the importance of handling evolution with proper scientific method. If there is possible evidence to something, than by all means, let it be considered. It bothers me when it is taken as absolute, without any allowance of any other idea.
As a firm believer in creationism myself, I can make concessions to some ideas of evolution, such as adaption, to an extent. Im aware that not all advocates of creationism are as allowing as that, and its not hard to see where the arguments begin. But its when, for creationists like me are approached with hard statements of there being ABSOLUTELY no possibility of there being intelligent design, and even having our intelligence questioned.
I dont care what everyone thinks about intelligent design, I care that it isnt allowed to be considered true. I respect peoples firm belief in science Id like to be respected for my belief. However ludicrous the theory of creationism may sound to others, let me have it my way, Ill gladly let you have it yours.
and thats fine. but don't expect your belief to be taught in schools nor for it to be considered the 'correct' answer when we try and base decisions on the evidence.
if someone told you that you had to consider the idea of a flat earth when doing trajectories for NASA you would laugh your ass off. you know it's not correct and further you know it would be dangerous to do so. evolution plays as important a roll in virology, biological management, and medical research.
I am a Christian as well, and I commend you for that faith that you hold. I messaged the other guys on the page about a good scientific creation model that is out there. It was presented by Reasons to Believe, so if you are interested feel free to check it out. I believe that it will help you reconcile your religious beliefs that seem to be contradictory to science.
i have NO faith. provide evidence i will stop accepting evolution on the dime. faith is what you have when you HAVE no evidence.
explain to me how Reasons to Believe provides a scientific argument for why: nucleic acid is used to carry all information systems in every organism on the planet. common decent REQUIRES this to be so. it's an obvious prediction that has been upheld in every regard.
RtB's answer? 'god wanted it that way'
that really is there answer to all biological questions.

It came from Herbert Spencer. But Darwin used it in later editions. Which he subsequently regretted very much given the misuse/abuse of the phrase.
