Salieri asked Constanza over that night in hopes that she would be too frightened to come and he would no longer have to consider Mozart for the royal appointment. Another view is that he wished to harm Mozart for his work by hurting the one he loved most, but he could not go through with it. Therefore he decided to more directly face is rage and burn his cross, disconnecting himself from God, because he felt left behind.
Sorry but there are a mistake in the video, the music that sounds when Stanzi gets nude isn´t Kyrie of the Mass C Minor, is "Qui tollis" of the same mass. Thank you for all.
I really like this movie, but I knew this part was coming up, so I was about to not watch it. But I did anyway, and I just want to thank you for adding the annotations. I appreciated them. :)
Salieri made a pact with god and pledged his chastity in return for musical genius. His asking Mozart's wife to return at night was in a way an act of testing god.He hoped that god will honor his pledge by not letting her submit to his outrageous wish.He wanted one sign of god's mercy and concern for all his prayers. But instead she returns and he finds that god is immoral and cares not a dime for all his solemn promises.God is wild...unprincipled and to his great chagrin...Mozartian.
Experts say that in real life Salieri and Mozart were not at odds, that they were friends. He actually taught Mozart's son. But Holllywood always needs that edge. Of course, the contention makes the movie
Kenneth Branagh was a finalist for the role of Mozart but Forman decided he wanted an America cast. And Meg Tilly was cast as Constanze until she tore a ligament a day before shooting. How different would the film be if these changes didn't occur?
i dont think he ever really had any intention with sleeping with her and he freaked out because he didnt think it would have gotten that far, its why he kind of breaks
to be clear i think this movie up until this point primarily focuses on his believing he can earn musical talent from god. i think that he was trying to make a deal with god, and at her arrival he could hear god kind of saying "do what you will, i will not give you what you ask".
i think the whole point was him deciding to have broken his vow with god (the one he made to be a famous composer). it wasnt so much about him wanting to sleep with her as much as make that point
@GameApproval Salieri's motivation i think was just to prove to himself that he could take his first immoral step in trying to undermine their marriage and maybe ruin that part of Wolfgang's life.
I Believe he WANTED to sleep with her but at the last moment the remnants of his morality and the shock at what he was doing stopped him.
But His jealous was such that any subtle damage he could do to Amadeus was a victory for him.
I loved how Salieri heard all the pieces he was looking through in his head and the music played. One of my favorite scenes in the movie.I wish I could read music like that. That is a SPECIAL talent
i think people misunderstand this scene, it had nothing to do with 'sex' and everything to do with Salieri taking his first nasty and desperate step toward destroying Mozart. He would do anything to achieve this, even murder.
The deleted scenes of Stanzi and Salieri are interesting, however; it really does take a very different tone of the movie. Instead of Salieri being fueled by pure jealousy, those deleted scenes make him look more of like a sexual predator and a much less sympathetic character. Though, it does explain why she was so hostile towards him when she told him to leave the house towards the end of the movie...
I've never seen most of these scenes before. What a total and complete prick.
Now.. this is not an accurate protrayal of their relationship at all. Salieri and Mozart had a good working relationship. But as a movie character? Total piece of shit.
A producer's belief that a scene is unnecessary is a guy telling you what you want on a sandwich that wasn't meant for his consumption . Vanity overwhelming the creative through the control of purse strings .
I dont really see what Salieri was hopinng to achieve or get from asking her to come back to see him that night. It was clearly not to comply with his sexual desires which he did not have. All of which makes me ask "what did he really want?"

i cant belive the scene between constanze and salieri was deleted from the original film. it explains so much that now thinking back to the original version (even though ive seen it probably 500 times, ) makes sense with the delted scene included. i cant believe that constanze was actually willing to sleep with salieri. its crazy. also shows how crazy and clever salieri was.
Thanks for posting this and labeling the music as it's played - very good idea. I've seen this movie many, many times. I bought the VHS, the DVD, the Director's Cut DVD, and the Director's Cut DVD from Germany, but the "Stanzi crying in bed" scene is so intense, I never even noticed that the Adagio for Glass Harmonica was playing.
i feel like scenes like this are the reason why so many people regarded salieri as villainous (even more so than before) after watching this movie
movies dramatize too much sometimes. mozart and salieri were rivals in their professions, but they composed a work together and salieri even taught one of mozart's sons. sorry for the history lesson i just kind of wiki'd everything -___-
@rhetoricalwishh the whole thing is a popular myth. but it makes a good movie. (even at poor salieris expense - and mozarts too in a way, when you think about it)
@JessaMesss Look at how he jumps when she first adresses him. He's distraught, because he doesn't know how to handle the situation. He has just then finally realized that God does not care for him - nor her - and is willing to humiliate them both, just to keep Mozart on top. He's confused and scared.
How would you feel in a situation like this? You have asked, pleased and even threatened to debase her and yourself... and you get *NOTHING* in return for it.
well the sad thing is that he was so preoccupied with some one else maybe he didn't see the gifts God was trying to hand him, he was to busy being self righteous and selfish, it tells us in the bible that godliness with contentment is great gain, but he displays psycho behavoir from childhood, remember how glad he was that his dad died, and he even supposed God killed him, crazy , but I will say ever time I see this movie my heart moves greatly for him, that poor crazy,
@itried2dohandstnds4u Because he had no idea what to do--had no experience with sex. He spent his life living chastely/deviously. He was used to those two sides of himself being apart. He saw how Mozart could be 'not good,' but create the kind of art Salieri wanted to create. So Salieri figured, why can't I be 'not good' for once? But in the reality of the moment, he freaked & wound up humiliating her. He still managed to abuse his power tho--she probably figured no one would believe her. Argh.
Constanza holds Mozart's music up as Salieri propositions her, almost like a shield. She was the only one who saw who he was allowing himself to become.
@RLviddy It's actually very realistic. Salieri is reading the notes and in his head, he can hear the song. To someone who can't read music, they just see notes. But it's the same for someone who is illiterate. If they were to look at a page in a book, they would just see words they don't understand. But to a person who is literate, they can read the words and in their head, see the story unfolding from the words. Amazing, isn't it? :)
@RLviddy he can read music so he can now weather he can hear it like it is played in the film well that is another story but by being able to read music he knows what Mozart had intended it to sound like.
Lol all you have to do to take off the censor is to turn annotations off. They're just boobs. It's a part of the human body and it shouldn't be censored..
Salieri was a great composer i just dont understand why he hated mozart so much, i mean ik he was envious of his musical talent, and tried to accuse him of molestation. but why?
@scarface12347 Records show that in real life Mozart and Salieri were good colleagues and that no animosity existed between them.
In the historical context however, Salieri did indeed fade, and was largely forgotten while Mozart went on to be concidered to be the Carlsberg of composers: probably the best in the world. :)
This movie has done quite a bit to remind the world of Salieris existence though.
@scarface12347 He spent his life wanting to be like mozart. he worked endlessly and had good virtues. But when he finally met his idol, he was horrified to see that this genius was an obnoxious perv, who could pull masterpieces out the wazoo. Think of it this way. Remember the annoying asshole back in middle school that constantly got on your nerves? Imagine dedicating your life to something that you truly love and then watching him mastering it with ease. It eats you alive.
@catherinesteph hmmm... maybe. But I think it adds to the extreme levels which Salierri will go with his jealousy. If he could have his wife, then he wouldn't want Mozart dead. But his promise to God is what kept him away.
Thanks for posting this. I've never seen this scene although Amadeus is one of my favorite movies. Why would they cut such a pivotal scene from the normal version of the movie?
A note: Maria Theresia von Paradis was (also) a real person. She lost her eyesight at young age, but went on to become a performer and composer. Salieri was indeed one of her teachers.
It is speculated that Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat Major, KV. 456, was written for her.
@AmericanFlag1 It also explains why she later in the movie is so concerned about their income... why she is opposed to Mozart doing The Magic Flute without payment up front.
I don't know what you all have with that scene. In the theatrical version he just walks out of the room and leaves Stanzi alone. So you can say she doesn't like him because he hasn't helped her and Mozart and that's the reason why she wants him to leave at the scene of Mozarts death. But I do have to admit, that new scene is awesome. :-)
@mabeg11

Salieri was a great composer i just dont understand why he hated mozart so much, i mean ik he was envious of his musical talent, and tried to accuse him of molestation. but why?
scarface12347 11 months ago

@williambradford12 (within the movie of course)

F. Murray Abraham is underrated as an actor.

I really didn't like this portion of the director's cut... it changed the dynamics of the characters.

Why would they cut such a pivotal scene from the normal version of the movie?
dpaanlka 1 year ago
A note: Maria Theresia von Paradis was (also) a real person. She lost her eyesight at young age, but went on to become a performer and composer. Salieri was indeed one of her teachers.
It is speculated that Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 18 in B flat Major, KV. 456, was written for her.

This scene here really helps me understand now way Stanzi hate Salieri so much.

@AmericanFlag1 It also explains why she later in the movie is so concerned about their income... why she is opposed to Mozart doing The Magic Flute without payment up front.

@AmericanFlag1
