  • Awesome job! Thanks so much from all us film noir aficionados!

  • a masterpiece

  • Stunning. You have amazing vision. This is certainly a tribute video that does justice to what it honours. Again, stunning.

  • i just felt love. thanks

  • MUSIC- Angel by Massive Attack

  • Wow, one can see what a great deal of effort went into it. Entrancing.

  • This was awesome. Great Job!

  • Enjoyed this at Noir City last Friday. Nice work, and the audience dug it.

  • This is one of the best mashups I've ever seen on Youtube. I really mean that. Fantastic song choice, fantastic film choices, fantastic mixing. 13 people need to be chased through the sewers.

  • the music reminds me bit of Madonna's "I Want You"

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow Massive Attack. It's off their album Mezzanine. It's worth a listen.

  • Great job! Saw on the big screen at the Castro Theatre :)

Good choice of music as well...

  • One of the greatest videos on youtube. I'm proud of the fact that I recognized almost all of the films.

  • Excellent work. Thank you for posting.

  • The best thing on Youtube by far.

  • I cannot praise this video enough, nor the incredible amount of time and effort that must have gone into it. I love film noir, and no tribute will ever bring out it's mood, it's greatness, or it's coolness better than your video here. True class. Thank you RubyTuesday717!

  • RubyTuesday17, I can't thank you enough for this FANTASTIC homage! The clips, the music, the editing...will be watching and re-watching!!!!

  • Fantastic,simply fantastic! Congratulations..

  • This is just so brilliant - can't even begin to express how much I admire this. The edit is perfect and the little things you did with it (like the last few minutes of clips revealing a final descent - all the walking down staircases and elevators going down etc) are perfect. You should be a film-maker or editor. If you aren't already.

  • COOL COMP!!!

  • Terrific video! For my homage to Alfred Hitchcock, click on my name or the icon on the left.

  • Whats the name of the movie at 0:56 - 0:57? The one with the woman blowing out the smoke?

  • @immanueldk92 , "Out Of The Past" (1947).

  • which one is the one with the slide from 1:22?

  • @ikszorn , "The Lady From Shanghai" (1948).

  • @Muirmaiden Thanks! And which one is at 0:56, with two men, one smoking?

  • @ikszorn rather 0:55

  • @ikszorn and both smoking:)

  • @ikszorn , hmm, that one I'm not sure of - maybe "Elevator To The Gallows" (1958). Not 100% sure though.

  • This is awesome. I could watch it all night. Film noir, whatever it may be, may be Hollywood's greatest contribution to cinema art. If you ever do another similar video, I have requests (for films to use I mean :)

  • Brilliant. Fucking brilliant.

  • How to make film noir...

    1. Fit a graduated grey filter over your cameras lens.

    2. Process your film for maximum contrast.

    3. Make it in any language as long as its not English.

    4. Always have a script that makes no sense, has no beginning, no middle, and no end.

    5. Include as much sex as possible, with both parties involved either looking as bored as possible, or eating food off of each others bodies.

    6. Talk about Nazi's at the press launch.

    7. Always have a dwarf or albino in your film.

  • @beachhutblues I don't get it. You surely mean how to NOT make film noir?

  • @beachhutblues What the crap? It's not even funny.

  • Love this! This is awesome. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Fantastic. Mesmerizing. I saw images I've never seen. Please give us a list of the films you pulled from for reference. Incredible job. The music, editing and choice of shots is flawless.

  • There is nothing sicker, more perverted, and more enjoyable than film noir. Thank you for presenting this tribute to celluloid darkness.

  • Honestly, I haven't seen a better tribute to film noir. Profound--the choice of music, the syncopation, the timing of the clips, everything. Great job!

  • ah

    back when women were women

    and men were men

    not the other way around

  • This is brilliantly put together RubyTuesday, it must have taken ages but it's good to see so many of us appreciate what you've done - must make it all worthwhile.

I run a film club in Abu Dhabi and we have just started 10 weeks of looking at film noir, and to support it I have a group on Facebook, I am posting this on the group page there.

Thanks again for this - superb.

  • Amazing! I am so impressed with your tribute.

  • Where's Rafifi? Breathless? Le Cercle Rouge? Not a big fan of foreign films?

  • @Dylonator well since none of those qualify as classic film noir, which is clearly the standard for this amazing tribute, let's try and keep from getting all self-important.

  • @leonefan88 Rafifi isn't classic film noir? I've never heard that before 0.o

  • @Dylonator well since it's considered one of the first major heist films and doesn't possess really any of the characteristics of a classic noir other than the most cursory of aesthetics ,whether or not it can be considered film noir is debatable, I've seen it listed as both but more often as a heist film which is simply grouped in with noir for better or worse.

  • Going to show this at my media-school tomorrow

  • Quite possibly the best video on YouTube. Everything about it is perfect, from your hitting the beat to the voiceovers (especially Uncle Charlie's from my all-time favorite noir, Shadow of a Doubt).

You got just about all my favorite noirs, too. Awesome.

  • Wow, this is fantastic! Well done; all your hard work really paid off. What a great video!

  • thanks!!!

  • Lana Turner is mesmerizing 2:20

  • Very well done... a great tribute to a great genre!!!

  • Gotta love The Night of the Hunter.

  • Magnificent.

  • Wow, obviously a lot of work went into this. Beautiful job!

  • Watched this yet again and it seems to get better. Very, very good editing.

  • Nice tribute to the genre, I did one myself, in the form of a short film called, "The Third Defenestration", in which I try to include as many of the classic noir elements I can, in only seven minutes. You can find it on my channel.

I actually came across this video while editing, when I was trying to find a soundtrack(I ended up using "The Killing") by a link from a page selling noir soundtracks. I see from the comments this is often used as an introduction to the genre, I think that's good.

  • I CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF THIS VIDEO! THANX FOR MAKING ;-)

  • Wow. Well done Rudy! I recognised most, but what was the film with the guy in the gas mask?

  • @LindyLoon It's "Criss Cross" with Burt Lancaster, Yvonne De Carlo and Dan Duryea. Great film.

  • My instructor for "Intro to Film and Media" showed this as the lead-in for our section on Film Noir. One of the films we watched was Orson Wells "Touch of Evil." Really love your tribute. Seems to capture the feeling of "film noir."

  • I've never add anything to my list of favorites. I'm gonna do it now. I love this video, it's fantastic, man. Film noir rules.

  • That blew my mind! Thank you, Ruby Tuesday717.

  • a masterpiece.... congratulations!!...

  • Wow! Amazing job. One of the best tributes I have seen, job well done.

  • Great compilation! :) Thank you!

If you like Film Noir, check out this student film: watch?v=9X0sT_f8WaQ

  • FABULOUS piece of work. Wonderful! Thanks a million!

  • First saw this at Noir City SF, and it's still marvelous!!!

  • Nice work you inspired me :) to start editing

  • Just started working on an independetn Noire Film. This video is proving to be great for reference! Cheers for the upload!

  • @PYeah99 hows your noir coming ?

  • @megamatt53 4 months late, but it went very well thank you. It's started doing the rounds in Film festivals :) It's been to a local film fest and is going to the London Short Film festival :)

  • My Top-10 Film Noir list: 1. Nightmare Alley 2. Touch of Evil 3. Out of the Past 4. The Set-Up 5. Champion 6. Pursued (a western and noir hybrid) 7. Raw Deal 8. The Prowler 9. Moonrise 10. The Killing

  • fucking brillant

  • Absolutely gorgeous...music, choice of scenes, movies....many kudos

  • Nice compilation.

  • Exellent editing... a real feast and tribute to those fabulous actors and directors...

  • thumbs up if ur here cuz u bought L.A. Noir

  • Awesome editing job! And thank you so much for listing the films!

  • Brava.

  • 100,000 views!! Couldn't have done it without you guys! Love you all, thanks for watching!!

  • @RubyTuesday717 This probably the best video on youtube. Brilliant editing.

  • @RubyTuesday717 I think a 100 of those views are mine !!

  • @RubyTuesday717

    You're very welcome Ruby:D

Ya know this video is on my faves link.

  • That's an amazing edit!

  • I've just watched this 3 times in a row...

A fantastic tribute & very comprehensive collection of Film Noirs. 5***.

  • Excellent, excellent tribute! Well done RubyTuesday!

  • I love it. Femme Fatale's, Thug's, Hot Men, Tough guy's, Dark Lady's, et al....!!!!

  • Most of the time when people do tributes on youtube for anything, it always end up being corny for whatever reason. But I love this tribute to all films noir- I think this is composed very cleverly :)

  • A lot of very bad things happening to people who probably deserve it.

  • amazing editing!! great video!! thanks for sharing :)

  • Stumbled across this while searching for trailer for The Killers. WOW!! Thank you for all the time and effort you devoted to this project. Absolutely brilliant!

  • Hey guys, I have a question, does anyone know any good film noirs? Im new to this movie genre. Thx!

  • @poisonpoisoning, here's some recommendations to start with: Double Indemnity (1944) Laura (1944) The Killers (1946) Out Of The Past (1947) Kiss Of Death (1947) The Maltese Falcon (1941) Murder, My Sweet (1944) In A Lonely Place (1950) Gilda (1946) The Big Heat (1953) The Big Sleep (1946) Scarlet Street (1945) Touch Of Evil (1958)
  • @Muirmaiden Omg, thanks!

  • Oh, oh, oh!!!! Chills and amazement! Best film noir tribute ever.

  • I meant to say that I posted it on Facebook. Sorry. And thanks again....lovely work!

  • I've watched this at least ten times...never fails to thrill.....I posted it on You Tube...how strange that the music of this current band lends itself so well to the images of classic film.

  • Brilliantly compiled and edited. Claire Trevor's face reflected in the clock in "Raw Deal", would have been a nice touch but hey, we can't have everything!

  • I watch this video every few weeks. It never gets old and the music is perfect.

  • totally misplaced music

  • Anyone know what film that scene at 2:02 with the gunshot is?

  • well done!

  • excellent ! !!!

  • I revisited this video this morning after talking about film noir with a friend yesterday. (She's new to the genre) I first saw it at Noir City 8 and was stunned by how utterly beautiful and brilliant executed this video was/is! It still put a huge smile on my face after reviewing it today. It felt just like the first time I saw it! Excited, breathless and mesmerized! Fantastic work! I hope to see more of your work in the future! All the best to you!

  • Saw this at my film club, wasn't expecting anything special coming from class, but holy crap, this had me on the edge of my seat.

  • Very nice work, RubyT, I know how much time must have been put in. Thanks for the gift, and sharing your passion.

  • Wow, this is superbly edited. I'm just starting to get interested in flim noir and this is a nice little introduction. :)

  • I have to say my two favorites "The Naked City" and "Born To Kill" are sadly missing. But other than that great video!!!

  • @TheMaskedJohnson Yeah, I tried to do as many noirs as I could get my hands on, but not all and this isn't meant to be a video catalogue of all the noirs ever made. I only saw BORN TO KILL a year after uploading this video (and had I seen it I surely would've included it; it actually made the cut in my SF Crime video, which you can check out). And I have not seen THE NAKED CITY.

  • This was absolutely amazing. I'm making a film noir video for my class and I'm submitting this to my whole team for inspiration.

  • This is absolutely, stunningly, gorgeously amazing! Oh god I love it SO MUCH.

  • ʞ9ɟıqɾʞɾ0p7=ʌ¿ɥɔʇɐʍ/ɯoɔ˙ǝqnʇnoʎ˙ʍʍʍ//:dʇʇɥ „uɐɯʞɔos„ pǝןןɐɔ ɹıou ɯןıɟ ʇɹoɥs ʎɯ ʇno ʞɔǝɥɔ

  • What is the name of the movie from 2:11 to 2:15

  • @mashutka3, scenes from two films - "The Letter" starring Bette Davis and "Double Indemnity" starring Barbara Stanwyck.

  • @mashutka3 I think what you are seeing at that time is intercutting from two different films: The Letter (Bette Davis) and Double Indemnity (Barbara Stanwyck.)

  • i do film studies at university and this semester its film noir. Couldn't be happier. this is awesome, nice work

  • Comment removed

  • @indieguyy22 It's from THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (1950, John Huston)

  • fucking amazing

  • this was shown in our art class a week ago.

  • @artchel1 Really? It's so cool to get these messages that this was shown at schools; I've gotten film classes, sociology classes and now art classes. Was it a sort of media art class or something?

  • @RubyTuesday717

oh no. it was just a basic art class like...painting and stuff. we have to draw a dark picture sketch so our teacher showed us this to get the idea and stuff.

when I saw this, man! this is great!!! I love it

  • @RubyTuesday717 Art Class? TCM should be showing this.

  • Well done.

  • Beautifully done....so glad I stumbled across this! Any others available or in the works?

  • Absolutely super job putting these together. Well done RT717.

  • Oh, my goodness, this is WONDERFUL. It's clear you love this genre as mcuh as I do. Make another! Make another!

  • Ma'am I have now seen all but two of the films in your video, and over a hundred and fifty others; mostly lesser quality, but B gems arent all that rare. If you have the time, I'd like to discuss the films in the most efficient manor possibly and get to know another noir enthusiast. My metropolis is devoid. The name is Bradley William Cole from Toronto and I have Lillian Gish as my facebook display. We can begin discussion there or if youd prefer to PM me with another method, I'm listening.

  • Amazing work...thanks!

  • Wow, what a treat! Thanks!

  • Amazing this is great hel for a role I'm playing in a film Noir styled musical so seeing this really helps firm up my character. ;D Being a possibly deranged ex-cop now PI is hard.

  • Who's that girl at 1:09?

I've got to see more of her.

  • @brianallancobb That's Martha Vickers in THE BIG SLEEP. Unfortunately she's not in many memorable movies, and it's rumored she was so good in Hawks' comedy noir that many of her scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

  • @RubyTuesday717

Thanks you. Does she play the general's other daughter? (The one not played by Betty Bacall?)

    Pause while I google... :-)

  • @RubyTuesday717 why wouldn't they include many of her scenes if she was so good in it?

  • @TheYella20 Because the studio's biggest reason for making this movie was to recapture the Bogart/Bacall magic, and if it meant cutting other people's roles down to make room for their chemistry, they would do it. Personally, I think they failed; Dorothy Malone's cameo as the bookstore keeper packs more sparks than any dialogue about horse racing.

  • @RubyTuesday717 I thoroughly agree with you. The bookstore scene was awesome. Funny how in the book it was completely different. Big Sleep is still my favorite of the Hard boiled detective films I've seen.

  • Absolutely stunning.

I love Film Noir, but even if I didn't I'd still have to admit that this was one of the best movie compilation videos on youtube.

  • Out of all the fan made tribute videos I have come across on the web, this is one I actually consider a masterpiece. well done and thank you!

  • Great job! My favourite video on youtube!!

  • staggering work...im just blown away

  • thank you, rubytuesday, for this magnificent montage of classic film noir. it's one of my favorites - watch it every week.

  • Still loving this video - and that's not likely to change.

  • The two most important words on youtube are "Ruby" and "Tuesday717"

  • Well done Sir :-)

  • @93Miro I think you mean Miss. ;)

  • @RubyTuesday717 My apologies miss :-)

  • That is one cool video, editing and music in perfect unison...and Rita Hayworth at 1:30 is so incredibly hot.

  • WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

  • This editting is just beyond amazing! Must have taken you forever! Really REALLY nice!!

  • Awesome compilation.

Does anyone know the film at 5:55 - with the guy falling down, landing in front of and looking right in to the camera?

  • @BylerTarton00 That's Billy Wilder's masterpiece ACE IN THE HOLE.

  • That was absolutely Awesome! Thank you!

  • OK, help me place the actress at 3:19 and 3:50.

  • @pulpculture It's Gaby Rodgers in KISS ME DEADLY

  • @RubyTuesday717 Thanks! Figures the hole in my noir knowledge would be a Mike Hammer movie of all things!

  • Well dun! -- Bravos!!

  • Excellent!

  • What's the one where the guy is shooting with the tommy gun? Amazing video btw!

  • @rpayton13 I'm not quite sure, but the guy at 4:41 is Burt Lancaster in BRUTE FORCE, loosely based on the uprising at Alcatraz Prison.

  • Do you have a favorite noir RubyTuesday? I just started watching a lot of them on your list.

  • @fireoutlaw23 My favorite film of all time is the noir masterpiece IN A LONELY PLACE, which contains the finest performance Humphrey Bogart ever gave. I love it because of how real the characters and their loving but ultimately doomed relationship is portrayed...there aren't enough words to explain why I love it so much. You just have to experience it.

  • This is an amazing video. Any chance that you might post a higher resolution version?

  • What a terrific job! It made me fall all over in love with the genre again!

One thing, I wonder if you could tell me where the scenes 0:39 and 0:56 came from?

  • @0rommel0

0:39 (of the man lighting a cigarette) is from Louis Malle's ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS (a French noir); 0:56 (of a guy taking out a cigarette in a darkened room) is from the same film. It's highly recommended and has a killer jazz score by none other than Miles Davis.

  • I've been coming back three days in a row to watch this video. It's just....

And thank you for the information! I'll definitely check it up! <3
