  • Looks like no wave. Great!!

  • nice bass, just perfect

  • I love the base line on this one <33

  • actually it is beautiful

  • to mi niszczy psychike ;)

  • DO I HEAR SWAN LAKE

    HOLYSHITIMINLOVE.gif

  • keith levine was a fucking great guitarist - this is like the velvets meets king tubby meets the pistols. a very important record in british musical history.

  • does everyone know that pil is putting the final touches to their new album!!! been a long time coming, to say the least.

  • Amazing how much funk he gets out of those basslines with only a few notes. Incredibly inventive.

  • Do you want to help me?donate via paypal hymieshim@gmail.com thanks.

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico In other words, yes he was

  • Why would anyone dislike this?

  • be reel nyce 2 C the sTuDiO version of this at LEESTE and/or extended mix/es mister ROTTEN!

  • great!

  • 0:37 Yeah I understand why he's called "rotten"

  • @GoodbyeRubyTu3sday lol that is actually how he got his name, for having rotten teeth

  • @Jackinleeds01 Yes I know...a perfect name for Johnny xD

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico

Yeah. He left the pistols and formed PiL.

He wanted to do something completely different, as he was basically the “face” of popular, commercial punk, which he hated.

So he formed a new band, his own label, and just started releasing bizarre, experimental, dance, rock, jazz, that went on to be known as “post punk”.

  • Fucking awsome..!!! this is music from a time when music was still made and played with lots of "BALLS" unlike the decaffeinated , pussyfied music of today...

  • guitar at moments play swan lake??

  • @moshi84 Hence the retitling of the piece in the album version. IIRC, Levene was/is a classically trained guitar (listen to the extended live version of Memories for further proof).

  • This is the best PiL song as far as I'm concerned.

  • Fucking Great!!!!!! ...yeaaahhh

  • This guy is rotten.

  • Johnny Rotten was really attractive in 1979. Wow.

  • wait. is this irony? i mean the top comment

  • wasnt he in the sex pistols?

  • weird, but interesting, singing is unique, so is the guitar and the drums and the instruments, in a weird way i like it.

  • This is real music

  • I love the way he dance and is eyes !!^^^^

  • the300x300: lydon is with a bear in CRUEL video clip =)

  • one thing you will never see: lydon with a beard

  • This is the real shit! Some young folks are so removed from themselves that they get scared at anything that's real up their necks! Daydreamers International, you may have already decided not to be able to live your own life...take this PIL clip before the sun may go down on you...

  • this is one of my favourite PIL tracks by far, I'm still find it totally absurd that this was dedicated to his dying mother, he actually played it to her before she died. Here you go Mum, this is for you, a dark, nihilistic, bassy militant song with me screaming over chaotic distortion, a token of my love for you. Oh son, it's beautiful!

  • @simmy3000 But Mrs. Lydon loved The Stooges. Atonal honk was nothing new to her!

  • @simmy3000 The retake they did for this song called "Swan Lake", though extremely similar, sounds sooo much better. The small textural additions and better mixing really makes a difference.

But that song title? Unbeatable :)

  • @simmy3000 It was about how she was treated while she was dying but your point is very much a valid one haha

  • Comment removed

  • Try out the Soft Boys if you like these guys

  • i'm seeing them tomorrow at a festival...does anyone know if they play sex pistols songs sometimes?

  • @loltingable Don't worry they probably don't. More the luck eh?

  • Quality. Nothing even comes close these days.

  • Still holds up 33 years later. Our great grands will rock out to this tune.

  • its locks like SID VICIUS

  • @0N1K it spells like a RETARD

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico WIth Afrikka Bambataa Great tune.

  • John is fucking sexy ^^

  • @Tynyje How right you are...

  • After watching this I think a staring contest with Mr. Lydon might be the scariest thing ever haha

  • johnny rotten is a good lookin man and he is the man! :D

  • this is completely.. fucked up..

  • my metal box has rusted, I cant get it open. :(

  • Killer bass!

  • Sorry to say, I've watched someone die of cancer, & this song is spot on. Didn't fully get it until I saw PiL live, I had read Lydon's dad died, when I saw him sing it live I suddenly knew he meant it & the sentiment of the song resonated properly for the first time. Sounds daft but sometimes things as daft as pop/rock music just hit the nail on the head & you can't knock it if you get it, blah blah etc

  • ahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa

  • It's so bloody revolting to see on the top right corner, while watching this cool song, a fucking gay ad talking about dating twats in uniform. isnt it? god

  • Unique voice Love it, got the album Metal Box in a Metal box :)

  • Love that fucking bass

  • what was the rap song john sang on i think it may have been for a film something to do with time i think

  • @trippy898 leftfield - open up ;)

  • and so sad about polly !

  • the pistols were nothing to this

  • I Fucking Love This Song....Also Rotten Looks Like He's About To Cry The Whole Song..

I Love The Way He Sings...

  • Cause: I heard Public Image Ltd. for the first time today.

Effect: I'm probably going to listen to a lot of Public Image Ltd.

  • I don't get why people have to talk about the Sex Pistols in PiL video's. Just because someone was in one band, doesn't mean the other band has to be exactly the same. I love both Pil and the Sex Pistols, because i have a wide taste in music, and can appreciate them for being different. Maybe everyone moaning about this not being like the sex pistols should try listening to something else for a change.

  • The most heartfelt song written to a mother ever!!!

  • I'm still young, so I don't understand the true pain he feels. It's still one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and it contains something most music nowadays needs. Emotion.

  • ive noticed his lyrical skill improved by leaps and bounds in p.i.l....though his lyrics in the pistols music was pretty good as well but pales in comparison to pi.l's flow of consciousness art attack!

  • My dad died a few months ago..... know how he feels now.

  • Mesmerising.

  • Bass player troll face @0:53

  • Troll face at 0:36

  • people think tool is an 'art' HA

i hate this its so great! it is; drunken-englishman indian-raga spectaculore.

  • Devastating song

  • So when are you going to drop this shit music man and reform the sex pistols ?

  • @Zamriasra - LOL opinions, your's stink like the arse of a hobo.

  • @eroticyobbo :) you only say that because you know i am right this shit is garbage compared to the sex pistols

  • @Zamriasra LOL good troll.

    But i have seen better.

    carry on!

  • @eroticyobbo I will ;) you should see me in the streets I make a good hitman. We would team up.

  • woo hoo.

  • I just love the bass of PIL.

  • @DanAndHoe That is so true! The bassline is extremely addictive.

  • you alright jhon shits been bad but cant complain seeing as deaths not an escape

  • Swan lake? Isn't that Peer Gynt by Edward Grieg?

    Awsome anyway.

  • Johnny is a fuckin talent poet!

  • P.I.L. and John Lydon forever!

  • Keith you fucking rock. Truly the "Jimi Hendrix of the Punk Generation" as I think Simon Reynolds calls you. Wobble so kool w/ the shades and those heavy dread basslines. Lydon looking like a businessman whose been up for a week and a half tweaking. Outpunking the Sex Pistols with a sound that's proven undateable

  • sid was a shit, he didn't do anything, he was just NIHILIST

  • In sex pistols everybody talks about sid. but Johnny is my hero

  • @MylesTheMisfit Yep. Sid was more the image though. Johnny to me is the voice and that counts for much more.

  • i loves the lydon.......

  • He's probably so fucking sad inside. Johnny wrote this song for his mum after she died.

  • John has such an intense stare.

  • I Feel like Im 15 and seeing Les Claypool for the first time again

  • 1:21 OMG

  • best track ever from pil....

  • Classic PIL! Never knew the story behind it.

  • Drummer = Richard "Snake Hips" Dudanski? Alright!

  • Justin Beiber does this song way better.

  • @R0773N WHO THE FUCK IS JUSTIN BEIBER!!!!!

  • @R0773N please quit the justin bieber comments><!!

  • @lesyouri

They are on like every video of any cool old song. People just need to get over the fact that there is bad modern music. There always has been and always will be. I swear the anti Bieber idiots spend more time thinking about him than his fans do.

  • Dedicated to my mum who sadly died last friday and was cremated today.

    Miss you mam.

  • @twistedspanner Please Accept My Deepest Sympathy In Your Bereavement.

    God Bless you.

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico

Thanks for your kind words, Much appreciated. My mum died a slow degrading death, Cancer/ Brain tumour. I would'nt wish it on my worst enemy. Death Disco the most appropriate song!

    Cheers.

  • @twistedspanner Yeah my deepest condolences I am sorry for your loss

  • @twistedspanner So sorry ma man.... Keep your head up and keep on kickin! My deepest respects- Dash

  • @twistedspanner Was She Smackin out of her Head

  • @twistedspanner If this is your mourning video, well, your mum was fucking epic and you're a brilliant fackin' son. Sorry I'm late to the mourning, lad.

  • @twistedspanner so sorry for your loss! the pain subsides in time...lots of time...lots and lots of time...

  • @twistedspanner Echo that; my Dad died 11 years ago, was tough. Remember the good times, if they existed!

  • Always loved these guys............but they just weren't the same when Jah Wobble left.

  • This is absolutely brutal, used to like John Lydon when he was in the Sex Pistols but as he got older he became extremely boring doing outrageous things just to be outrageous. At some point an old person constantly being a prick is no longer entertaining and just about as mind numbing as the rest of nowdays celebrity's.

  • @Noahmlr he doesnt do it on purpose, its in his nature, his personality...

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico

His mother asked him to write this song whilst she was dying. She wasnt litterally on her death bed when it was written. You should read the sleevenotes in Plastic Box, it reveals a lot of otherwise unknown meenings about the songs. For example Johnny wrote Under The House after seeing an apparition, but he also adds that he likes his drink, Jaja.

  • Keith liked to act humble, but he really liked being a rock star on stage. Don't get me wrong, I think he was/is a guitar genius.

  • Incredible, thank you for this and all your other music. if life was fair, artists would be rewarded for how much their work actually enhances other peoples lives

  • I never knew this song was by PIL until a couple months ago. I heard this song on a university radio station in Vancouver in the 80's and had it on tape. I stumbled upon it on Youtube.

  • The live version sounds better. I'm all for loud bass, but no instrument should be mastered higher than the singer.

  • please watch ANDI SEX GANG "KAMIKAZE BEAUTY"

  • John Lydon & Keith Levene & Jah Wobble...geniuses! :)

  • John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten have to be the greatest british lead singer of punk rock, no one can top him about that level he is on, he is the greatest living legend!

Such an georgeous and genious guy:)

  • @Darkangelrock92 Liam Gallagher has a better voice for starters.

  • @Firstserger I dont think that you can call Oasis punk rock :D

  • @L0rtsu Miss red the comment, thought it was british rock singers.

  • @Firstserger Bollocks, Liam Gallagher doesn't have a voice, he has a nasal whine.

  • No mistaking that voice...!

  • Top Three Singles:

    1.Transmission-Joy Division

    2.Rebel Rebel-David Bowie

    3.Death Disco-P.I.L

  • The Pistols were 5th grade. PiL is receiving your PhD.

  • disco is still alive, john.

  • Who`s better, Public Image Limited, or Devo, I can`t decide.

  • This song was written for his mother after she died.

  • i wonder if he knew that the working title for Floyd's Run Like Hell was Death Disco.

  • Jah Wobble is cool

  • I used 'Swan Lake' for the melody. The reason it was called 'Death Disco' was because it was about John's mum. The person he was singing about, 'seeing in your eyes,' was his mother dying. That's what John was singing about very passionately, I might add. From my point of view, I was just trying to do something with the music. I didn't know what he was singing about at the time – he was just: "It's 'Death Disco' Keith, that's what it is!" Keith Levene

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico This is how we should take the world...with a riff and a glare and the grief bundled as terror

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico

This is how one shoudl confront the world. With a riff and a glare and grief bundled as terror...

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico Good call fella, thanks for the info too, top tune though, at the time I was heavily into 'Disco' but I liked this because it came across as so 'anti-disco' yet there was an ever so subtle 'groove' through-out, under-pinned brilliantly by 'Wobbles' quietly manic, repetiive, somewhat funky bassline. The screetching guitar sound was a master-stroke adding to the conflict alongside John's haunting vocals. My mates were baffled @ the time when I bought this, now they understand.

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico - The use of Swan Lake is gorgeous. I listen to that piece just about everyday and whilst I didn't get too much into PIL, I like that watching this video all these years later brings a smile to my face. I listened to "This is Not a Love Song" so much back when it came out that the cassette tape ended up getting chewed up but I think I still have a copy somewhere on vinyl. It's a good thing that Tchaikovsky hasn't come back from the grave to claim royalties...

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico Well done for posting on these PiL threads Keith and uploading videos fans all want to see and hear, shows you want to keep up with your public. Would've loved to have heard a recording of you playing lead with the clash but I guess it's left to the imagination unless you have an upload of that somewhere too

  • never gave this band much of a chance, till now that i downloaded their discography. i get a good feeling from this song. i really dig the beat lol

  • john lydon aka johnny rotten does a awsome job for being vocalist of both bands like sex pistols and p.i.l:)

  • i saw the new lineup and they're fucking great. aren't bands allowed to evolve?

  • I'm ever so thankful for seeing them live! they are still tight!

  • ZARA FU

  • stop 2:28

  • 1979.....

-This Thing of Wonder caused the TV befuddled middle classes & violent conservative oiks to pop their own haemorrhoids in disbelief & furious incomprehension. -I remember the shitstorm well.

PIL were like a Grand Emetic Overdose for England. -An England that knew/knows not what to do. PIL were the arrow that pointed to England's endemic awkwardness.

    England never forgave such exposure.....

  • Im under 40 years of age. And like Old punk music, especially John lydon. For some reason people should care about this and thumbs me up imediatly for my amazing musical taste at being under 40.

  • @08havoc08 Thumbs up for you havoc, but I'm 17 and I listen to Henry Cow

  • @08havoc08 well i'm over 40 man, and prefer gbh, but anyway....

  • I think both Sex Pistols and P.I.L are both great bands and John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten do a great job for being the vocals for both bands.:)

    He is the man!

  • @Heavymetalpunker92x P.I.L. was so much more than the Sex Pistols.

  • what utter fakery. The death of the 70's RIP

  • I phucking love this.

    That is all :)

  • This has to be the most 'uncommercial' Top 20 'hit' of all time . . .

  • wow!

    merci

    des bisous

  • I want to forget tomorrow & live yesterday -YEAH!

  • this song is so badass even if johnny put no words on it

  • I have to honestly say that I tried to like this song but couldn't. I really enjoy the music video though, so that is something...

  • I have no reason...

  • John stupid face

  • I want tb-3000

  • Jah Wobble + Straight-back chair = greatest bass lines in existence....

  • JW's bass is like the throbbing of the veins of humanity :D

  • i chew on razor blades

  • @BonzoGoesToMexico Ohhh! Thanks for the clarification; I thought I had lost my mind!

  • Isn't this Swan Lake??

  • @JasonBNYC - It sure is Swan Lake! How cool is that!

  • hey look! it's keith levine! most underrated guitarist ever!! huge influence!!!

  • Jah Wobble shook my house to it's foundations with Metal Box , set of 3 x 33+1/3 in a metal film can...Pure genius.

  • It definitely confused all the Sex Pistols pop fans. I was 18, had loved punk, and was by 1979 looking for something that wasn't Sham 69 or the UK Subs. This stood out in a post punk Volcano ash.

  • Too bad it could never be this pure again. Someone else needs to step up while old Johnny grabs the money.

  • Mr. Jah Wobble ..... superb... him and Tina Weymouth ;-)

  • Go see the band live. The current version of PiL is tight. Lots of old gems in the new setlist: Albatross, Death Disco, Memories, Public Image, Poptones, Religion, Chant, Flowers of Romance...etc... The LA show was incredible! No opening band...just PiL.
