  • Andrew sure does like saying "Incoming".

  • mom: *knocks* sweety, can I enter?

me: *wispers* don't be afraid, just walk on in...

  • I wonder if Andrew was aware that he was crafting the greatest song in music history? "Love is a many splintered thing", "flowers on the razor wire" and "I see no purple light crashing out of you" get me every time.

  • still sportin my shirt from this tour, and always get good comments on it

  • Damn I think I just found my next song obsession..

  • She tried to tell me what was right and I had to tell her what was real !!

  • "I tried to tell her about Marx and Engels, God and Angels, I don't really know what for". I think I know this feeling. :)

  • Fuck Lady Kaka, Rhianna and the other bitches. This was the time where real music gets created. That was a music-revolution that will happen never again. Poor generations that was born after that time.

  • bellissima

  • so good to hear on a dance floor-one of my favorites to dance to.

  • EPIC!

  • 3 languages in the top comments so here's number four: arriba arriba Sisters of Mercy are good...that's Spanish, by the way.

  • i love anrew sister of mercy are the best

  • I luv sisters of mercy and this song. Wow one of their BEST along with marian! luv this band . Peace to all the nations. from our band ! the hate ash buried !

  • The word, the music... So brilliant.. If only big artists today made good music.. Well they sometimes get it just right.. It's all just music engineering today.. Repetitive nonsense.. I guess the same could be said about the de-individualizing media today.. I give it 60 years.. In 40 we will hit the computer process limit and 20 after that we will all try to be ourselfs..

  • This Should be VTMB soundtrack!!! Thumbs up who know what i am talk about!

  • A man walks into a bar and gets shot by a lesbian. Only joking.

  • I loove this song haha oh memories

  • Love is a many splintered thing.

  • I was just saying that the "incoming" part sounds like Jaz Coleman. The rest of the vocals sound like David Bowie.

  • That DOES sound like Jaz Coleman growling "incoming!". I know it's not though.

  • @gamage3 Sounds more like David Bowie to me. But I always thought Andrew sounded like David Bowie.

  • Hmm - listened to some other newer Sisters stuff and it is rock/metal nonsense :(

    I knew I shouldn't have done it!

Aaaagh my pure feelings towards the Sisters have been soiled .

I have opened a bad door and it will not close!

  • Me of little faith :s

  • Wow - pleasantly surprised!

I've deliberately not listened to any "new" Sisters stuff for years as I was worried it would be rock/metal nonsense but its not!

  • @sparklechopz This isn't new and you're a poser.

  • @Ranour You're right .... sorry

  • @Ranour sparklechopz is not a poser, mate. Misunderstanding methinks.

  • They opened up with this song at Sonisphere Knebworth ( I think)

I dont listen to them, but my dad told me I should see them (there were no clashes so I thought why not) needless to say they were amazing. From what I heard from my dads CD collection, I thought they were slow, soft and atmospheric. Good for relaxing, didnt expect any moshpits.

3 moshpits in the first song. I'll never make THAT mistake again.

  • I met my current love because of the fact that we both listen to sisters! Thank' s sisters!

  • It's hard to say, but this might be my favorite Sisters song.

    Maybe.

  • @clyhiz This one is a close second behind Lucretia to me.

  • lmao!! it's totally a tie!

  • Wonderful ♥ Great band the Sisters of mercy!!!

  • I would imagine fans of this song might also like Killing Joke's 'Pandemonium' and 'Millenium'. Just saying, if you were unaware of them, it would be a good idea to check them out...

  • i am an old-school sisters fan (my first tattoo was a large merciful release symbol on my left shoulder) and i would have to say that this is the best song on vision thing..

  • i am an old-school sisters fan (my first tattoo was a large merciful release symbol on my left shoulder) and i would have to say that this is the best song on vision thing..

  • 5 people don't look good in ribbons.

  • one of the guys from this band was in the incorporaider HD

  • Love this song. Always makes me dance.

  • Wow.... 5 people hit the thumbs down button on this track.

I don't even want to know what kind of crap they consider to be good music.........

  • Entertaining definately....like.

  • My volume button doesn't go high enough ....ugghh!

  • @fatjopa1 Put it to 11.

  • @fatjopa1 add more speakers to your home, with a mixer and improved cables. I installed studio monitors, had a friend bring his turntables over, the works. Oh hell yeah...

  • red red ribbon.

soooooooooo great thoughts and song, merci.

  • Goozebumpz!!

  • its been a while since a band excited me that much

  • love this song and the art from the divine comedy just perfect

  • Unngghh ;)

  • picture is wrong

  • @Erdelans it's not about the picture, it's about the music.

  • GREAT SONG:LYRICS&MUSIC MATCH EACH OTHER NICELY.

  • there is the saying "cut to ribbons"

makes this dance macabre's politcal edge very sharp.

80% of casualties in war are civilian.

  • One of Von's best in my opinion, cranked up to 12 on the amp ...with a copy of "The Waste Land" by T.S. Eliot in one's back pocket.

  • the redeeming track of Vision Thing......still its not quite Alice is it Eldritch...mmm

  • totally sexy

  • The person screaming "incoming!" sounds a lot like Jaz Coleman..

  • @Ytrearneindre No it doesn't.

  • The New Years eve ball dropped. And took 5 idiots out of the gene pool. Happy New Years!!

  • The best track from their cheesiest album.

  • @RotoPlasmX Why the heck would you call Vision Thing a "cheesy" album! It's far, far from it.

"Ribbons" hearkens back to SOM's earlier stuff more than any other song on the album, but Vision Thing sort of marked a departure from the kind of music that caused the music industry to paste the "goth" label on the band.

  • @sugarandspice4815 Othet than this song, t just sounds corny to me like typical late-80s, American-style hard rock stuff (qualities I also find objectionable in The Cult)....And at its worst, "Vision Thing" sounds too much like bad Billy Idol meets Robert Palmer with the silly backup singers and all. I prefer Eldritch's early singles with The Sisters. The "First and Last and Always" album is pretty good too. But that's just me.

  • @RotoPlasmX It's funny that you mention Billy Idol, because Tony James (bassist on Vision Thing) used to be the bassist for Generation X!

  • I love this melody!

  • so many years ago since i heard this the first time and its still epic!

  • Wahrscheinlich immer noch die wandelbarste, beneidenswerteste Stimme mit der jemals gesungen wurde.

Probably still the most versatile, enviable voice in which has been sung.

  • И че - это готика?

  • I am a huge SOM fan but this song is by far their best ever!

  • this song kicks YOUR favorite songs ass! unless this is your favorite song! Then it's a tie!

  • @darquedesmodus lol brilliant!

  • @darquedesmodus i love you b.

  • @marekgothfather that is soooo true

  • Um, this song has direct quotes from the book 1984. If any of you read the book, instead of watching the crappy movie you'd know that.

The flowers on the razor wire," he sees after getting off the bus. Walking on his way to meetup with his lover in the rented rooom... which supposedly was big-brother free.

He tried to have conversations with her, "he tried to tell her about Marx and Engles." The prostitute didn't understand, but it didn't matter.

And, "She looked good in ribbons.."

  • @tingmire Prostitute?

  • @tingmire Thank you for clearing that up. I've unfortunately had a copy of 1984 sitting on the shelf for 25 years that I never got around to reading. Maybe one day I'll do that... and the couple or three Ayn Rands beside it.

  • best song from the 'vision thing' album, imo. In general my favorite album is 'first and last and always' - and my favorite track ''Heartland'' from 'some girls wander by mistake' (and where else you might find it)

  • Damn, this is dark and powerful...one of my most favourite songs!!!

  • It'd be pretty intense to be the person this was written about... Amazing song.

  • ribbons: emotons-Collector since 10 years and yet

  • Flowers on the razor wire...

  • 27bslash6 bump!

  • What the fuck is "Twilight?"

I'm in the "Temple of Love," motherfucker!!

  • I use to dance to this when I was a Exotic Dancer:-)

  • @PriestessLong wish I`d seen you...;)

  • This song just captures all your emotions.

  • Actually, it is about a whore in a brothel...there were many of them; Mr. Eldritch was in love with one. That is it. <3<3 xxoo

  • @buconjic333

Close. It's about Jack the Ripper killing whores. Looked good in ribbons = cut to ribbons.

  • dont be afraid just walk on in

  • Andrew is a God.

  • This is definitely the darkest masterpiece ever... before computers & synthesizers!

  • @DrDioNYsis this song is full of synthesizers & the drums are a drum machine But, I will say it is a masterpiece

  • @DrDioNYsis

Umm no they use synthesisers quite a bit and the currant Doktor Avalanche is actually a heavily modded 386 computer running DOS and various music software.

Synths came out in the 1970's before Andrew even thought about having a band.

  • incomming!!!

  • @Siouxie The Cure...

That is the best explanation I have ever had for the lyrical content of this song, and I've loved it for the past 18 years.

    Cheers!

  • Eldritch is one sick puppy...Love it!

  • Does he mean dressed in ribbons or cut to ribbons? Just food for thought...

  • @VeryCosmopolitan Any "bodies" guess, but I don't think it had a happy ending! ;-] x

  • Knew a stripper who'd dance this song onstage with a very long red ribbon wrapped around her wrists as she danced. F*ckin' rocked. Good times.

  • @chaozengine .... 'knew'?

  • @chaozengine you know? I was just thinking the same thing..it is a cool stripper dance song

  • Used to listen to this tape on the bus when in high school.

  • AAAAhh....Detroit River Auditorium in the summer time....Sounds that will play back in my head forever.....Near 20 years now

  • best of their black psychosongs!

  • Comment removed

  • Great song brings back the memorys of the 90"s just moving to Michigan. WOW smoking weed and listening to every off beat off track non mainstream band fathomable. Thanks Sisters

  • the best sisters song

  • INCUMMING!!!!!!!!

  • my fave band evaaaa!!!!!!!

  • the red ribbons is the hour glass on her abdomen and the razor wires are the spider webs that let the spider know that lunch is served

  • This song is about a black widow spider

walk on in said the spider to the fly

  • and the spider tells the fly about marx and engels?

  • You're wrong this song is about murder and a jealous lover.

  • @wolvespack6

Actually, when the album came out they caught flak (heh) because the song was about a sadomasochistic relationship with a vietnamese prostitute. Or that's what Andrew claimed in an interview with, as I recall, Rolling Stone.

  • I think it was irony.

  • Tell ya what If Eldritch is into this S&M lark, you hold him and i'll beat a new album out of him! :-)))

  • no that would make it terrible shut up

  • @kristi28g Twilight already ruined a lot of things, and I don't think it should go and ruin this song too

  • Such a seductive song. I had forgotten how much I loved 'Ribbons' and how excellent an album 'Vision Thing' really is.

  • :O

    GREAT SONG! :D Really great

  • Yes... i've searched a long time. Now i have found the most powerful song on earth!

  • There are songs that gets stuck in your head and drives you crazy... and then theres this song that gets stuck in your head for days on end and you hope it never goes away. Almost every line is a world unto itself, like an endlessly quotable movie.

  • " don't be afraid...just walk on in..."

Oh, Andrew, I'd walk anywhere you wanted me to...after all these years, I'm still hot on you.

  • I wholeheartedly agree: "Ribbons" is not only one of the best rock songs ever composed, but it also has some of the most fabolous lyrics.

  • I have to agree, probably the best rock song ever produced... Still fresh, challenging and hypnotic.. Seriously, I first heard this in 1993 and ever since I simply HAVE to listen to it every so often...

    Dammit Eldrich, you hypnotised me...

  • 'm laying on my back now... just that line

  • This is quite possibly the SEXIEST song ever made!

  • @watersigns01 INCOMING!! LOL

  • THIS is THE BEST ROCK SONG EVER MADE.

DON'T BE AFRAID JUST WALK ON IT !

    AMEN

  • this is provably one of the best rock songs EVER made...

  • @spiralmedula agree

  • INCOMING!

  • Her eyes were cobalt red

    Her voice was cobalt blue

  • I was thinking about her...

    skin...

  • I tried to tell her about Marx and Engels, God and Angels, I don't really know what for but she looked good in ribbons !!!

  • la adoro!!!

  • it's hypnotising...and

....love is a many splinted thing! (what a sound!!!)

    cool!!!

  • it makes me want to follow a goth goddess to her lair....i can't resist her so why fight it...just walk on in

  • love...is a many splintered thing

  • I find the whole album Vision thing to be great, I don't see why people think it's so bad.

The Sisters had a great post-punk sound, and they took a turn, and made it a bit harder... that's not really so bad, check out "killing Joke" Its a post-punk band that had a harder sound than most post punk bands.

(And for the person that will probably comment, No I don't use the "G" word. I agree with eldritch, and all the other post punk bands that get the "G" label... )

  • Thanks for posting this! Agree with KaumEinenHauch and

Censelaigh about the Marx and Engels line. Perfect antidote to the fucking stupidity that passes for music these days

  • Flowers of a Razor wire. Not a good Valintines gift, but great lyrics!

    Awesome song.

  • Flowers on the razor wire

  • i want to edit it but i can't :(

  • and now i have another favorite band lol

  • Yes! Bloody brilliant.

  • Couldn't agree more. The best track ever.

  • Whoo... Still sends shivers down the spine after all these years. Best Sisters track ever.

  • These guys are great. I think I wasted too much of my high school years listening to Van Halen and Motley Crue. They will be in Michigan in November; I'll be there.

  • Don't worry, Patriotfront. I'm in the same boat as you.

  • "...Love is a many splintered thing... don't be afraid now, just walk on in..."

    Sisters are the best!

  • this is my favourite song by the sisters of mercy. They Rule

  • this song makes me wanna slit my wrists...

and when i saw em playing it live...............

  • So cold... the music and especially his voice.

  • First time I heard this song I just bought my Michael Jackon new album and black & white was on every radio station. Nirvana was a also aired with its nevermind album and I heard Entombed first album... the rest is history

  • ...but she looked good good in ribbons...

...don't be afraid now, just walk on in..
