  • Just play 2 strings at once, but the string that's closer to the floor (higher in pitch and smaller diameter) 2 frets higher and thats a power chord.

  • TO SIMPLIFY THIS. a power chord is just a major or minor chord without the 3rd note of the scale. for example to play E5=E power chord. Just play the first 3 notes (bass notes) of the E chord dont play the G string (G#) note. Same goes for every power chord. Just remove the 3rd degree. Just remember power chords are neither minor or major.

  • you suck at teaching.

  • my fingers are crooked every time I grip a power chord. my fingers a kinda puny

  • I hate guitar its so confusing I cant play it at all I try and it fails I get blisters on my fingers and I dont get what the fuck chords are !

  • @AmeliaAdamsTv bro take it easy,u can do it if i can do it, then u can do it also. Just takes lots of practice. i honestly believe in u i think u can do it just learn NORMAL chords 1st then get everything else you need, Takes time and practice.

  • @AmeliaAdamsTv look online at chord charts. Go to your library. They probably have a ton of books on guitar. Blisters and cuts are perfectly normal when you first start out. You have to develop a callus on your fingers. The pain is temporary dude. I suggest starting with an electric guitar, they are WAY easier on your fingers. If you are playing electcic tt sounds like you might need to take your axe to a music store and have the action lowered.

  • Unbelievable !

    I understood it :D

  • Makes sense now. Fucking guitar teacher taught me nothing. d:

  • 4:25 guy fapping in the background

  • I play bass.

  • Reminds me of Danzig....Mothir...

  • yall are pissed cause yall wanna find a quick little lesson that babys you through so you can play a little something for your friends so they think your cool. if you knew ANYTHING about guitar this would make perfect sense. fags.

  • @MetalliMan0521 Holy fuck you don't have to call people fags you douche. While people might fail at guitar you fail at life. Congratu-fucking-lations you top notch fucking asshole

  • @MetalliMan0521 Welcome, King Douche! I'll get your '86 Honda Civic ricer ready fo you!

  • @MetalliMan0521 then why did u watch the video?

  • @MetalliMan0521 Please fix your horrific spelling, my eyes are burning.

  • Is that a paul reed smith?

  • Bass guitar is so much better.

  • how can you not get this im self taught and i know all this its all basics

  • @MyBootysweat there are some people that arnt as smart as u are.

  • That made... NO sense at all.

  • wtf notes r u playing lol jk but seriously break it

    down nah

  • This video did not help at all man gotta break it down more than that faggot.

  • The only people who would need to watch this are fuckin idiots, and you can tell this is true because the highest rated comments are people being fuckin idiots. Sell your guitars guys!

  • You can grab the audio-mp3 of this clip at grabtubesnow doht cohm.

  • This vid is great for beginners, I don't know why everybody complain about it. He somewhat managed to do a 7:42 minutes video with a concept that takes 15 seconds to explain, but I mean what else are you expecting from a video teaching powerchords?

  • this doesnt help for shit...

  • Shitty tone, kid. You don't always need the octave. Obviously if you have trouble you don't need to drop tune it when you could just diagonally bring the third up such as: x-3-5 into 3-3

  • why does an electrical guitar need to have metal strings?

  • @301807137 so the pickups can pick up their magnetic field and change it to notes

  • thanks, this was really helpful! =)

  • he would be amazing if he was good at guitar....... but he's not

  • nice bro, just get some contacts and grow your hair out and youll be rockin

  • Good teacher, good guitar player, this realy helped!!!

  • why not just play all three strings with just two fingers?

  • @0Sskate you can do that if youre tryin to keep the rythm but you can do more with 3 fingers

  • @thelatestdunbar true

  • good teacher

  • way to overcomplicate it.

  • looks like a nerd trying to look cool

  • @dreinicko47 Looks like a troll trying to be cool.

  • u suck. end of story good bye, any questions?

  • isnt a power cord when u play two strings at the same time like string six fret two and string five fret five?? <--- example

  • u look weird and it doesny help

  • this dosent make scense

  • give me that PRS!!

  • sorry but..I mean just read the tab and play the chord!

what are you talking about the whole time?

  • really if u dont understand this u should put the guitar down and go do something else, its super easy

  • you got unnesserly (sp?) complicated. all you have to say is play the root and then a 5th above it.

  • ill stick with my air guitar..

  • clear!

  • lenny breau is the greatest gutar player that ever lived. He played a seven string guitar.

  • A lot of guitarist nowadays are playing 7 strings...

  • I struggle to do power cords when standing up, my fingers can't stretch as far as when sitting, do I have my guitar too low or what?

  • @medievillord yeah u do have ur guitar way too low just adjust that stripe

  • thatr song sucks

  • What song does he play? i wanna learn it :P

  • @Jiswido smoke on the water-deep purple

  • thanks! I needed to check on a power chord name and you were a great help!

  • bollocks i learned this stuff all by myself..it's just logic..

  • Well a powerchord is a root and the 5th. And smoke on the water uses the root one octive up and it's 5th. So it's very similar.

But yea, he shoulda used a better song. Smoke on the water is overplayed anyway. It's to a point that I hate the riff now hahas.

  • jeez guitar and all the chords and everything is so confusing lol

  • thts wat she said

  • they might be a bit confusing at first, but once you get it down your in rock heaven!!!

  • Why can't I just know how to play, lol. Darn harder than it looks. Thks.

  • ARG! I'm growing gray hair on my head! Dx

  • powerchords are very simple to play,

and thats what my playing is basicly about. I also down tune the guitar to D '

and off course, play solos, and use

time signatures, and alternative tunings, in songs lol!

  • @MrBegeebuz

    you must progress eventually

  • u rock

  • your a beast at guitar, great explanation, thanks

  • chords are so confusing

  • @osucollegebuckeye i agree

  • Intervals, power chords and drop-d tuning... all explained amazingly after about 5 minutes. Very nice, thanks so much! =)

  • he plays alsome and teach very good. :)

  • whats D?

  • This is the best description of power chords on YouTube so far

  • Its a chord

  • a note=)

  • That is one FAT guitar!! Is that a PRS?

  • semi accoustic I believe. Can be both electric and accoustic.

  • yeah its a prs, you can tell by the bird inlays. Jack & Danny has PRS copies which have them too.

  • this doesnt help at all

  • I agree :(

  • Great guitar's lesson, and the tunning on D make the guitar sounds more heavy. Great to use with the power chords. Simple class, but 100% efficient on it's purporse. Thank you, again.

  • NOOB

  • power chords are the first 4 frets and if you want power chords with distoriion search mudvayne dig all the guitar player is doing is playing power chords.

  • you dont even know what a Powerchord is.

it means you need to play with you whole finger!

you only do overdrive because it sounds real!

    ASS

  • Dude , can I use electric tab for acoustic ?

  • yeah, you can learn powerchords but it just doesn't sound so right

  • @germs95 yes it goes but it can be more difficult because electric guitar neck is shorter and smaller on the width and the strings is softer but it goes it's the same chords

  • theres an easier way to play smoke on the water :P

  • get distortion

  • u suck ass

  • Thanks man!!!

  • u didnt help at all u cock block!

  • th man :))) go profi rif .....

  • Really cool :)

  • Damm wierd 7's.

Actually good video for beginners but smoke on the water isnt played like that by Ritchie Blackmore although who cares.

  • It's Smoke on the Water to help with power chords...

  • Yea cool, ive learned to do it about 3 different ways.

Green Day is good for demonstrating power chords also.

  • thaaaaaaaaaaaanks

  • L2P SMOKE ON THE WATER NUB

  • Thanks for posting, good job.

  • thnx u helped!!!!

  • wah?????

  • this doesnt help at all

  • @diddo05 Agreed. Didn't know what the fuck he was saying aswell.

  • Hey man wor chord r u doin at 1:29

  • G dude

  • just play a dropD

  • bit rude. No need for the attitude

  • Very rude indeed. Good day to tou sir.

  • so with power chords, do you strum all the strings, or do you only strum the strings you're fretting?

  • That doesn't really matter.

You mute the strings that aren't part of the powerchord, I always strum all strings, lots easier.

  • REALLY useful thanks man!

  • when you turn of the volume and the unplug the guitar will it sound like a normal guitar

  • wtf, no, it will be quiet and it will have no drag..

  • Best comment ever.

  • hey guys!! my friend got a big problem and need help! we both have electric guitars STAGG and i lended my tremolo bar to my friend. the problem is he cannot unscrew it and its stuck pls help!!!

  • well... go to a guitar shop. they might help you. or buy another whammy.

  • yeah, thar was really confusing haha

    SLOW YOURSELF!

  • a 3 note power chord is like a drownin man flippin off the lifegaurd...just doesnt make sense.

  • Yes it does...

  • i wish i could give you two thumbs down

  • ...well that wasn't confusing at all

  • i want guitar!!!

  • Very good

    Thanks

    Dez Sanderson

  • put some distortion on!

  • QUESTION. i generally understand power chords but, like myself there are some who want to strum every string (or most of them) rather than just the ones which are needed to create the sound; so you can play fast with energy. So using the the (second) ring finger becomes quite useful for muting strings. If I was to play the chord a string lower (A string) i.e. A-1,D-3,G-3; would you advise me to use the finger to mute the 1st E string as well as the other 2 or miss the string and strum the other 5

  • corn. the second finger on your left or fretting hand is the middle finger, your ring finger is #3...

try to use the distal joint or tip of first finger for the root of the chord but lightly touch ALL the strings with the remaining joints of this finger. When looking at your neck it almost looks like your doing a barre chord. Then your right hand can strum more wildly without worrying about unwanted open strings ringing out.

i've got some vids on this that should help too.

    Rock it!

  • cheers man, thats what ive been doing anyway its just i get confused when i see other people doing them differently. its confusing learning at times when every1 teaches with a different style

  • Exactly, that's what my whole site is about Guitar Insight. With so much information out there you have to decipher the good from the bad. There is a right way to do things. You know it's right when you're getting the result (sound) you want.

  • yeah but thats assuming i know anything about a guitar.. evry video i look at assumes someone has played before!!! ugh

  • i hate it when they do that.. and how is that A?

  • how is that not A...

  • I already knew power chords but I didnt really understand the 5th thing so thanks. On a side note have you heard of the ancient solfeggio scale? It occurs naturally in nature, its amazing and worth looking into. You can somewhat accomplish the same ancient tones with a slight adjustment to tuning. Biologists use at least one of the frequencies to repair DNA! Anyways good video, have a good one.

  • ey guys help me with playing power chords i play them with these fingers 1st 2nd and 3rd i dont use : 1st,3rd and 4th i cant use my pinkie its realy hard for me and it sounds better when i use these fingers 1,2,3 can u help me what should i do? keep playing with these fingers or use 1st,3rd and 4th?

  • another good way to play power chords is using your first finger and using your third finger to bar the rest, you can do power chords alot faster that way, as you don't have to use your pinky.

  • I agree. that's how I do power chords, it's much easier.

  • Most of my chords are barr chords ever since I learned how to play guitar. The A and G power chords from your video look like the shapes of Am and Gm respectively. But how do I use/apply power chords on dim chords, A9, G7b5, Dm6, etc.? Please enlighten me. Thanks.

  • You don't. Power chords are made up of the bass and fifth note of a chord. It's best to stay away from them entirely, but if you do find the need you can play them you can play, using A9 as an example, a flat fifth rather than a natural fifth.

Things like the minor 6th chord have the fifth in them, so they won't cause any problems.

In the end though, power chords strip a song of all emotion, so it's usually best to stay away whenever possible.

  • I made a mistake. I thought you said Adim9, and accidentally wrote A9. A 9th chord does have a fifth.

Obviously though, something like 7b5 has a flat fifth, in which you would merely flatten the fifth in the power chord.

  • awesome power chords are great especially with the distortion turned on...

  • you're awsome mate.

  • thanks man i can do this properly

  • super dziabka fiu fiu

  • Thanks a lot mate, I knew the chords, but I'm worried that I'm gonna blow when someone asks me to play an Am7 or Dm7 chord in the fifth fret. Thanks, you really inspired me.

  • and i just a beginir

  • thank you very musch. i will buy a electric guitar what should i buy Squier Fat Stratocaster,Epiphone G-310 SG,Epiphone Les Paul Special II

and if you won't to give me an example what guitar i will buy i wanted for power chords you know arch enemy, rammstein i won't guitar to play on guitar like them ,(death metal)

  • Dude,plz practise spelling.

  • Oh the irony...

  • how long have u been playing? it loks so much easier for u

  • your good but my guitar sounds bad

  • tune it bro, buy a tuner to do it

  • You're geting lot of fretbuzz

  • newbee lessen

  • thanx for taking time to share this.

  • Youre really good man i wish i was that good and thank you for taking your time to teach us for free

  • your really a really good guitarist man

  • Why are the posts all bashing the guy. Be thankful that he is willing to teach for free instead!!!

  • i like your tone

  • ur strings are to bright...get thicker strings

  • Haha, its just the tone I have note the srtring. That guitar has 13's on it I think.

  • this guitar seems to have very thick strings... not too bright. 10 is enough. This is atleast 12

  • Is it really that big of a deal? That is the way the guitar is setup for larger strings, its a hollow body with piezo's so it has a great acoustic sound to it as well.

  • who is he Stevie Ray Vaughan

  • this is a bad lesson from the start

you dont know what you are doing much

you can teach but not like soo good
