I read about the story behind this song. Ashcroft was visiting a bustling NYC coffeehouse and ordering a drink, when a barista asked him for his name; he said the name Judas. He said people in the coffee shop reacted quite strongly to the name Judas – Ashcroft watched their shocked expressions in amazement – he was baffled that the word Judas could still pack such a symbolic punch, thousands of years after biblical times
I really do think this is the best thing on Forth, and actually one of their best ever songs. I never tire of listening to it. What a gorgeous dreamy sound McCabe has created, and it just soars from 4:20 onwards. Cheers, lads.

This song is really dreary. Don't get me wrong though, I really love the verve, Urban hymns is one of my favourite albums ever ! It really could do with a catchy guitar rif or something
when i hrd d song 4 d ist time i continued playing it 4 over 7 hrs at a stretch....this is d greatest fuckin song after snow patrols run.......its symphonic,melodic........n what lyrics:she said a latte double shot 4 judas.......ashcroft is d man n they r d greatest band in d wrld!!!
I don`t know what happen, but yestarday i bought the record, and since yestarday i have listened to this song 20times...it`s beautiful....i love it!:-)\
For me, this is one of their best songs. The lyrics and vocals goes straight through me and the melody is just symphony. Brilliant. I really hoped for this one to be a single but I guess it's not much commercial and only true fan can appreciate the beauty of this masterpiece.
Lost my job in the credit crunch and those two tracks have been the soundtrack to my life recently as I was listening to them on the tube, on my way to work the fateful day I was made redundant!
I feel you man! The Verve's music to me is like gospel! It helps me cope. Check out their old stuff..songs like "The Drugs Don't Work, Lucky Man, A Man Called Sun, Beautiful Mind, Make It Till Monday, See You In the Next One, This Is Music and some of Richard Ashcroft's solo work...especially "Brave New World, Check the Meaning, Science of Silence, Keys To The World and others! The lyrics will soothe you..the melody will transport you to a place blissful and peaceful. Take care!
@iwantmycountryback72 Quality.......totally agree !! Richard is the greatest song writer of his Generation and it up there with lennon and dylan in my opinion.
This is one of my favourite songs from 'Forth''. After 'Appalachian Springs' that is, but their is not one bad song from the album. They are all 10/10, i'm obsessed with The Verve...
Been a verve fan for years, Urban Hymns was the first album I ever bought, and then backtracked through Nrothern Soul and A Storm In Heaven, and love them.
But blimey, for all the years Ive spent listening to the music, this song has to be the best Verve song ever. Just amazing.
mlrdmn you are spot on about forth,i love the variety of it.Judas is one my favourites it`s sublime, this album sums up the verve perfectly,a truly great album.
Judas and appalachian springs are two of the best songs ever written!!! Buy "Forth", it will change your life!! Never have I heard such beauty and complete musical bliss from an album before..Pink Floyd's albums may come close!
haha yeah in the beginning it sounds like bono on the newer u2 stuff. but despite the comparison this is favorite track on this great album. they really took it to a greater level as the song nears the end.
this is there best album. its the most dynamic, adventurous yet accessible. When i first heard love is noise is was like this is crap... but it grew on me and ive come to realize it's a very smart song and in fact they definitly shouuld not have released the album with out it. It's a hook song and for the festival circuits. Come on, brit pop has changed in the last 10 years. Anyways - the album is ace, dont listen to it on Mp3- all of nicks work is gone in the mp3s, it's all the in the etheral.
Why are NitrousMcBread's comments marked as spam? Just because he doesn't like this track and this album? That's nice folks, agree with us or your comments won't be shown is it? Nice. I agreed with him, does that mean I'm next?
I loved Urban Hymns..and 'the drugs dont work' was my least fav on there. I prerred weeping willow and sonnet and this time (which this kinda sounds like)
Uh, I have every Verve release proper, starting with the great EP they first put out. After Endless Life and A Man Called Sun, I was sold. No Come Down has good stuff on it too.
This is good im going out to buy Forth tomorrow. Could people stop going on about Urban Hymns. A Northern Soul is the definitive Verve album. You would know that if some of you listened to it, & stopped having The Drugs Dont Work on loop. This Is Music, On Your Own, So It Goes & Lifes An Ocean all blow UH out of the water, and thats only 4 of the songs off ANS. Im looking forward to buying Forth, could be their best work to date.
You're absolutely right, A Northern Soul is the definitive Verve album, not Urban Hymns. Just because something more popular, doesn't always mean its better!
THANK YOU. I encourage people out there to buy A Northern Soul or A Storm In Heaven for that matter. Urban Hymns is good, but their first two albums contain their best work. Both albums dont have the recognition they deserve.
The real fans love it really REALLY not lieing 2 ourselfs we know we can hear that this is as good if not better then the last album UH,,cuz its back to the real verve sound!
NitrousMcBread you are right unfortunately. I loved The Thaw Sessions and was hoping that was a taste of things to come on the album. Maybe Chic Dub is OK. But the others are pretty poor. The album has no cohesion at all. There are some odd tempo's for The Verve and I wouldn't listen to Love Is Noise if you paid me! Sorry. Was really looking forward to 'Forth', but it's honestly really disappointing.
No way. Love is Noise is actually a very complex track. listen to how nick plays. a few seconds into the song, think "I wanna be adored" by stone roses who greatly influenced the verve's music.
stop giving these comments bad ratings!! everyone's entitled to an opinion. Noodlehorn/NitrousMcBread, i thought exactly the same thing about Forth when I got it, practically didn't sleep for 3 days out of disappointment. But Verve albums usually aren't that accessible at first, so i carried on listening and it really is brilliant. Only song that sounds too RA-solo for me is I See Houses, really. Love Is Noise is all right but still don't like that ah-ah bit of the voice loop.
every body needs to quit nagging bout the old album i know it cant be replaced the old song are awsome.but this new album rocks to.i mean they been gone for 11 years.look at the new coldplay album its sh*t compared to this
have to agree viva la vida's getting all this praise and it isn't any where near as good as this forth is my album of the year its a stunning comeback
I so wanted to like this. But it sounds like the dashed-off afterthought of a spent force. It pains me to say this, but it really looks like all the toothpaste has long since been squeezed out of this particular tube.
It's wafer-thin. Not a patch on even the worst numbers on "A Storm In Heaven" which is obviously what it's trying to emaulate. This is the sound of a band who clearly can't stand to spend time in each others' company.
