There is a negative side, though. When I was living in Japan, I met a black man at my company who had a child with a Japanese woman. She could not handle the stigma of being with a black man or having a half-black child so she left both of them. I thought it was pretty cold that she abandoned her kid and I don't think that would happen in the US. I think that the pressure to conform in Japan is so great that some people can't handle being different.
In general, Japanese people are very nice and polite. This makes foreignors feel more welcome when they are visiting Japan. In some other Asian countries, if you look different, you often get nasty looks and unpleasant stares from people which will make you feel very uncomfortable. I like Japan and I wish I could return to visit some day. I also miss the food.
