My knees hurt when I bounce like you said (for the quick leg switch). I feel i should rest on my heel rather than the ball of the foor, like in squats.
Is this pain a problem only for me or is it a outcome of bad technique? I have abused my legs through powerlifting btw.
@ThePowerExcess Sorry to hear you're in pain but yes the heel rest is the correct technique, or at least it's the way I do it. The knees do extend straight when you kick out but the force of your decending body mass should mainly be absorbed by your heel. The front leg is just for balance. So you've got 2 stressors on your knees, when it bends and compresses with your weight on top of your heel, and also when your opposite leg extends in front. It's very demanding of your legs.
@protheory Thanks for the quick reply! It was on point.
However i can see that on the video you rest the curled leg (back leg) on its toes rather than its heel. So how am I supposed to support my weight on my heel since only my toes touch the ground?
@ThePowerExcess You're welcome! Sorry, my bad on this point. I realised earlier that there is a double rest going on here. Your back leg does rest on your heel but at the same time your heel is up as you should be on your toes also on the same back leg. So you support your weight on your heel, which in turn is supported by your toes enabling you to rest on your heel in a higher position than a flat foot (i.e. your toes keep the heel up to land on). Hope this helps you, good luck!
@ThePowerExcess No problem, glad I could help! It really is like riding a bike with the balance, you just have to ride the flow kinda thing and the balance will come. Looking forward to seeing a video of you in action some time!
The first I saw this I was with two of my friends... We like to imitate Russian accents and we were like "This is awsome!!!" we tried it and sadly couldn't do it too well... We mad a video later that night with us dancing and being weird and in that video we added the dance u did and failed hahaha. I've been practicing and am way better than a few weeks ago when we first did it but am still not as good as you. This video is awsome!
Might as well say, I've recently worked out the higher level Russian dance using the calf muscle in place of the heel. If you get really good like the Russian soldiers videos online, it's all in the calf and thigh it seems, holding yourself higher than with our heel method. I suspect that it's a combination of the two positions that was originally used, just letting everybody know. Thanks for watching folks! :)
HOW long would it take to get quasi good at this if you've never really done it before and are only in decent physical shape, and do it maybe a few minutes a day?
@arayamusic I was drunk on Stella Artois when I first discovered I could do this so to be honest I don't know how long it may take. It's just like riding a bike, follow the motions and ride it from balance point to balance point (heel to heel) and keep kicking and jumping. It's exhausting but you've just gotta 'do it' to get good I suppose same as riding a bike for the first time.
@arayamusic I mean I literally just tried it once and got it first time, probably as I was fully focused being drunk and wasn't doubting myself lol. Seriously, I just tried it once and found I could do it down/up hill etc immediately so I never needed to practice, my balance just shifts heel to heel and I keep it going, whenever you feel off balance for a split second it means it's time to jump to your other heel, and repeat ad infinitum.
Thanks bro I needed a Russian dance for my report in history class about Russian culture (and I'm going to a Halloween dance as a KGB agent tonight with a few other agents, were gonna do a Russian flash mob lol)
@sportsT45 I don't think it matters really to be fair. I usually extend my leg fully outwards for ease of technique but whatever works best for you, good luck!
My god! Im 12 and this dance really interest me so I was trying it for the 1st time and well all I could do is one of them!! Its harder than it looks! D:
yes i think one very important sidenote is not to overdo it it all at once. practice little by little!!!! i havent learned it yet but im gonna have to take it easy and do more stretching before. im not pro but i do some Greek and Armenian dancing mainly but recently ive been wanting to add Russian/Ukrainian to that list xD thanks for this helpful video bro
Hello, Um what's the the name of the dance called? I know it's not just the" Russian dance" And it would help me and my group in the presentation of Russia! Haha Apperently I have to dance this dance :P
I can dance that without touching the floor. It was hard, but I did it!
Took me about 3 weeks. Lil' tip: Practice 10 minutes every 5 days in 3 weeks and you will get it.
BTW, Russian dance is better than the shitty Tektonik (Sorry if I mispelled but I am not sorry about "Shitty", still I have respect to the people that dance that)
Nice one pyeris, I'm glad you like it :) Practice makes perfect I find, if you want inspiration check out Basement Jaxx's song on YouTube, it's called Take Me Back To Your House, it's got a lot of Russian Dancing on the video.

@protheory That did it! it all clear to me now!
Still got some minor pain but the movement is much more fluid. All that is left is work on the balance.
You were most helpful, thank you for that!
