I wish I could find footage of the other tunes from this performance. I used to have the DVD and I can't find it anymore. If anyone has posted them on here please let me know.
This is from their recently re- released on CD 'Album of the Year' originally put out on vinyl in the early 1980's if I recall. The best Messengers album ever in my opinion and that's quite a claim to make. The whole damn thing is as good as this and you won't be disappointed I assure you. Fantastic jazz !
@shanrico Glad you agree. I sense this one slipped under the radar a bit when it came out but of all the great Messengers line-ups over the years, this one with Wynton and Bobby etc., takes some beating doesn't it.
Please understand me....Art Blakey is a MONSTER!!!He seems to be able to read each musicians mind and know EXACTLY how much push to give, how much to lay back, and when to DROP DEM' BOMBS!!!
Oh man, the recording of this tune is awsome, fell in love with it. This would be considered wat? Hard-bop/Neo-bop? Or just post bop in general? By the way, the intro to this song is fukn awsome, I play alto sax(not the greatest) and it feels natural to the fingers. Lol just slides out easy.
In 1989, this tune defined a hot Summer night to me. A bottle of red wine, a pack of Chesterfields, a few candles and a warm breeze. Nothing more needed.

Charles Fambrough on bass. Album of the year is for me the best of Art Blakey during the period with Marsalis. Never heard a better sound on a jazz album as on this recording. It was recorded in Paris. Incredible big sound and super music. Everybody at his best. I saw them several times in concert during that period...
One of jazz music godfather! Blakey's bad ass on them muthafuckin' drums....hey ?love, eat ya heart out maaaaan!!! lmao nah I dig ?love as well...shit, Blakey paved the path for artist such as himself...ya dig??

Not a fan of Branford's Solo on this tune, but Billy Pierce really rips it.
