It mean's Taveres was constantly paired up against other teams top line and top defensemen.

Agree. It took 4 or 5 top 2 picks for Pens to get out of the bottom of NHL. Tavares can't make Islanders contenders by himself. We need to stick to the plan, trust youngsters and continue to rebuild.
Because we see this as the turnaround of our Isles team. He's a big missing piece in the puzzle. The Isles have had such bad history of picking against the fans' wishes and taking a bad pick. This is different.
