The big carriers try and stick their landings on the first time to save themselves big money avoiding go arounds and delays.(If you miss the landing you get sent back to the end of the line so to speak) I think they are getting a lot better about safety these days and utilizing CRM to improve safety. By the time the pilot aborted our approach I could see the runway a good way off to the side of the plane.

That is... we were way over the grass.

I've done some stupid things and been in some kinda life-threatening situations... but that's the most "I'm gonna die" moment I've had to date.

We diverted to an airport on the coast (about an hour away) where the wind was steadier and got a bus ride home.
