i would say that the two most compelling characters were Rorsach and Ozymandias. two oposite ends on the spectrum as far as viewing morality-- Black and White versus Nothing but Grey. That's why when Rorsach is confronted by an undeniably grey situation, he pretty much lets himself be killed rather than face it. neither of these two were very compelling

@LordCatharsis It wasn't based on Charlton; it was Charlton, at least for awhile. DC bought the rights to a set of Charlton super hero characters back in the 80's. They were eager to showcase their new purchase, so a rising comic star named Alan Moore purposed a story. They approved it at first, but then realized all these characters were thereby rendered useless. So instead, Moore tweaked a few character details, including their names, and titled it Watchmen instead.

Rorschach is Alan Moore's "realistic" take on The Question, not Batman. All of the Watchmen characters were "conversions" of Charlton Comics characters acquired by DC in the 80s. Roughly speaking - Nite Owl = Blue Beetle, The Comedian = Peacemaker (with a dash of Nick Fury), Dr. Manhatten = Captain Atom, Ozymandias = Thunderbolt

you won't understand the movie unless you read the comic. i saw the movie and didn't fully understand. its more of a drama or tragedy than a super hero movie, definitely not like x men or superman. I'm reading the comic now, and i understand it a lot better now, and i think it was a good adaptation, not the best, but they got really close. its a good story, but the movie doesn't really give you much unless you've read the comic.

I really didn't think the voice of rorschach in the film was very good at all. When i read the graphic novel i heard his voice in my head as being quite low, but more sort of caveman like and basic, as if he didn't really know how to communicate that well. However the rough voice in the film was just a blatant copy of Christian Bales batman voice, i didn't think it fitted that well. Don't get me wrong the film was still very good as was the acting, i just didn't think the voice was at all right.

Actually, Alan Moore said he based all the characters on old Charlton superheroes. I've never read any Charlton superhero comics other than E-Man, so I can't say how recognisable they are.
