keith levine was a fucking great guitarist - this is like the velvets meets king tubby meets the pistols. a very important record in british musical history.
Fucking awsome..!!! this is music from a time when music was still made and played with lots of "BALLS" unlike the decaffeinated , pussyfied music of today...
@moshi84 Hence the retitling of the piece in the album version. IIRC, Levene was/is a classically trained guitar (listen to the extended live version of Memories for further proof).
This is the real shit! Some young folks are so removed from themselves that they get scared at anything that's real up their necks! Daydreamers International, you may have already decided not to be able to live your own life...take this PIL clip before the sun may go down on you...
Jah Wobble has just finished a new album Psychic Life with Julie Campbell (alias Lonelady), which is due out in November. It also sees Wobble reunited with ex-PiL guitarist Keith Levene for the first time since Metal Box. Check out the new Facebook page.
this is one of my favourite PIL tracks by far, I'm still find it totally absurd that this was dedicated to his dying mother, he actually played it to her before she died. Here you go Mum, this is for you, a dark, nihilistic, bassy militant song with me screaming over chaotic distortion, a token of my love for you. Oh son, it's beautiful!
@simmy3000 The retake they did for this song called "Swan Lake", though extremely similar, sounds sooo much better. The small textural additions and better mixing really makes a difference.
Sorry to say, I've watched someone die of cancer, & this song is spot on. Didn't fully get it until I saw PiL live, I had read Lydon's dad died, when I saw him sing it live I suddenly knew he meant it & the sentiment of the song resonated properly for the first time. Sounds daft but sometimes things as daft as pop/rock music just hit the nail on the head & you can't knock it if you get it, blah blah etc
It's so bloody revolting to see on the top right corner, while watching this cool song, a fucking gay ad talking about dating twats in uniform. isnt it? god
I don't get why people have to talk about the Sex Pistols in PiL video's. Just because someone was in one band, doesn't mean the other band has to be exactly the same. I love both Pil and the Sex Pistols, because i have a wide taste in music, and can appreciate them for being different. Maybe everyone moaning about this not being like the sex pistols should try listening to something else for a change.
I'm still young, so I don't understand the true pain he feels. It's still one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and it contains something most music nowadays needs. Emotion.
ive noticed his lyrical skill improved by leaps and bounds in p.i.l....though his lyrics in the pistols music was pretty good as well but pales in comparison to pi.l's flow of consciousness art attack!
Keith you fucking rock. Truly the "Jimi Hendrix of the Punk Generation" as I think Simon Reynolds calls you. Wobble so kool w/ the shades and those heavy dread basslines. Lydon looking like a businessman whose been up for a week and a half tweaking. Outpunking the Sex Pistols with a sound that's proven undateable
@lesyouri They are on like every video of any cool old song. People just need to get over the fact that there is bad modern music. There always has been and always will be. I swear the anti Bieber idiots spend more time thinking about him than his fans do.
Thanks for your kind words, Much appreciated. My mum died a slow degrading death, Cancer/ Brain tumour. I would'nt wish it on my worst enemy. Death Disco the most appropriate song!
@twistedspanner If this is your mourning video, well, your mum was fucking epic and you're a brilliant fackin' son. Sorry I'm late to the mourning, lad.
This is absolutely brutal, used to like John Lydon when he was in the Sex Pistols but as he got older he became extremely boring doing outrageous things just to be outrageous. At some point an old person constantly being a prick is no longer entertaining and just about as mind numbing as the rest of nowdays celebrity's.
His mother asked him to write this song whilst she was dying. She wasnt litterally on her death bed when it was written. You should read the sleevenotes in Plastic Box, it reveals a lot of otherwise unknown meenings about the songs. For example Johnny wrote Under The House after seeing an apparition, but he also adds that he likes his drink, Jaja.
Incredible, thank you for this and all your other music. if life was fair, artists would be rewarded for how much their work actually enhances other peoples lives
I never knew this song was by PIL until a couple months ago. I heard this song on a university radio station in Vancouver in the 80's and had it on tape. I stumbled upon it on Youtube.
John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten have to be the greatest british lead singer of punk rock, no one can top him about that level he is on, he is the greatest living legend!
I used 'Swan Lake' for the melody. The reason it was called 'Death Disco' was because it was about John's mum. The person he was singing about, 'seeing in your eyes,' was his mother dying. That's what John was singing about very passionately, I might add. From my point of view, I was just trying to do something with the music. I didn't know what he was singing about at the time – he was just: "It's 'Death Disco' Keith, that's what it is!" Keith Levene
@BonzoGoesToMexico Good call fella, thanks for the info too, top tune though, at the time I was heavily into 'Disco' but I liked this because it came across as so 'anti-disco' yet there was an ever so subtle 'groove' through-out, under-pinned brilliantly by 'Wobbles' quietly manic, repetiive, somewhat funky bassline. The screetching guitar sound was a master-stroke adding to the conflict alongside John's haunting vocals. My mates were baffled @ the time when I bought this, now they understand.
@BonzoGoesToMexico - The use of Swan Lake is gorgeous. I listen to that piece just about everyday and whilst I didn't get too much into PIL, I like that watching this video all these years later brings a smile to my face. I listened to "This is Not a Love Song" so much back when it came out that the cassette tape ended up getting chewed up but I think I still have a copy somewhere on vinyl. It's a good thing that Tchaikovsky hasn't come back from the grave to claim royalties...
@BonzoGoesToMexico Well done for posting on these PiL threads Keith and uploading videos fans all want to see and hear, shows you want to keep up with your public. Would've loved to have heard a recording of you playing lead with the clash but I guess it's left to the imagination unless you have an upload of that somewhere too
-This Thing of Wonder caused the TV befuddled middle classes & violent conservative oiks to pop their own haemorrhoids in disbelief & furious incomprehension. -I remember the shitstorm well.

Im under 40 years of age. And like Old punk music, especially John lydon. For some reason people should care about this and thumbs me up imediatly for my amazing musical taste at being under 40.
It definitely confused all the Sex Pistols pop fans. I was 18, had loved punk, and was by 1979 looking for something that wasn't Sham 69 or the UK Subs. This stood out in a post punk Volcano ash.
Go see the band live. The current version of PiL is tight. Lots of old gems in the new setlist: Albatross, Death Disco, Memories, Public Image, Poptones, Religion, Chant, Flowers of Romance...etc... The LA show was incredible! No opening band...just PiL.

Yeah. He left the pistols and formed PiL.
He wanted to do something completely different, as he was basically the “face” of popular, commercial punk, which he hated.
So he formed a new band, his own label, and just started releasing bizarre, experimental, dance, rock, jazz, that went on to be known as “post punk”.

Jah Wobble shook my house to it's foundations with Metal Box , set of 3 x 33+1/3 in a metal film can...Pure genius.

It definitely confused all the Sex Pistols pop fans. I was 18, had loved punk, and was by 1979 looking for something that wasn't Sham 69 or the UK Subs. This stood out in a post punk Volcano ash.

Too bad it could never be this pure again. Someone else needs to step up while old Johnny grabs the money.

Go see the band live. The current version of PiL is tight. Lots of old gems in the new setlist: Albatross, Death Disco, Memories, Public Image, Poptones, Religion, Chant, Flowers of Romance...etc... The LA show was incredible! No opening band...just PiL.
