I know both Mike and Ray personally. They were in my home town and I got to meet them. That was back in 1999 or 2000 I think. They were doing workshops on a small reserve and my step-dad helped out. I got to meet Mike, Ray and many other talented artists. And I have to say that Mike is the most amazing harmonica player I've ever met, and I hope he comes back to Goosebay soon

I Love it ! My ears can hardly take in notes so quickly done,"Thats Harpin". I hope to play the Orange Blossom Special on harmonica, but at a slower "Tennessee Hillbilly Pace",I'll be working on it for a while !
I swear this is the best harmonica I've ever heard. I've heard a lot of his stuff. Never disappoints. I could listen to this music all day. This stuff arouses the soul.
This chap is a fantastic player amongst many. Why do people always have this need to compare players who are a cut above the norm. They are all brilliant in their own style and attempting to make comparisons is negative.Beauty is in the ears of the listener.
As far as technical ability, Mike's the best I have heard and one of my favorites players. But saying who the best player in the world is impossible. But to those who say he sucks or blows, why waste your time here? Go listen to Boy George or whoever.
It is nice to hear a version of Orange Blossom which isn't a Charlie McCoy clone (I love you Charlie, but there's only one Real McCoy), and hey, Mike Stevens is wonderful!! This vid showshow two musicians might struggle before they find their common groove, but when hey do, it's thrilling, like "aha!".
I listened to you play at Gindick Jam Camp and must say you have got a ways to go yourself. Your Blues playing is light years behind his Bluegrass harping, Jeremy. When you start hitting and bending OB's like Mike and can keep up with a fiddler without passing out then you will have room to talk about taste.
you should hear all of his music, not just the bluegrass stuff. he's not all about speed. he's a frickin' genius. there's a film being made about him. you should check it out when it's released.
I really didn't mean to slam Mike Stevens as hard as I did..but there is no way this guy is the "best harmonica player in the world" (as a previous post states). Buddy Greene kicks his (and pretty much every harp players)ass. The way I see it, harmonica players need to stay together and support each other like a family. so I am sorry quinoacat.
You are OK man. I accept your apology and understand where you are coming from better now. I am sorry I got so defensive of Mike. I am more of a fan of Blues harp players like Kim Wilson or Dennis Greunling myself, but I like other styles of harping too. If it is played on a harmonica it catches my ear. Check out Terry McMillan if you ever want to get a kick out of watching a bunch of old church folk rocking out to some good harping.
No he blows, i don't count my self as a good harp player. i know one when i here one. he can make a lot of noise and WoW he can do the 10 hole over blow, haven't heard that enough.
That is why he is a successful signed artist with many Canadian Bluegrass fans. He makes money at making the noise you seem to despise. I have had people confuse him with Charlie McCoy. You probably have never heard any other harping done by Mike Stevens and you would probably say you did not like Charlie McCoy either.
All Harp players BLOW and SUCK. It is a Scientific Fact. When users like REDHOT34 say 2 great players suck as if they are no good then he classes as a worthless troll who who BITES and eats dung (like most earthworms do) and can just be blocked and then ignored.
quinocat, I remember who you are from camp. You were that really ugly dude who sucked at the harp...which explains why you think this video is so awesome.
You are brilliant. No, you have never met me. Don't confuse me with any of your camp fantasies. If you had one tenth the talent Mike Stevens has you might possibly be able to blow your way out of a wet paper bag to save your life. At the rate you are going though, you would be dead.
My music will be online in due time. A challenge from a dweeb like you is NO inspiration because I could actually care less what an inbred like you thinks anyhow. Ye haw, now stick that in your pipe and blow it out your harp or what have you maestro, lol...
Buddy Greene is awesome. His harping is NOT the same style as Mike Stevens. I notice many think Mike noodles too much on the Harp because he plays fast Bluegrass and does a bunch of odd sounds. Much of what he plays sounds a bit lacking in direction which classes as noodling but what he plays is fast and complicated and actually has direction which sets it apart. No Mike is NOT Buddy Greene by any stretch of the imagination. Mike is awesome at what he does, bradley4987.
I looked that up. Sorry, there's nothing Buddy did there that Mike can't do. Buddy's a good player,... and a good singer, but Mike can outplay him. You should hear his Canadian fiddle tunes album... The World Is Only Air... just shocking harmonica playing.
I just ate my harp ...

Agree, beauty is in the ears. But must say: the harp playing is an extreme form of talent. My mouth open. Sorry for the English, i'm Dutch.
